Video Game Myths (stories from the playground)

I asked about this in the 'state something random' thread, and I couldn't find a similar thread by searching (I suck at searching threads though).

What obvious BS stories about games did you hear BITD? I don't mean stories that were in magazines at the time, like Ermac in Mortal Kombat or the Lara Croft Nude Raider code. I'm talking about stories where you're told that a high score in Tetris earns you a free console if you give a screenshot to your local kmart. Something that's obviously just someone messing with you. Some of the BS I heard is both hilarious and embarrassing when I look back on it.

Here's a few of mine:

My friends and I used to play Street Fighter 2 in a local arcade and one guy told us that there was a button sequence that made the player kick themselves, he then tried to demonstrate the technique with Chun Li, and genuinely seemed surprised when it didn't work. Why would you even want to kick yourself in a game?

I got talking to a guy about Alien 3, I asked him for some advice because I was stuck. He told me that Bishop was an unlockable character and gave me this ridiculous longwinded method that I tried to remember. I have a feeling he was having a laugh at my expense.

Quarterman said that there is a secret unlockable Turbo mode in the PC Engine version of SFII'. No one who has hacked into the game has found it yet. I got the game the day before a week long road trip and tried very hard to beat the game on the gardest difficulty without dying.. but there was nothing different.


Rumors at our local arcades bitd included:

When you beat Trojan and watch the player go to rescue the girl, if you flail around the joystick and and hit jump fast enough, you gain control of the player sprite and can "chop her tits off".

A few people swore that you could knock the female warrior's top off in Gladiator and I have a faint memory of seeing it at one particular machine in town.We got all kinds of exotic games in general, so it may very well have been the Japanese version.



A friend with a SMS insisted that one time he beat the built-in snail maze game and there was a colorful side scrolling boss fight, similar to Alex Kidd the Lost Stars.

In Disney's Aladdin, Sega Genesis, the biggest myth was that you would get a continue in the desert if you looked up under the Mickey Mouse hat. Also along the same lines was that you needed to go this far and do this in order to get the extra life at the left of the level. All BS. The life can be obtained without issue by just approaching a bit forward right where the first moving spike and the snake are. And don't expect any continues either. No. Waiting longer does not help either. And, NO, you're not doing it wrong.

Another Myth was that, back in 1994, the 3DO was hailed as this amazing console that would crush all other upcoming 32bit consoles, including the Saturn and PS1. I gobbled that shit up like the naive 14 year old I was bitd.

A myth that continues to this day in some persistent minds was that the Sega Neptune had reached full working prototype status. Not just a shell for aesthetics. That shit looked cool as hell back then.

There was this rumor about UMK3 where in the stage where Shao Kahn is on his throne (the one that's above Scorpion's Lair) if you entered a cheat your character would go upstairs... and I don't remember what was supposed to happen. And said cheat apparently involved the "middle" button of the D-pad (there's no contact in the middle, though you could in theory press down the whole D-pad and trigger all four directions at once...).

But it exists though. And it's a huge sequence of patch codes. Apparently somebody decided to literally inject a whole new texture with patch codes o_O

What is it with so many games having nude codes? I don't think there's a game with a female character that doesn't have some kind of nude rumors. Were people getting off using pixelated video game girls back then? I've heard quite a few different stories of how to see Lara Croft naked, I think she's made of about 7 polygons in the original games, must be a real turn on to see that.

It may exist, but the rumor I heard at the time was that the code was implemented by pressing the shoulder buttons in time to a Spice Girls song.

What is it with so many games having nude codes? I don't think there's a game with a female character that doesn't have some kind of nude rumors. Were people getting off using pixelated video game girls back then? In this case it's true in the Japanese version, which one unit in my home town might have actually been using. But other people online over the years have talked about the rumor and it may or may not have been based on a random import board in each case, because it's a game where you literally smash the armor off of your opponents.

I guess there's an old story that Shin Megami Tensei for the SFC has some creepy error message that plays every ~60,000 times you boot it up in your SFC. I saw on reddit that someone supposedly captured footage of it for the first time, but it turned out to be a hoax.

There was rumor that Genesis's were going for $50 at the Base Exchange when I was in the 4th grade, 1990. This 10 year old kid was very disappointed when I finally got my Grandma with Base ID to take me.

There also were lots of rumors about SMB1 being on computers of all kinds, Commodore, Atari, clones, etc. Never saw one.

One rumor that did turn out to be true was the Negative worlds on SMB1 though it that's more of an error. No one I knew the trick to do it and wasn't until late the 90's that I saw it. Always thought it was just a rumor.

About that video, I'd say I'm more worried about the guy who died stabbed in the balls o.O;

It got even crazier in Japan (so much that it actually influenced the sequel)

Pokemon rumors that actually became a thing.

-Pikablu
Basically a blue Pikachu that was a water type. Eventually we found out that it was Marill, either it was a leaked image or a fanart that became something like Nintendo Power and their Megaman robot masters contest. Not sure where the "Pikablu" name came from.

-Charmander's 4th Evolution
It was called Charcoal. Basically it was a black Charizard that had blue flames coming from it. This became Mega Evolution Charizard, and I know this wasn't a leaked image because I distinctly remember it being on a magazine cover back in '99 to '00, somewhere during that time.

-The Truck
Pokemon Blue and Red there was supposedly this truck that had Mew inside or near the truck. Well no Mew, but the truck did indeed exist.

-Naked Misty
Well this was the TCG and I didn't believe it existed until some bozo bought Japanese cards and showed me. I was 11 and at this time I was puberty ahoy. Offered money, games, everything I had for that card.

Woah, I remember Base Exchange, my Neighbor used to tell me about some of the ridiculous prices on stuff when he worked on base, he was a civilian so I don't think he was allowed to buy stuff anyway. It actually wouldn't surprise me at all if they really were selling cheap consoles at some of those places.

Every so often I used to hear of some "friend of a friend" that claimed he could copy SNES and Amiga games onto Sega cartridges, so there was always somebody saying they could sell me SMB or Zelda. I wish I had taken them up on the offer just to see how they react, they'd probably just come out with even more BS about how they'd recently broken the necessary hardware or something.

The same trick can be done on the Japanese version, and when you do it, you get 3 quick worlds to play through, then you beat the game, making it possible to beat the game in 5 levels. You get worlds -1, -2, -3, and at the end of level -3 you get an empty Bowser bridge with an axe, hit the axe and save an invisible Toad, press the B button, and you're back to the title screen. Do it again, and after you can pick levels, just like doing the 2 loops the normal way. World -3 looks to be maze castle, with no lava, but water in the pits. However it has lots of bloobers (or bloopers as they are called now), when it looks like their are 3 paths, get to the bottom path, and it's a straight shot to the bridge. After you hit the axe, Mario will auto move as he normally does, killing one of the bloobers as he does, and he'll rescue no one, but the Princess is in another castle message still appears, B button brings you back to the title screen, just like the regular finish method does.

Tested many times, including right before typing this message, via FCEUXD.
