What to look for when buying an Xbox 360?

The oXbox BC on the 360 was a good idea, but it was never really implemented that great, and a lot of really good games never made the cut.

I can't speak to how the XB1 will handly oXbox emulation but I'd be pretty confidant that a lot of titles won't make the cut there either no matter how well it is (or isn't) done.

If you can find an Xbox, especially one modded with a mod chip (or if you can find and install a mod chip yourself), it's well worth picking one up.

I tossed a nice big HDD in mine and ripped all my games to it's drive. There's some really good games on the system, and it can output native 720p so it tends to work with a competent upscaler pretty well.

A bit off topic from the 360, but if you have an interest in the system, it's pretty damned cheap to pick up. It also makes a pretty rock solid emulator platform as well if you care and don't already have something else already doing that.

I sold my original Xbox in my recent trade-in, but the only games I want to rebuy for the system are supported on Xbox 360 BC, that is, both Blinx games, Sneakers, and Thousand Land (which is one import that is enabled region-free in Xbox 360's BC).

I waited until the 360 Elite came out. I've never had a problem with it, and I played a lot of game on it.

I was interested in the Japanese Xbox scene when the system first debuted because I knew it would be very niche, and I was right. Most people don't know much about these obscure imports. Also, I documented a lot of the unreleased games that have been confirmed (Mostly) to exist. Some interesting tidbits, like the fact that when True Fantasy Live Online was cancelled, Level 5 re-used some of its assets for the development of Dragon Quest 8. If you see pictures of the caravan in DQ8 and compare them with screenshots of it in TFLO, you'll see what I mean. Also, similar shaded character designs.

Question: Is what Wikipedia says regarding issues in 360's compatibility with original Xbox games actually true? Some say it only applies to pre-slim model systems, but I don't know, because they did update every official system and harddrive since then to work with every game on the final list. I have seen the incompatibility list of PS1 games on PS2, and having personally played a few of them, some of them are inaccurate, or only applicable to certain models which are not listed specifically. I am going to buy a few original titles to play on my 360 and want to know if most of the games are fairly playable regardless of some slowdown here and there.

All the one's I've played have been... just OK. I stopped playing them there simply because playing them in 720p with an upscaler on my oXbox was a much better experience. The 360 doesn't improve the games in any way, unlike, say, the 360 emulation on the XB1, which actually improves a lot of the games there in some way.

TLDR:
Serviceable, but not ideal.

I don't have an original Xbox at the moment. Would it still be convenient to play them on my Xbox 360?

Not all, just those selected. So more and more day by the day or something get backward compatible. It's emulation too and emulation isn't always perfect, but sometimes I heard of better frame rates. A negative emulation flaw in Dark Souls 1 is that the game looks darker, go check digital foundry video comparison to see this.

The emu got on leaps and bounds. That DF is old the current 360 emu is now 99% of the time better than playing the same game on a 360.

and that emu is free of charge and let's you play from the 360 discs? so no downloads?

The emu is free, if you own the 360 games you can use them (but you need to download the emu for each game) If you bought a 360 game digital and its becomes part of the BC programme, its added to your XBox One downloads. Its a fab system
