Alissa Cyan from Comix Zone. She has been my forum avatar for as long as I can remember.
Also, Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. One of my all time favorite games. I've been waiting for the sequel since 2003, and we finally got confirmation at E3 last year, although the game seems to be a prequel from before she was around.

Miranda Lawson
What is it about Miranda you like, Thief? Curious because I remember not being a huge fan of her.
I like everything about Shir Gold except for actually having her be part of my party. Does that count?

There is also inklings in Splatoon. GUM JSR. Bayonetta. 2B. SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE! . Ammy from Okami. Any of the females in ARMS. Tron Bonne. Kat from gravity Rush.
Blaze Fielding, and I do have a soft spot for Lara, but mainly in her Keely Hawes voiced iteration.
Kerrigan, Samus, Asha, (Popful) Mail, Classic Lara, Aloy, Bayonetta, Glados, Tyris Flare, Most female fighting game characters.
Jade & Asha are great picks for me, but

Alis all the way for me - an oppressive government kills her brother, so she picks up a sword & takes on the empire. badass through & through.
Well, she's kind of bitch, but in a good way. Looks hot and has a very attractive accent. Was very surprised when I found out she was modeled after her voice actress Yvonne Strahovski and that she's real. Which makes sense to me since you can't top natural beauty in my opinion.

Only thing that kept me playing this game till the end (as Grandia 2 started getting pretty boring after a certain point). One of the most interesting female characters for sure.
Best girl, no doubt. Red and black would suit her much better, methinks :)
Regarding JRPGs, Estelle from the Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky series is a great character. Anna, the hunter from (Phantasy Star II) and Jean the martial artist/dancer from (Lunar: Eternal Blue) are cool as well.
STGs: Isha, the nun/ace pilot from Giga Wing, Reco (Mushihimesama) and Ellinor (Musha Aleste).
Side-scrolling action: Sheena (Contra Hard Corps), Anne (Wild Guns) and Alisia (Alisia Dragoon).
Beat'em ups: Blaze is hors concours, so the Thief from D&D: Shadow over Mystara and Lynn Kurosawa (Alien vs Predator) will have to fill in for her. They are my favorite characters from their respective games.
Vs Fighting: Leona and Vanessa from the King of Fighters series. Also, Elena (Street Fighter 3) and Pai Chan (Virtua Fighter).
And also the pilot from Super Hang-On! ;)
Jill Valentine from Resident Evil and Blaze Fielding from the Streets of Rage series.
Meh Miranda is ok I guess, Ashley Williams or Liara Tsoni are more bad ass imo. Just about to play the mission on ME3 where I have to rescue Miranda's sister.. again. Looks like Miranda is going to "buy the farm" in this mission, just like a lot of the other ME 2 characters have in this installment.
For lead-female characters, some of mine are Alisia Dragoon, Asha (Monster World IV), Aya (Parasite Eve), Popful Mail, Terra (Final Fantasy VI), and Yuko (Valis). Otherwise my top picks:
BATTLE MANIA! (Madison and Crystal)

SHAKE! SHAKE! (Marina)

My favorite's always been Kitana from Mortal Kombat. Just a bad-fucking-ass combo-queen ninja assassin with razor-tipped fans (what isn't awesome about that sentence)? I'm also fond of her backstory in which she was unknowingly serving the very man who slaughtered her real father alongside her "sister" who was actually a heinous clone created by a mad sorcerer (unfortunately the more recent adaptations have shit on her story and made it less intriguing to me).
Blaze will always be my go-to for SOR, so she's more than worthy of a mention as well.
Has to be Blaze from Streets of Rage.
Also Valkyrie from Gauntlet and Tyris Flare from Golden Axe.
Did we really need a "holiday" to discuss female characters?
Anyway, controversial choice I'm sure, given her fate, but Alys Brangwin for me. I really liked her by the time of the incident, especially after talking with the NPC's in Aeido.
2nd would probably be Sypha Belnades(physically weak, but man can she wreck bosses in that game).
Honorable mentions:
Ayla from Chrono Trigger, for literally being a strong woman(9999 damage on critical if you have the patience to level her up to the point where her fist upgrades).
Nei for being in a similar situation as Alys.
The "hidden" ones, like Samus(and the aforementioned Sypha), Terri/Ellinor(pilot of the mech in M.U.S.H.A.), Zana/Anna(pilot of the mech/ship in Arrow Flash), Kissy/Toby & Tacky(Alien Sector/Baraduke), etc.
Anet Futatabi, Mai Shiranui, Cotton and Silk, Blaze Fielding, Mail (Popful), Ellinor (Musha Aleste), the Arrow Flash chick, Nakoruru (Sam Shodown), Rami (Keio Flying Squadron).
The chick out of Burning Force is cool too.
Not trying to stir anything up here, but I don't think this thread is really in the spirit of international women's day. In fact, I'd say it even borders on cringe-worthy to be honest. Video game characters are not reflective of women's rights, hard work or accomplishments, which is what that day was supposed to be about.
How about acknowledging the less appreciated women who work hard behind the scenes in video games? How about favourite female game developer, or favourite female video game artist? This sort of thing is more inspirational (and interesting) than a what your favourite female character happens to be.
^If this day is some political thing, then fuck that noise.
Otherwise, look up who the project leader is for the Phantasy Star(and Skies of Arcadia, and Valkyria Chronicles, and 7th Dragon, etc.) series is. For something oldschool, look up who the lead developers(and whatnot) were for games like Centipede and M.U.L.E. Who the music composers for the Castlevania series tend to be.
We're not ignorant/unappreciative of womens roles in game design throughout the years, and we don't don't need politics to remind us to take note of them, or to appreciate the female characters they(and their male counterparts) come up with.
Linn Kurosawa and whoever is playing this game is a total badass

Qjimbo, as a feminist, i dug your post. i get what you were going for too, but in an old gaming forum, a thread like this is still progressive - fucksake, have you seen many gaming communities?
a fair point is being made here, too, tragicallyQuote:
Imagine if video games had only male lead characters and any female characters were only damsels in distress. Women would feel quite left out if that was the case, right? But luckily, it isn't, and this thread shows the importance of why.
Samus (Metroid, pre-Sakamoto ruining her in OtherM)
Chell (Portal series)
Alice (Alice Madness Returns)
Rebecca (Original Resident Evil, had a crush on the actress portraying her in FMVs)
You know, I always try to think Genesis first, because I know the console usually has something(though not always), but in this case, an abundance of female characters.
That said though, I've always appreciated the cast of Grandia II(Elena and Tio as well, not just Millenia). Recently though, I find if I had to have a slasher in Ys VIII, I actually prefer Dana to Adol. In Memories of Celcetta I didn't care for Frieda as much, but in general I preferred to use Karna, as even when she's not effective against an enemy type, her attacks are quick enough at medium range for it to not matter.
Thanks for your support. I've never really considered myself a feminist, but I am an egalitarian. As an average person, I liked the idea of International Women's Day as a chance to think a bit more about the contributions women have made. International Men's Day is in November so to me it seems like a fair deal.
This is absolutely true.Quote:

I was just a little disappointed to see that someone took that day to mean female characters, and I do still feel this is a shallow interpretation. As some of the responses have said though, I will accept that this isn't an invalid as I may have suggested in my other post. I also suppose I can't really fault the person or others for thinking this way.
I felt I had to post something so maybe people would think about the role women have in the gaming industry in a bit of a deeper more meaningful way, that's all really. I'm certainly not going to start attacking people for their attitudes as that's something I do not agree with, I believe change has to come from within, not by shaming or bullying those who think differently.
Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn.
Nariko from Heavenly Sword.
