Favorite consoles/handhelds of all time

Maybe done to death but may have been a while. You know the drill.

1) SEGA Dreamcast. The hype it has in magazines for me from early 1998 is something I will never forget. No system before or since convinced me in its hardware design and visuals this is the future of gaming. Last 3 words are used a lot in marketing but SEGA made me feel it. So many great games. Only vintage system hooked up to my HDTV.

2) SNES. One of the GOATs. May not be popular amongst most SEGA fans but I do feel the better console won.

3) SEGA Saturn. My god do I love this system warts and all. I truly believe this was a better system than N64. Nothing against N64 I like it and have fond memories but Saturn is so loaded with great games. Fighters, Shmups, RPGs and more. The stuff I love. It's a shame the hardware was so problematic as it deserved so much more.

4) PS4. Yup, it took almost 20 years for a modern home console to be one of my all-time faves. So many games for it I love. I have over 50 retail copy games alone. Mostly Japanese niche stuff and indie games or LRG releases but some AAA games in there as well. Only going to get better and hey it has Xenoblade 2 and ARMS and the latter is Nintendo's take on Virtual On. Gotta love it.



5) Switch. I could put this on handhelds as well but I mainly use it as a home console. Yes, it's only a year old but already had a library I love and only getting more games. In all honestly it's getting those Japanese games Vita was getting but now they are in HD plus Switch has so many old Neo Geo games ...like if Neo Geo X was made better.


Handhelds or I should say dedicated handhelds.

PSP/VITA as a tie. Library of games I love. I really like the VITA hardware to use. And hey PSP has my favorite version of my favorite game of all time. Ys Chronicles I-II.

Retro: Genesis. A combination of nostalgia and modern playing has made it earn this spot.

Modern: PS3. This is probably my most-played console, ever. It has much to offer in all my favourite genres(racing, open worlds, action-RPGs).

Interestingly, I might have to say that the Nintendo DS may be my favorite machine. For the modern era, anyway.

It's a bit of an odd choice, but most of my multiplayer-based memories come from that machine. And, in hindsight, it actually had a pretty good library.
The homebrew was always fun too. :)

I'll go with my favorite console and handheld:

Console: Sega Genesis. Duh;)

Handheld: I am leaning towards the DS as well. Amazing library. Super affordable. Beautiful, sturdy clamshells and cover arts. Great looking systems.

For Handhelds

1) Neo Geo Pocket

2) SONY PSP

Retro console: Nintendo NES, probably.

Modern console: Nintendo DS for its library; Nintendo 3DS for its design and backwards compatibility to my favorite game library.



Runners-up: PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameBoy, and the Sega Master System (for no good reason)

Genesis, I mean, why are most of us here? Also, if I haven't said it enough yet, fuck RPGs.

I'm not quite sure what you think it won. Japan/Asia, and overall worldwide sales, sure. Everything I can piece together suggests Sega took the majority of non-Asian countries, including North America, before moving onto the next generation much earlier. Nintendo themselves will tell you they weren't thrilled with the rate of sales in NA. We know SoJ's Business plan was always to immediately kill off the previous console when the new one comes out. So how is it then, knowing that, that historians seem to think the Genesis stuck around until '98, when the Saturn released November 22 '94? 3 days before DKC launches, btw. We know Sega considers the Genesis/Mega Drive dead by '95, when Treasure had more bosses planned for Alien Soldier, and were told to finish as quickly as possible as the console was dead, by Sega themselves. Then comes Sega's actual official sales number of 30.75 million. By April of '94, the Genesis was reported to have sold 29 million. If you factor in that maybe 1 or 2 were sold before Sonic, and the sales of the console didn't take off until then, that's roughly 27-28 million in between '91-'94. within a 4 year time span, that's about 7 million a year. I find it hard, well really, impossible, to believe that in the next 4 years the sales of the console would slow down to not even making 2 million, because the competitor has 1 pretty game. Much less difficult to believe that it could make 1.75 in a 7 month time span before the company considers the console dead and stops noting unit sales altogether though. Finally, Shigeru Miyamoto said this to Yuji Naka in a 2001 interview with both of them:

^That would be pointless to say at all if you boomeranged around to victory. Especially when the subject of the conversation was about Naka feeling like he was always tying to play catch up to Nintendo.

So basically, Sega of Japan quits on the Genesis by '95. It takes Nintendo 4 years to catch up to where the Genesis was by then, and then barely surpass it, all the while if stock Genesis consoles are being sold at this point, we don't know how much. Historians, as usual, see the bigger number, think that explains the whole story(like the written technical specs of the consoles), and the myth of "Donkey Kong Country sinks the Genesis" is born. Oh, and years later, because the internet is as hive minded as it is, European nerds think North America was all about Nintendo the entire time.





Also, since the Vita was brought up, I love Earth Defense Force 2. I could do with more games like this. Feels like the kind of series that wouldn't have felt out of place in the Dreamcasts library.

Console: Sega Genesis.

Handheld: Sega Nomad.

Is this about favorites by console, handheld, consoles that are expanded by handhelds, or handhelds that are expanded by consoles?

If this is about handhelds:

1. Gameboy/Color + SNES Super Gameboy adapter. The best.
2. Gameboy Advance. Favorite handheld library.
3. Neo Geo Pocket Color. Favorite handheld.

Honorable mention:

Nomad + Genesis.

It's just your favorite systems for any reason that makes it your favorite system. I just like to separate handhelds form home consoles. If your favorite system is a handheld that's fine.

Plus the DS is backwards compatible with the GBA! Amen to that!

The Sega Genesis has and still continues to clock more hours than any other console we've ever owned.
The only thing that *might* have it beat there, is the PC platform (DOS and up).
