So it's that time again when go I back to 90's racing games (those were the best, fuck Forza). This time I've decided to check N64 library. Any recommendations on which racing games I should check and which ones to avoid? Of those I've tried, Ridge Racer 64 looks like the best, but maybe I've missed something as good or even better?
I'm nostalgic for Top Gear Overdrive and Cruis'n World. They probably play like shit now.

Should I try it even if I generally dislike futuristic racing games? I don't like Wipeout and F-Zero for example.Quote:

World Driver Championship is really great game, Gran Turismo-style. Arguably the best graphics of any racing game of that generation.
Top Gear Rally has hideous graphics but it plays quite well. I recommend it.
Wave Race 64 is very cool to play, even these days.
Diddy Kong Racing is good too.
Cruis'n World is a well executed mediocre arcade game. But it's the best of the series on the N64.
I'd also recommend Wipeout 64 (though downgraded when compare to Wipeout XL) and F-Zero, but you've already said that you don't like futuristic racers.
N64 version runs like shit. DC version is the one to go if you want to try it out.Quote:

MarioKart 64 obviously great fun on Multiplayer, but not single.
Beetle Adventure Racing is really good. It's basically a Need for Speed port just with VW's.
Rush 2 is probably my favorite, just because of the amount of level detail the designers put into it, plus the hidden stuff.
Rush 2049 Stunt Multi-player was maybe the most fun I ever had on the system. Single player mehh.
Automobili Lamborghini has probably the best graphics, but the game is pretty tedious and not a ton of fun. It's the closest the system had to a Gran Turismo style game though.
Hydro Thunder, Ridge Racer, Wave Race, F-Zero, Extreme G, and Diddy Kong all very fun too.
Now, I really cannot recommend the Cruis'n games. The control is terrible, and the graphics are so bad. I don't know how the heck I played them back in the day. California Speed is also trash. Amazing that Midway made Rush so fun, but these games so bad. Top Gear Overdrive is another one I wanted to like, but the tracks are just badly designed.
there is absolutely no doubt that it is rush 2049. it's also the best multiplayer game of all time, especially in car battle mode. the dreamcast version of this game is better though.

Top Gear Really - Floaty and strangely awesome driving physics, great music, weather effects, and car customization.
Cruis'n USA - Classic arcade racing, cool tunes (for the most part), fun tracks.
Rush: San Fransisco Racing - Crazy driving physics, lots of secrets, diverse range of cars.

Mario Kart 64 - Obviously.

Extreme-G - Futuristic racer, crazy sense of speed.
Off Road Challenge - Think Cruis'n with trucks, and off road tracks.
Penny Racers - A kart racer with heavy emphasis on upgrades and customization.
Star Wars Episode 1 Racer.
The best way to play a racer on the N64 is to put a better system on top of it and play it on that.
