Getting into fighters

I love SF Alpha 2 too, but the version on PSN is that awful PS1 port. Saturn version is much more faithful and yet again, I still can't recommend it due to bad arranged soundtrack and low quality voice samples. Better wait for Street Fighter anniversary collection that due to be released soon. It includes many street fighter games. arcade perfect, including Alpha 2.

As for 3D fighters, try Tekken 3 on PS1. It's on par with VF2 as the best 3D fighter games on a 32-bit hardware. Once again, stay away from PSN version as it has nasty interlacing artefacts. Better on the original hardware. Don't be afraid of movesets, they're no bigger than VF2 ones.

VF2 is a great choice. I find it the second most important fighter game in history, after Street Fighter II World Warriors.

I know this, but I don't see much issue with the PS1 port so far that detracts from my enjoyment, and most importantly, the console ports were loaded with options and other features that weren't in the arcade version.

I have the arcade version of VF2 on PSN, but sadly it is lacking the options and features of the Saturn version despite having pretty graphics. I do miss having a Saturn and all the games I once owned for it, but it'd probably be quite ugly on an HDTV.

So the new Blazeblue game might be what you need. 2 button fighting game. It's made so casuals fans can jump in. You don't need to remember strings of combos. It's also not too dumb either.It's nicely balanced which is strange coming from a Blazeblue game. It's on PS4,Switch on June 5th. You can try a free demo on either system I believe. Weapon Lord is an excellent fighter, but not something I'd recommend to something just getting into fighters. I'd push you towards Skull Girls, which has an excellent tutorial which covers a lot of general fighting game concepts and does a pretty good job of explaining them and how to pull it off. Beyond that, play whatever interests you. If you're satisfied playing alone, then you can enjoy some games typically ignored in fighter topics like Psychic Force or Asuka Burning Fest.

Bloody Roar 2 is a particular favorite of mine in that category, though probably much more well known.

Isn't Bloody Road 2 the best technically looking fighter on PS1? It's high res and has smooth polygons like Dead or Alive, but also has 3d backgrounds, unlike DoA.

I've given up on VirtuaFighter. That game is way too complex and any fighter in the same league I will not go through the trouble of mastering. For the most part, I am content with Street Fighter Alpha 2 at the moment and want to try King of Fighters 99 on PS1 (since I don't emulate and am using PSTV at the moment). KoF is a step up from SF in terms of complexity, yet is nowhere near as difficult as VF or similar games of that sort. I've played KoF and have generally had more success in learning it, but my current 'training' involves mastering a few characters on SF.

VF is not that hard to learn, it's just its skill ceiling among the pro players can be very high. Those people are few and far between though so if you're playing against AI or your buddies you should be fine. I didn't get which console are you playing at? PS2? PS3? PS2 has amazing VF4 Evo (stay away from regular VF4 because its jaggies fest) and PS3 has VF5. Both are some of the best fighting games ever.

KoF99 on PS1 is just bad. Long loading times and very low quality sound effects. On PS2 and PS3 there are numerous other variants to play the game in arcade-perfect way like NESTS collection or Neo Geo station.

If you play on actual PS1 then why do you ignore Tekken 3? Just because it was popular? You're missing out on the second best (after arcade VF2) fighting game of the 32-bit era.

Also if you would like to play a game, that's kinda like VF3 or VF4 but with slower, more tactical approach and interesting grapple system, when try Tobal 2. It's amazing and underrated.

I'm playing VF2 on PSN, which is the arcade version. That one is probably less convoluted than the later ones, but it's still a bit daunting. I haven't gotten around to trying Tekken yet. I never played any of the games, really. I managed to get in to VF1 and the silly Genesis port, so I should give it another chance. It's just the newer ones that seem a lot more convoluted. I once had VF4:Evo but I'm not sure if it was me or if it was really harder than the older ones.

The Neo Geo Station has been delisted from PSN, btw.

Best way to get into fighters is to forget about single player, get online and git gud.

Holy hell, this is ridiculous! Delisting anything PS3 related from the e-store, while having the same games listed for PS4 hardware is a scum.

VF4:Evo is not harder that VF2. It's the same rock-paper-scissors system. Just as in every VF game, button mashing won't get you far, but that's it.

Since you're on PS3 then I can't recommend Tekken 3 there, as it has heavy interlacing artifacts on PS3 PSOne classics emulator, which has no built-in deinterlacing option.

If you like Alpha 2 then you will probably like SF4 series as well. The latest one (Ultra) is nice.

Yeah, but most of the modern fighting games, that have online available, suck in one way or another. SFV is just not as good as USF4, Alpha games or 3rd Strike. Tekken 7 has too much flash and excessive fat, opposed to Tekken 3 or first Tekken Tag game, which were as simple as SFII World Warriors. Injustice 2 is just a bad fighting game (but amazing DC fan service, mind you)

Well the just released Street Fighter Collection has 12 SF games, which includes the original too, so your fave SF to play online should be on there.

Oh yes, this one is good! I'm waiting for the japanese release though, as I prefer original boss names and uncensored Zero 2.

Edit: just found out that Alpha 2 doesn't have online mode in this collection. Screw it, I'll skip.
