I seem to do anything right but when inserting my usb thumbstick (4gb) with all the files in the xbox, the files don't load up. it does recognize the thumbstick, but just nothing on it. Should I try a different thumbstick or is this something else?

How are you inserting a USB thunkstick into your OG Xbox? Do you have a controller converter cable that converts the controller port to USB or do you have a USB port straight up soldered onto a controller port?
Anyway, however you're doing it, you have to first let the Xbox automatically format the USB thumbstick in the memory menu of the official MS Dashboard. Go to the memory menu with your thumbdrive flashed in any format and it'll automatically format it to the format the Xbox recognizes. Once you do that, use Xplorer360 to "inject" files into your USB thumb drive. Your OG Xbox needs to at the very least be softmodded for all of this though.
I have a cable that goes into the controller port and on the other side has an usb stick connector.
ah thank you! now where on earth to find an usb stick less than 2 gig :D
I just searched the boards to make sure I wasn't duplicating and this one came up straight after mine!
It's easier to find SD cards that are 2 GB. I bought an office lot of 10x Kingston 2 GB SD Cards 4 years ago from China for a very decent price (I forgot how much, it was low price yet they were all decent quality... I think they were around $1.80 a piece). You should be able to find them separately nowadays easily for cheap along with an SD card reader. But you also have to remember, only SD card readers that don't read SDHC will be accepted by the Xbox. The Xbox is real picky, so if I were you I would look into trying to connect to your OG Xbox through your home network. I have no experience doing that though so I couldn't help you there, I've always been used to using my 2 GB SD cards with .rar files split in a bunch of 700mb parts along all of my 2 GB SD cards to copy games, emulators and ROMs. I've just been too lazy to learn how to connect to my Xbox through FTP.
Edit: I almost forgot to mention that actually microSD cards and microSD readers are the easiest to find for decent prices and decent quality in the 2 GB range nowadays. Go for Kingston or SanDisk brands. And again, this is also very important, the reader must NOT be able to read SDHC (meaning it can't read higher than 2 GB microSD sticks).
sd cards work on original xbox? I did find a website with a usb 2.0 1gb. perhaps that one will work.
It may just be the particular USB stick you are using, I found a really good guide (video link in the thread I started last night on this subject) and the guy says 4GB or less will work. He is using a 4GB. I tried a no brand freebie USB stick and put the necessary softmod files on it this am and my XBox can read it, and its contents. try another 4GB stick maybe? Although the SD card reader is also a very good idea.
I have often found any modding / game console type operation that requires a USB stick to be quite picky about the sticks it uses. Particularly the Wii, so maybe it's just one of those issues.
bought a new usb stick and it worked! I have now softmodded my xbox. one question though: how can I force my games into 720p? I have enabled all hd resolutions but when inserting a game that is supposed to be 720p it doesn't go higher than 480p.
It depends on the game, if it was coded to output that high it will. Otherwise you are just letting your X Box know that it can allow those games that go that high to do so.
PD Orta and Gun Valkyrie need some files replacing to allow 480p, if you are running PAL versions that is.
soul calibur, dead or alive 2, fifa street 2 are all supposed to run 720p but I don't get any higher than 480p :S
I have somehow managed to force all my games into 720x480p though instead of 640x480 :P
What dashboard do you run?
I had to use my Xbox 360 to format my 2GB MicroSD card (in a USB adapter) so that my original Xbox could read it. I need to remind myself to turn off the controller lock on my account in case I forget it. I only remembered through muscle memory when powering it up after YEARS to perform this one task.
