if you love Shrmups/Twin stick boy I hope you own a PS4/Switch!

What I truly love this generation is how much love these genres are getting. Now I don't want to just list everything but will mention good few. I'm not that big into AAA games but both these systems are reminding me of Saturn back in the day. So many niche awesome games of different genres but the two that excite me most they have a lot to choose from. If you like twin stick, PS4 has the Housemarque games like Resogun, Matterfall, and Nex Machina and boy are you missing out if you have not played those yet. (I'm missing out as I have yet to buy Alienation) and Switch has while not as good but still neo un in Neon Chrome, Jydge and others.

PS4 is just loving me as a Shmup fan. Raiden V (I love this series), Darius Burst CS and a ton of ship DLC if you like SEGA, Konami, Cave and many others. Sine Mora EX, Caladrious Blaze, Ghost Blade HD, Astebreed, Sky Force and more. Switch shares some of those like Sie Mora, Sky Force and a couple others like Graceful Explosion Machine and RXN Raijin. Where Switch really shines is old Arcade shoot em ups. Zero Gunner 2, Gunbird, Samurai Aces, Strikers 1945 1 and 2, Blazing Star, Pulstar, Aero Fighters, GunBarich, Alpha Mission games, Zed Blade, Last Resort and others. The switch is also a dumping ground for many old Neo Geo arcade games as is PS4 but also more obscure stuff like Gate of Doom and a Hyrdo Thunder ish game Riptide Renegade which is great but off topic. There is more on the way for both systems new and old. It may not be as much as Genesis, Turbo16 or Saturn in the 90s but there is still plenty. I'd love to share my experiences if people are willing to share theirs with these systems with these genres.

I definitely need to check some of these games out. I only have Resogun, Nex Machina, Sky Force and Raiden V, but would love to try Sine Mora EX and Darius Burst next. The bad reviews for Matterfall put me off buying it even though I liked how it looked, what are your thoughts on it?

I was unaware it had bad reviews. It's a good game. My only issue is, the bosses can be a bit unforgiving. The music is great, controls as responsive. Really fun.

I picked up a PS4 not long ago since the shmup releases sort of reached a critical mass for me. Picked up Battle Garegga, Raiden V, Dariusburst CS, Game Paradise Criusin' Mix, Nex Machina and Wild Guns Reloaded.

Great to have an affordable port of Garegga finally, and handled by port experts M2 to boot. I'd never played the game before, and I'm convinced it lives up to it's reputation. M2 also have Sorcer Striker and Dangon Feveron as part of their Shotriggers range, of course.

DariusBurst is awesome, pretty much all I hoped it would be. Ton of modes, ships, and comprehensive archive content. Love the beam duels with bosses.

As for Nex Machina, just picked this up the other day and have been playing non-stop. It's an extremely well polished and attractive game - a shame Housmarque are done with arcade style stuff going forward.

It has some way to go before it touches the 360 in terms of shmup content, but I think the floodgates are starting to open.

I can pronounce shmup, but I can't do "shrmup". :p

Seriously, though. I agree. It also dawned on me the other day. There does seem to be a resurgence in the genre, and I'm loving it. I think it has to do with the willingness of Sony and Nintendo to allow more indy-style and smaller-budgetted titles. Last gen, it was all about the 360 and the PSP. I hope the trend continues.

P.S.> This gen I guess my favorite has been Ghost Blade HD. Here's to hoping we get an official US physical release. And none of that Play Asia nonsense.

I'm not going to get current consoles until they're dirt cheap, but I do want the Darius 30th Anniversary Edition more than any other newer releases.

My collection keeps getting bigger, I just need to get the console! :P

Dude, how much cheaper does it need to get? Last black friday, the PS4 was $199, and the Xbone $179; both including games.

I can list at least three thousand games in my backlog I've yet to beat, and at least three thousand more I don't yet own I would like to add to my collection physically. My collecting reach can only go so far. More power to you if you can afford to spread that much love. One game did escape me, though: I am Setsuna. Still, for the same price I could have gotten other equally awesome RPGs that got official US releases. And I did. ;)

I'm confused. Ghost Blade HD is $25 PS4 disc. It's not expensive at all. Even the CE which I got last year was $40 physical.

What's confusing about it?

I'm just starting to enter this point but am a long way before justifying the $400 for a Pro (which I'd insist given my 4K TV).

I wish it were still so. I'm looking at $120+ used on eBay. I guess it's not too hard to complain when the game is only $25, but I would have gladly paid an extra $15 to get the goodies on top of it.

this gen alone would've been great for the series if it was just Raiden & getting a copy (physical no less!) of Battle Garegga without having to harvest a kidney
