PSP games you've enjoyed (no compilations, denied)

Love my PSP and it's all charged up for some more action, but mostly use it for emulation and compilations like the fabulous Gradius/Salamander Collections. Would be nice to see some truly enjoyed games. To start things off, I'll list my most enjoyed PSP games;

Ys I & II Chronicles (bumb into enemies action JRPG)

If you ever wanted to get into and see if this series is for you, this is it. This was my introduction to Ys and still my favorite in this series. The only one I didn't like on PSP is the 7th one and unfortunately, that seems to be the direction for the future of this series.

I was very surprised by this RPG, felt like a classic PS1 era RPG and had me hooked from beginning to cliffhanger end. Which reminds me, the sequel has been officially translated for awhile now.

I’ve got some.

Pursuit Force: It’s basically “GTA Chase Sequences: The Game,” and it’s awesome. Fantastic soundtrack from Richard Jacques, also.

LocoRoco 1 & 2: Not even ISIS is impervious to this game’s saccharine charm.

Patapon: It’s a rhythm game and a real-time strategy game.

God of War - Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta: Excellent adaptations of the console series, with graphics & story that can easily stand alongside the original trilogy (but not Ascension, which had amazing graphics and a shit story).

Mega Man - Powered Up: Fantastic re-imagining of the original NES game with adorable character models and music, two (iffy) new robot masters, and a slew of extra challenges to beef up the experience. I imagine Capcom didn’t continue this series because it would be too daunting to put in this amount of effort another five times. Also, Capcom hates Mega Man.

Lumimes was my jam for a while.

Speaking of compilations, I’ve been looking for the Gradius one for a while.

Oh, it's ace. Still only way I can play Gradius IV too. Gradius Gaiden has a bit of extra slowdown (very noticeable at crystal stage boss). Salamander and Parodius PSP Collections still happen to be my only imports, ever. Twinbee Collection managed to find locally by chance, wasn't planning on ever getting, but since it was there... so yeah, have all 4 Collections.

The Gradius Collection is excellent, as is the Metal Slug Anthology.

Star Trek Tactical Assault is pretty cool, but I'm stuck on a level where I have 2 ships going against my single ship. I've survived that, but you still end up in another battle on your way back to the Star Base and the damage taken from the previous battle is too much to get past the last ship.

I've recently picked up Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins, but I've yet to try it out. It's a somewhat rare title for the handheld, and that's why I had to pay $25 for it.

At Gamevet: wasn’t there an R-Type tactics on PSP as well? I also kinda liked the Lord of the Rings tactics game, too.

I believe that G&G game would be uncommon now, but I remember that they were practically giving them away back in the day. Same with the two Powerstone PSP games, you never see either of those anymore.

Yeah, it's called R-Type Command. It's been awhile since I've played it. I got my copy from a 2nd and Charles in Beaumont Texas a little over a year ago for $7.

I got my ($5) copy of Power Stone Collection (both games are on the disc) from a Fry's used game section several years ago. Honestly, those used games look like they were brand new.

I got a ton of PSP games when everyone was clearing them out about 4 or 5 years ago. It's one of the systems that I have the most games for, and there are a ton of great titles for what I consider the greatest handheld ever.

Phantasy Star Portable 1, 2, and Infinity were all pretty good Online RPGs. I also really enjoyed the ports of Final Fantasy 1 and 2 and the remake of Star Ocean 1.

That's the Japanese name for the game. It's called R-Type Command in North America.

So Star Ocean 1 remake worked out alright for you, good. Was thinking of it.

Lots of great suggestions. LocoRoco 2 in particular is amazing and good enough for me to have picked up the official soundtrack after getting into it. The only one I can think of which hasn't been mentioned yet is Jeanne d'Arc. I think that's probably my favorite strategy RPG.

PSP is good to get right now as prices are still decent and games are readily available. I sold off my PSP collection three years ago (with a bunch of other stuff I regret) and was recently able to repurchase everything for basically the same amount which was nice, many games even being brand new. I also picked up some other games I always wanted for my PSP Go but could not get on PSN like Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast and Sega Rally.

The main thing I hated about the Parodius Portable collection (I have all 4 of them), some music got altered, and as I do own them all for the Saturn, it was a big letdown to me.

UGnG and Gokumakaimura Kai (the Japan only UGnG revision that went back to the 2 loops formula without the fetch quest necessary to get to the end of the game) are a couple of favorites on the PSP, along with Mega Man Powered Up, Metal Slug XX is another favorite of mine (yeah I even got Leona for it), Castlevania DX Chronicles (with the remade and original Rondo of Blood, and revoiced SotN) is solid, though I prefer original Rondo on it over the remake, and other games like (Namco Museum Battle Collection with Dig Dug II on it FTW, yeah I cheated with this pick, that and Capcom Puzzle World) SF Alpha 3 Max, though playing fighters on an original PSP can be hazardous to ones fingers and health.

Jeanne d'Arc favorite SRPG, serious? Have you ever played Shining Force Trilogy? If so, how does it compare, can't seem to enjoy any SRPG that isn't Shining Force myself.

That's right, the sounds are changed for the worse on Parodius PSP, try the PS1 to PSP Eboot solution (still the Saturn versions are the best). Might as well mention that Salamander PSP was outsourced and the porting didn't go without a hitch, aka, sound emulation on it is pretty bad (Parodius and Gradius Collections were only ones done in house of the 4). So PS1 Eboots still the way to go for Salamander, but worth it for the two other exclusive games (Xexex and enhanced MSX Nemesis II).

Yes, of course, I've played the Shining Force games. Well, all of the Genesis and Saturn games, at least. They're great, but I like Jeanne d'Arc more. The story and characters make it a better game, and I'd say the gameplay and map design is definitely of Shining Force quality.

CRUSH is a fun puzzle game but no longer exclusive to the PSP.

I enjoyed the Ys games that XSEED did (Chronicles, Oath, Seven), not so much Ys 6 since the platforming can be brutal on the PSP.

Started the Legend of Heroes games and I think my PSP hated itself so much it hid (I lost it) for like well over a year until I found it.

Crisis Core is very well done if you already know the FF7 story. And Birth by Sleep is another one that's a good franchise sequel.

i fell in love hard with Prinny: can i really be the hero?, great action platformer with a ton of character in the design. the controls are great and it just has a great "feel" to the hits and collision.

This is a fantastic thread. As I just recently acquired my first PSP.

It's also so difficult. I need to give it another shot, but I rage quit on the final boss and never looked back. Haven't bothered to work on the sequel since I still need to beat that jerk. Great game, otherwise. I always liked the Disgaea artwork, but I never cared about how it (or Phantom Brave) played. Prinny works great for me.

When out, I could only afford one in that gen, so I went the DS route. When GameStop was selling them for pennies on the dollar, I couldn't find one that looked decent enough (granted, mine is a beater upper, but in way better shape than I hoped for 9 games plus system for $30). And for the longest time I held out for that God of War edition and just totally missed out, honestly. Now I'm actually just happy to play it.

Lol. You got me so interested in it in one of our recent talks that I diverted my OfferUp attention towards it.

All I cared for at that point was a woking 2K or 3K model in decent working order. I just wanted to play my darn games already.

What is this OfferUp thing? An app?

A site and an App. A modern day Craigslist alternative. There are several.

Fired up the first Salamander on PSP today, and the ear piercing sounds are real. Worse then I remember. In the process to set up my PSP with an Eboot of PS1 Salamander Deluxe.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin is one of the reasons I got a PSP. I was super disappointed when the original Playstation game didn't get translated. I remember someone joking, "if I start a rumor about Innocent Sin coming to the US, will it come true?" Atlus even quoted it on their website. I guess eventually it did come true.

It's not that kind of game. The strategy of the game is to allocate power to your engines, shields and weapons while controlling the flight of your ship. You'll have to maneuver your ship to keep your strongest shields towards the enemy, while waiting for your weapons to charge up after firing them. Once an area of your shields surrounding the ship has been shut down, that side of the ship will start taking damage, until you can get enough power back to get those shields working again.

Well, the Reliant is pictured on the back of the case. Hopefully I'll be dazzled with fan service until I figure out the mechanics of the game.

One of the best hh ever made, I really enjoyed Tokobot such a charming overlooked classic also loved Hot Shots Golf, Ridge Racer, LocoRoco, Lumines, Syphon Filter, Gitaroo Man Lives

Tokobot is great, whether you play the PSP original or the PS2 update. I loved the remake of the original Ape Escape, which is one of the best PS1 platformers ever. I also want to recommend PopoloCrois. That game was thoroughly enjoyable and full of charm, and the reason I got a PSP to begin with. It's basically an abridged version of the PS1 PopoloCrois games with updated graphics, and the first time the series was brought here. I will also second the Mega Man 1 and X remakes.

The worst thing about the PSP is the volume buttons. Usually play in a dark environment and never know where they are because they blend with the casing and can't just feel the buttons. And when you do find one, it's the wrong volume direction.

I don't play the PSP in the dark. Your eyes will see a strobe light like effect after turning it off.

I always LOVED the PSP! I always considered the handheld a portable Sega Dreamcast because of it's similar features and highly unique games
