I don't mind Mario 64. I've also enjoyed Wave Race 64, StarFox 64 and Ocarina of Time. That being said, it remains the least-played console in my game room.

N64 fans tend to be hyperbolic in their praise. I've enjoyed a decent number of N64 games, but I just don't love them enough. You're required to think Ocarina of Time is a flawless masterpiece, otherwise you're shitting on it.
Mario Sunshine
I just want to say I'm happy that SMB3 didn't get a single vote. That game is very highly rated, but it also deserves all of it.
I would also say SMB2 (not on the list) is underrated, lots of stupid comments on how it's "not mario", which is technically true, but the game is excellent.
I don't recall any glitches when I last played it (X-Mas of it's release). It's real flaw is like many other Nintendo games, just a one mind trick pony. Once you've played it once and been wowed, it's spell runs out of mp and you wake up and find out you've sleep some some slob named Mario instead of Princess Peach and Zelda duo.
I played it way more recently. It is definitely full of glitches. As for it being a one trick pony, though, I disagree. I loved it despite its downfalls. And the main reason for it was its dynamicity. 'Definitely not a one trick pony.
I consider "New" Super Mario Brothers in all its iterations to be overrated, because people speak of it like it is a feast after famine, when it is closer to the all-you-can-eat buffet food, compared to the proper meals that had come before it. Take a screenshot from any other Mario game, and you can identify it easily. Each of the games in this "new" subseries are nearly indistinguishable from each other.
On that note, I don't see how Mario World is in the lead here. It takes the formula from Mario 1 & 3, adds a heavy dosage of exploration, and streamlines the power-up system. Yes, Mario 3 had more power-ups, but let's get real foks: the only power-ups that really mattered were the fire flower and the raccoon tail. The tanooki suit was a purely aesthetic upgrade over the standard "leaf" power-up (I'll call you a liar if you try to tell me that the statue ability was all that useful). The frog suit was beneficial in what, maybe 15% of the levels? The hammer bros suit was awesome, but it was only available once or twice through the game.
And someone back there complained about the music in Super Mario World all being the same... well, that's pretty much every Mario game up to that point. Mario 1 had 3 main music tracks. Mario 2 had 2. Mario 3 had... 5 or 6 (Overworld, Athletic, Underworld, Fortress, Airship... am I missing any?). Mario World's soundtrack may not be amazing, but it's not like any of the other games had more variety.
I can't change my official vote, but I think Super Mario Land 2 is the most overrated game in the Mario series rather than my original choice of Mario 64.
The results here are interesting, but of the 29 people who voted here, how many of them like Mario games period?
I think an "overrated Zelda game" thread would be more interesting, as there's PLENTY of those out there. Plus it has the added benefit of not being in direct competition with the mascot of a certain now-defunct 90's console manufacturer.
That was my thought when creating this. Mario 2 USA is underrated by a mile. One of the NES' best games.
Oh yeah, Mario 3 deserves all the praise. Best NES game. My top 3
1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Tiny Toon Adventures
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game (My top Turtles game on consoles)
When people go from 8 to 16-bit, they expect something more out of Mario. Nintendo had two years to do all sorts of things with World between 88 and 90 in Japan. Honestly, the game is kind of boring. It does okay for a launch game, but I wouldn't list it as one of the greatest games ever. As I said in a different topic, the graphics are meh, even though it is a launch game. The soundtrack is forgettable. The only positives I can give are battery backup and Yoshi. Other than that, 6 out of 10. Severely overrated. People here expected more out of it and were disappointed.
How can Super Mario Land 2 be overrated when people barely talk about it? Unlike all the other classic Marios it didn't get a single port. It's the only b&w gameboy game I still play, and will likely keep playing.
Super Mario Bros. 2 is my favorite NES Mario by far. I'm always surprised by how little love it gets considering how important it is in the Mario universe for establishing the main cast (Luigi's taller and thinner, Peach can glide, etc.). Super Mario Run still carrying on with these NOA created archetypes says a lot about how influential a game it was for the franchise. While I know the backstory and can understand how people dismiss it for not being a "true" Mario game, I also have to wonder how in the world do these people accept Mario 64 as a "true" title given how little it resembles the other SMB titles itself.
Because it's the only console release which followed the Konami arcade original (until the 360 port, at least)?
I don't know where you're going with 64, but people want a true 64 sequel.
As far as Turtles go, no. Because it didn't feel as cheap compared to the other games in the series. Manhattan Project cheapened out by putting barely any health pickups in (first one is in the third level after defeating Slash. Turtles in Time I like, but is a very overrated game on 16-bit consoles. Let's save that for an overrated Turtles games topic if it comes down to that.
Because it came up in this thread, really. If I wanted to be petty and waste my time, I'd risk poking my head into the NintendoAge forums, where a "Best Mario Game???" poll thread pops up pretty regularly (I'm sure).
Real talk: even though I wouldn't list it as my favorite series, I've played and completed every core Mario game that Nintendo has come out with (I'm excluding the Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi series, even though I've played a fair number of those, too). Although only a few of them "wowed" me, only two of them disappointed me; Mario Land 2 and NSMB2
I mean no disrespect. In fact I rarely disagree with you. But Super Mario Land 2 has every flaw that Mario World is being accused of, only moreso.
Correction: There's one "Mario" game I've never played, and that's Yoshi's Island.
