Games you keep trying but end up hating more?

I know that sounds weird but has anyone else experienced this? A game or series on the surface has things that draw you to it but every time you play a game in this series...you resent it more.

For example. The Tales of games. I love RPGs esp JRPGs. I love cel shading. I esp like a more action focused combat. So why the hell do I have this unreasonable disdain for them? Well, they just seem REALLY lazy. Like Madden or Call of Duty. They feel rushed. They take every anime and RPG cliche and put it in every game. They don't seem to be trying very hard in story or mechanics or the world to explore. It still has PS2 era walking/running animations. The character is skating not walking. Environments are dull and uninspired. My friend was telling me NO!! and I would say but I want.. NO! he would say early this gen when I needed a JRPG on my PS4 and he knew I would be back to square one. I was tempted once again by the same trap. I don't know what is with me and this series.

Phantasy Star II would be that game for me. That, and the Puyo Puyo games.

I'm absolutely horrible at those games. Despite that, I can't exactly stop myself from trying them. XD

Sonic Adventure

Sonic Advance 2. The advance series really frustrates me as each game fails differently. 2 would have been perfect if not for the bosses, that I absolutely hate and make me turn off the game.

Learn to do basic stairs :v (it helps to know you don't need exactly 3 and 1 puyos lined up, 2 and 2 will do too)

But yeah, expect it to be hopeless against serious players :​/ You will probably trash the AI in newer games though (holy shit, it's so bad I have to set the difficulty to hardest out of pity). Compile-era AI is the exact opposite and a complete bastard.

I think the first is pretty good as it has classic Sonic level design but the second does suck. You just go downhill and not much else.

Honestly, the more I play any game, the more I get into it, even if I don't like it at first. That goes for all the games I've played.


That being said, there is one game I want to put to that test: Traysia. It's such a beautiful game wiyh such lazy programming. That haltity-halt walk makes me motion sick. People keep alluding to the framerate. I can most definitely assure you it is not the framerate.

I second this, Phantasy Star II is about as punishing as it is drab. One of the few I had to just stop and walk away from completely.

For me, probably Winback on the Nintendo 64. In summary of practically every underrated N64 game lists:

'It's the first cover-and-shoot game ever!!!'

And boy, is that about it. I forget how many years ago it's been, but two things changed after having played Winback: I learned sometimes it's okay to sell a game at a loss if it means being rid of it, and secondly to stop reading top-anything lists.

On the flip, one game that I hated so much playing, had to restart it three separately times, but saw it through to the end and actually appreciated was Final Fantasy Adventure on Gameboy.

What a shame. I can easily place Phantasy Star II as my favorite game of all time. It is a grind fest, no doubt, and it is one of the reasons why I love it so much. Also the music and setting. Man, listening to that music is pure bliss. Couple that with Nei's slash effects, and I'm in heaven.

Virtual On Oratorio Tangram. I just cannot defeat the boss. I just got the twin sticks mind, so that could change...

First one is the best, but it has really lame levels, some cooler levels and it would have been perfect. The second game has much cooler levels but really bad boss fights, fix the boss fights and the game would have been great. The third one is all over the place, there's a lot to like but also a lot of crap tacked on top that is just annoying, had it been more focused it would have been perfect. All 3... so close...

Me neither. My secret shame. Well, not not so secret, I suppose. Switching out my Viper II for Angelan like everyone says to do just to be able to beat the boss would feel wrong to me.

Yeah. The music in PSII is outstanding. PSIII is the one I couldn't get into.

Deus Ex and System Shock 1 and 2 for me. I love the idea behind them, but as far as cyberpunk/horror setting goes, I much prefer Shadowrun for example. There's just something that irks me about these games, and even though I played them first about the time when they came out, I haven't warmed up to them ever since.

As to Genesis... yeah, probably Phantasy Star 2 as well. I liked both 1 and 3 more, to be honest. 2 felt like too much of a slog, and I wasn't interested in the world enough to continue. To me it felt like a step back from PS1, and after having played PS 4 I doubt I'll ever go back to it. I see its appeal still, but for me it's a game I'd much rather watch a playthrough of than play myself.
