It was either Mario World or the original Mario. I like both games, but I have a few problems with Super Mario World. The music is the same damn thing in every level, or rather a variation of which. Minus the Ghost Houses if I remember correctly. There is a lack of the pre-level item use which was an amazing innovation of Mario 3. There are slightly less enemies (64 in Mario 3 and 62 enemies in World some are repeats), there are technically less powerups including. World did introduce Yoshi, but oddly enough for me at least, I hated Yoshi as a character. I liked the movie version of Yoshi more. With that said, World is an enjoyable game, but for me it was a downgrade from Super Mario Bros 3.
SMW was pretty disappointing to me after 3, I expected a lot more than what I got. Like Barone said in another thread it's an 8bit game with passable 16bit graphics.
Yoshi's Island is neat but I freaking hate baby Mario and want him dead. I also find it overrated, the game isn't all that amazing, certainly nothing close to S3&K.
Super Mario 64 was revolutionary at the time, but I can't play it these days. I'd rather play Croc.
The "2D with 3D graphics" Mario games like New Super Mario Bros are all terrible.
They're all overrated, but the NES/Famicom platformers, SMW and SML2 are good. I never like SMW2 and don't think it's even much of a platformer.
Mario 64 is fun, particularly the DS version, but completely pales in comparison to the good 2D games.
Sunshine is a mess that feels like tedious work instead fun.
I played the first Galaxy game and they finally figured out how to do good art/style for a 3D Mario game (just rip off Sonic Jam), but the gameplay pales in comparison that much more compared to Mario 64.
I can't be bothered to try any more newer games and even if New SMB is a good game aside from the stale visuals, they're enough to deter me from finding out. I'd rather just play the numerous old games that I enjoy.
Never felt as ripped off as when I got Super Mario Sunshine. Back then, I was hoping for Super Mario 128.
Super Mario Land 2 is THE Mario game, best one easily. Shame it's a b&w gameboy game... it really should have gotten a GBA remake or sequel.
They're all overrated to a certain degree, so I'm sticking with the ones that are "seriously" overrated.
Yoshi's Island has very nice visuals and some good set pieces, but it's too long, somewhat lacking variety, and too easy. The only challenge is in trying to get 100% by collecting every flower piece etc. I can never be arsed to bother with that sort of challenge. I felt like they took that straight out of Donkey Kong Country. It was like they saw how well DKC sold and figured every game had to have that. It's still fun and interesting enough to play through, but it's not fantastic.
Super Mario 64 has a shit camera, very lame environments, and the whole system of progression (gaining stars to unlock further levels) is very tedious. It was very impressive at the time in some ways, and I feel that made people turn a blind eye to its faults as a game. I tried to give it a legit second chance when it came as a pack-in with my DS, figuring maybe I had been too harsh, and I still couldn't tolerate it for long. To this day, 99% of the time I see it getting praise, it starts off with either "when I was a kid" or a dissection of the circumstances of its release in 1996. That can be a topic worthy of discussion, but if that's all you got, it's not very high praise IMO.
New Super Mario Bros. DS was one of the most disappointing games I've ever played. I thought we were overdue for a "proper" 2d Mario. I always thought it was weak that they didn't make an original game in the series for the GBA, instead throwing out port after port after port. At the same time, I thought Nintendo did a good job with semi-related GBA games like Wario Land 4 and Mario vs. Donkey Kong. I was ready for this game to kick all kinds of ass. Instead what I got was a generic implementation of a committee's idea of what a new Mario game would be like. They checked off certain boxes and phoned it in. My first time playing NSMB, the game just about put me to sleep, but then I finished the game in my sleep and beat it with 40+ extra lives.
Mario 64.
The only Mario platformers I really enjoy anymore are 1983 Arcade Mario Bros and Mario vs DK. The rest put me to sleep especially the OG SMB.
I almost feel tempted to say Mario 64 is the most overrated of the bunch, but it was trying something different than Mario World. It's a 7 out of 10 game for me. That being said, I'm not blind to some of the flaws it had. Personally, I'm not huge on the controls, which I felt Banjo-Kazooie did better at. Some of the camera angles weren't that great. The second half of the game felt underdeveloped. I like it, but it's not going to make me stop playing Crash Bandicoot or Gex.
Tried NSMB Wii once. It didn't come off as impressive to me compared to Galaxy. I'll be curious to see how others feel about the NSMB games and the 3D "insert word" games.
I'm one of those people that thinks most Mario platformers (and Nintendo in general) have no replay value. You beat them once, you're done. Not much to go back to compared to other games from other companies. I'll have to see how this poll continues to do.
Super Mario World is fun, sure, but it's definitely not aged well compared to other games in the series. Yoshi's Island blows it out of the water in pretty much every way. Also the 'default' sound patch set used in 40% of SNES games, SMW included, is muffled, flat, over-echoed, sub-telephone quality garbage, and people give the GEMS driver grief?
@j_factor: Oh come on, Next Generation said Super Mario 64 was the best game EVAR!!1 back when it was released! And we all know that videogame magazines are always right.
Super Mario World. Honestly, for what it sets out to do, Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of the best platform games ever created and after the template and quality standard that it set, SMW took definitely a step back in it's game design. Other members have pointed out other flaws in this game, so there's no need for me to go there again. It's definitely a good, rock solid game but not worth the praise "BEST GAME EVER" praise that it gets.
I felt temped to vote for Mario 64, but that game was the first leap of the series in 3D and aside from the problems already well specified by j_factor, I think that it did a good job all things considered.
I think people are confused by the poll title. It should read "Which Mario game is least replayable to you." Because I can't imagine why anyone would choose to replay Mario 64 over SMW.
I voted for Mario 64 and Super Mario World. Super Mario World just feels uglier and too muddled in browns and purples. Yoshi was a poor addition, and flying with the cape doesn't see much use (though it is fun). I hate the spin jump. I do like the Ghost Houses, but the game itself is pretty mediocre for me. I'll note that a friend's mom had me keep and "test" his SNES Christmas present when it first came out, and I didn't think much of it then, and I still wouldn't put it in my top five Mario games.
Mario 64 embodies everything I loathe about 3-D platformers and games. More space and walking around environments than gameplay. Everything Mario was about was tossed aside because it just doesn't work in 3-D. No more precision gameplay. No more challenge. Everything is dragged out. Focus is now entirely on collecting junk. We're given a controllable camera which is garbage but went on to influence 3-D games for decades to come. I was so happy to see that Super Mario Galaxy finally ditched the user controlled camera, because it should never have been a thing to begin with. It is a stopgap solution which allowed developers to avoid addressing design problems for too long.
The New Super Mario Bros. series is fantastic. It's not going to impress anyone because it's not trying to reinvent the wheel. It's a solid old school Mario platform game, and I much prefer how it plays over the NES originals. I really enjoyed the first two, and it's a big reason I want to pick up a Wii U (just not at its current price). I do wish they were a bit more challenging, and the gimmicks (Super Mushroom/Wiimote waggle) are a bit lame, but neither issue spoils my enjoyment.
I've honestly never even played Mario 64, and this is exactly why I voted for it. They had the Mario 64 castle as a map on a particular server for a HL2 mod that I used to frequently play (PVK2), and it was absolutely terrible, especially since it was predominantly a melee game. You had to run around for miles just to swing your sword at anybody. Yet people would actually vote to rotate to that map, because of their stupid nostalgia.
the first 2 mario games are good. plain but good. SMW was ok, i enjoyed it but felt limited by the downgrade of the amount of power ups (fire flower, yoshi and a cape?). mario 64 was amazing at the time but now it's just a long ass star hunt that is not fun at all. everything made beyond that just felt forced and lame. sunshine was dumb, i don't wanna clean up your island. galaxy felt odd and the setup was plain jane trying to be fun.
I can't put my finger on why, but even as a little kid SMW just rubbed me the wrong way. Growing up, we had SMW and Mario All Stars and 99.9% of the time I got my Mario fix from the latter. I found the art style and music in SMW kind of creepy as a kid. We also had Yoshi's Island and aside from when we first got it, I pretty much ignored it in favor of All Stars as well.
There was way too much scouring of levels to find keys to unlock switches to reach doors to find more keys to unlock secret levels to do the exact same thing. Mario 3 felt a lot more streamlined and not at all like a chore.
gonna try again on the classic, but i never got into yoshi's island, despite all the love it gets
sunshine was a big disappointment following 64 but i feel like that's more acknowledged these days
I dont like Mario Bros games in general. SMB i think that is ridiculous game, poor graphically and a bit repetitive. I voted in SMW 2 Yoshi island because it arrived in a bad moment with PS and SS showing more power.
SMB 3 have my respect.
I was in an expo event in my city around 2008. The organizer presented certain actual consoles ( my knowledge was outdated about it) with nostalgic consoles. PS3 had a car game with excellent visual. I saw genesis and sonic 2. The organizers presented some mario games which i ignored totally. However a game took my attention and while i´ve been looking it keep me looking and looking again, although i consider myself critic, i dont saw a flaw. The name: Mario Galaxy
This is true. I dislike Mario 64 and find it boring. I hate Mario 64 for how it inspired everything which came afterward.
Super Mario Galaxy really surprised me. I figured it was just the latest Mario circlejerk when all the perfect reviews came out. I can't say it's perfect, but it's really well done. I love the fixed camera, and while it still can't offer the challenge of a 2-D platformer, the gameplay is interesting and fun.
I'm wouldn't consider myself the hugest Mario fan, but I don't really think any of the games in the series are "overrated."
I'd say they're just "rated" ... each one more or less deserves all the praise/criticism it gets.
But to play along with the thread, I'll say Mario 64, if for no other reason than that the entire Nintendo 64 library is overrated.
I couldn't agree more.
However, I think that we have consider the time and context of it's release as a major factor. Therefore, the way I see it is that Miyamoto & co. went with the safest and also the easiest way to impress people while making the game accessible and enjoyable, in which they undoubtedly succeeded.
For a second Mario game, they went the Paper Mario route, which I think it gives a good indication of that scenario.
And yes, Dudley can't poke, but if he gets you cornered you're pretty much fucked :)
Super Mario World being overrated is baffling to me, where many people find SMB3 to be pinnacle in the Mario-platforming formula, SMW was a pleasure in my experience...
Is Super Mario World 2 really a Mario game or the beginning of 'Yoshi' games?
Anyways, it boils down to two games for me.
If I didn't own the N64 at the time, my vote would be for Super Mario 64. But I did own it. And I loved Mario 64. Some years ago I was thinking of selling my 64, but couldn't because of this game. And thank goodness. The 64 can be a lot of fun, it's just overwhelmingly niche...
So I get it can be aimless, objectives and bosses non-intuitive, etc. etc. I still find it charming. I loved exploring the castle, finding secrets, and despite my absolute disdain for collect-a-thons (I'M LOOKING AT YOU RARE, YOU SCUM), grabbing those 100 coins never bothered me because of how much range Mario had in his movements and actions.
But I get it. For what it's worth though, Dire Dire Docks is still great tune to doze off to!
So in the end, I would vote for Super Mario Sunshine. But that game isn't overrated, it is just absolutely dreadful. Does that still count?
Hey, Lync, didn't it bother you that grabbing all red rings in Mario 64 for some stages was practically impossible? (ie, like there always being some that fall in the lava) Killed my ambition to keep playing back in the day.
Really? I viewed it more as the games that got the greatest amount of praise that didn't deserve it to the degree it gets. As far as 64 compared to SMW, it has less to do with which one isn't as enjoyable as the other, but rather how much the general public praises them. They praise SMW as being the Phantasy Star IV of the Mario line, greatest game ever. Well it isn't.
Except you're forgetting the general public view all Mario games are the greatest thing since the NES single handedly created video games.
I hesitate to call SMW overrated, it's a great game, but it was a bit disappointing after SMB3. Every Mario game was such a big deal back then and SMW the first time I just sorta felt "meh" . Definitely evolutionary but what an evolution.
New Super Mario Bros. has less varied boss fights since... the first one? It's just Bowser and his Baby, if I remember correctly, plus the boss battles are basically the same and nothing special. Hell, even Super Princess Peach has cooler bosses. Not a big fan of the 'baa' voice added on some of the tracks, either.
I can't get into Galaxy.
...I will keep trying.
Come to think of it, I really don't like Bowser Jr. Such an unnecessary character.
i'd argue it was a step back. SM3 had the flower, leaf, frog suit, tanooki suit, hammer suit, P Wing suit, star icon, mushroom, boot, etc. SMW had the flower, mushroom, cape and yoshi. Yeah it was cool to fly with the cape, but nothing you didn't do with the leaf, and it spaced out the times you could fly and you couldn't, same as sonic in deciding when you could zoom through a part of a level and you couldn't, AFAIK you couldn't fly through every level of SMW or 3.
SMW also introduced Nintendo's biggest pre-Pikachu tribble, Yoshi. Yoshi isn't quite as insidious in this respect as Pikachu, sure, but damn is that thing over-loved by every Nintendo fan I meet.
To me it's just one of those characters designed to help sell a game with an otherwise stale cast, not unlike a Cousin Oliver for an ailing sitcom. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CousinOliver
this is also me: it's fun, but small partitioned levels with mostly the same theme just haven't clicked for me like so many others have. ive played the first third or so of both parts and just didn't keep at it, but do wanna try again (especially with 2)Quote:
I can't get into Galaxy.
...I will keep trying.
All of the above.
I've played most Mario games from all generations, and even own a bunch of Mario games, but not one of them has ever clicked with me. The gameplay feels too slippery, the level designs are boring, and I've never understood Mario's appeal as a character. I acknowledge and appreciate the Mario games' importance throughout history in pushing videogames through new frontiers, but the games themselves are just "meh" to me.
I wish I could point to a particular level or set of levels for you to try, but part of the appeal is that each world feels unique. I even dove straight into the water worlds, something I'd expect to hate in a 3-D game or any for the matter, and enjoyed it. It's nothing I see me replaying despite the built-in leaderboard, but I can enjoy the challenges for what they are.
If you don't like it, then you don't, and there's nothing wrong with that. For me, Galaxy fixes everything which bugged me about Mario 64. There's some actual challenge, levels are genuinely interesting and not empty set pieces, and the fixed camera lets me focus on the action. Even the motion controls are used well enough (I'd rather the game not use them at all, but they don't interfere with the game as they're implemented).
