Sony's patent on the Trinitron display ran out in 1996, after 20 years. After the expiration of Sony's Trinitron patent, manufacturers like Mitsubishi (whose monitor production is now part of NEC Display Solutions) were free to use the Trinitron design for their own product line without license from Sony although they could not use the Trinitron name. For example, Mitsubishi's are called Diamondtron. To some degree, the name Trinitron became a generic term referring to any similar set.

Sony’s Wega was sort of the replacement for the Trinitron line, though they were still just completely flat screen Trinitrons. The manuals still refer to them as Trinitrons and right before they changed the name to Wega, they had a year or 2 where they were referred to as FD Trinitron. It seems like it was around the introduction of the Wega, brand that Toshiba had a 27” CRT that looked nearly identical to Sony”s own 27” Wega.model.

My advice is go on your local craigslist and just search "Trinitron" - there should be plenty of options and all are good depending on the kind of look you want. The later silver models have the true flat screen which I personally prefer. I have the KV-27FS120 and I couldn't be happier with it, an RGB SCART to Component converter, such as the one in my signature is recommended. With that it's essentially like having a SCART input on a 60hz TV which = perfection.

They had a black FD Trinitron before they introduced the silver Wega models. Here's one!

I had bought an NTSC scart cable for my Saturn several years ago, and was planning to use a converter like you have Qjimbo. Then along came HD Retrovisions Component cables for the Genesis. I picked up one of those and it even works with the Saturn, when you use the 32X jumper cable.

Nice, if that works for you that's great. In my setup I use a SCART switch box to switch between the different consoles, which goes into the converter. I like having full SCART compatibility.

I like my 32" JVC D series (using scart to component)...it beats the hell outta anything I had in the 90's. Just wish it was the 500 model instead of the 300, but I'm not gonna sweat it too much.

I don't really understand why people use HD CRTs with scaling for older video games. Might as well use an OLED TV, it'll look better. Isn't the whole point to play the games as originally envisioned?

I picked up a Daewoo DTQ-20U4SC in 2016 for $20 and it's been great. Not only is it a flat tube CRT, but it has inputs for component, s-video, composite, RF, and strangely enough, passthrough composite OUT which could be useful for streamers or speedrunners.

Never have I considered Daewoo for anything, but the feature set and picture was good for the price. I'd definitely recommend it if you come across one.

I use my composite pass through to send the image to the SD set sittting next to the HD set.

This is true. They do not require it. Do they? Yes. All HD CRTs produced upscale SD sources. This includes Trinitron.

Interesting. My set will only pass through other composite (and Coaxial) sources. S-video & Component will only yield a B&W signal on the 2nd set.

My HD CRT won't even send out a signal if I'm using component.
