Games you keep trying but end up hating more?

I don't really have one, as I don't hate games. The closest I can come to this (and I know this is blasphemous to many), but the original Mega Man series. Reason being, I never really like them very much. Why? Too hard for my tastes, and honestly, the whole MM universe is just like unbelievably generic and unappealing to look at, the boses are like grade-school level design - wind man, cut man, drill man, toilet bowl man, spare hubcap man.... okay, that's getting a little too creative for Mega Man. I know that this post belongs in unpopular gaming opinions, but really, the more worship the games receive and the more I try to go back and play them, the less I like it, and there's 6? There had to be 6 of the same goddamn game? Ugh.

Final Fantasy I and II (the originals on NES and the remakes included). I have said on here that the first Phantasy Star was an exceptional debut for an 8-bit JRPG franchise and pretty much crushes Dragon Warrior/Quest and Final Fantasy in that category.

Gex (the first). Such a dull and average platformer, even as a 2D game. I honestly prefer the 3D ones better.

Monster Rancher series. The show was better than the games that inspired it.

Phantasy Star 2 and 3 are muddy and boring. However, the first and fourth PS I enjoy, although I haven't finished either.

Wizardry 1-3. This one needs no explanation. Such a dinosaur, even in the PS/Saturn remakes.

This is certainly one series I dip into every few years to see if it clicks yet, but nope. To be honest, I don't even really care for the concept, so I should probably stop trying.

Keeping with the MD/genny theme, I like the idea of Herzog Zwei but I'm so bad at the game that playing it usually results in frustration, either vs the CPU or against my mate. It doesn't help that the unit AI seems to need babysitting all the time either. It's never long before I hear the klaxon signalling that my base is under attack.

EDIT: I see someone mentioned Mega Man. Never grew up with an NES so the nostalgia factor for the character isn't there, but I do have Rockman Mega World and since I enjoy a bit of thorny platforming I occasionally boot it up. I understand the MD game is jank compared to the 8-bit originals, but being real about it I just don't gel with the underlying gameplay.

I'll second your feelings about Ecco. Even back in the day, I never could get in to that game.

I remember completing the original Ecco when I was a kid but it took me a long time and the last few levels were traumatic! There is no way in hell I'd have the skill, time or patience to play through it nowadays. I enjoy dipping into it for the music and atmosphere but it's not a game where you can just switch off and enjoy it, it's much too difficult for that. Thinking back there were a few games that I completed as a kid that I honestly don't remember how I did and when I try to play them these days I'm like "What the fuck?! How the hell did I ever manage to complete this?!" I obviously had a lot more patience as a kid, not to mention time!

No one has more patience as a kid. That's impossible, unless you're somehow worse than a child as an adult. What you did have more of though, is persistence. Especially when you only had access to as few games as your parents could afford on the odd special occasion.

That's pretty much where I'm at with the series as well, except I've beaten IV multiple times, and 1 at least twice. 2 and 3 effectively have the same problem, just presented in a different way. 2 is grinding, 3 is Meseta farming, both spending way too much time tying to reach a specific numerical value that, in turn, just leads to the other one anyway.


Despite how that sounds, I actually don't have anything that fits the bill for this thread. If I didn't care for it the first time around, or discovered that I didn't later, I'm not going to keep at it.

I've always felt the game was somewhat slippery and difficult to use. But, in general, I tend to have a bit of a tough time with 3D platformers.

I'm not entirely sure why.

What is it with people questioning peoples answers to this thread? If they don't like the game then they don't like the game. Deal with it. Jeesh

I wasn't supposed to say this, but the entire goal of this thread was to try to convince everyone to try games they hate even more times so their lives can be filled with miserable gaming experiences.

Very good point. Perhaps patience was the wrong word, although I was a very patient kid. Persisting at a game and playing it to death because you wanted to get the most from it, having only a limited supply of games, is far closer to the truth when explaining why I bothered completing certain games then that I can barely play today.

With all the flack directed at Ecco, I am starting to believe that Sega did us a huge favor when they made Ecco Jr. Basically, if you were a fan of games like Crystal's Pony Tales and like games that can be beaten in 20-30 minutes, that was your game. People would say that it was essentially "Ecco for dummies" without realizing how inappropriate it was to market such a brutally difficult game to the younger players using a cute character like a dolphin.

Halo games. They are so slow and floaty. Coming from other shooters, it's hard to enjoy them.

As a Sega and Nintendo sycophant, I'll take Metroid Prime over Halo for any FPS from that generation. Halo will only still be played by those who are extremely fond of it for nostalgia purposes, because, although it's fun in the beginning, it gets very dull later on. The level design is pretty boring too, and I do think people are already getting tired of the Halo franchise.

Metroid Prime and Prime 2 are so good, I'll even take them over any Half-Life as well. Also I'm probably the only one who prefers original Gamecube pad controls over Wiimote in Prime games.

I've always wanted to play Mischief Makers for the N64. I finally picked it up and.... the controls are mind numbingly bad.
The blurred 2D sprites make me want to puke... but I will probably return to it eventually just because I like the character designs.
