Anyone who says SNES or PS (any of them) is nuts. PS I can kind of understand, but it's only the lack of center space on the d-pad that's the real issue. The rest is fine, and there are many third party alternatives that correct this.
The Dreamcast controller is better than the N64 one, but not that much. I can tolerate it, but I have no idea why anyone thinks it's a brilliant controller, except that it's Sega-related.
dreamcast controller is fine. d-pad isn't as good as saturn or megadrive 2, but still ok. the rest of the dreamcast controller is very well done.
Just based on my experiences, yes. Granted, I haven't used anything from the early generations like the 5200. But, if you lined up all my controllers in a row, the Dual Shock would be the last one I choose to play a game. The fact that so many people evangelize for it only makes the situation worse.
Not gonna defend the N64 controller, it does fee bad holding it again.
But hey, it's the only single analog controller in existence that allows you to play FPS games in a similar fashion to keyboard/mouse, if you hold it from it's left side (D-pad = moving, analog = look). So there's that.
I like my wavebird - it does what it is supposed to do in terms of being wireless. It functions fine as a controller - although I generally play games where frenetic action is not needed so I don't know how well it would function if I was playing something where I needed continuous rapid action on the gamecube.
I love the Mega Drive six button controller, the Saturn controller, all controllers in the Dualshock series, the Xbox360 controller and the SNES controller. Although I love the Dreamcast to bits it's controller was terrible for fighting games, and I think both the N64 and the GameCube had really unnatural controller designs.
Atari 5200 controller is very similar to the Collecovision controller. The collecovision controller's number pad buttons like to give out, and its joy pad is terrible to use. Colleco's roller controller trackpad, on the other hand, wasn't bad for what it was.
Best Old School controller: the grey japanese sega saturn. It's comfortable, made for endless gaming sessions, it's unbeatable.
Worst Old School controller: light grey PSX. Hated it. This gets uncomfortable quick.
Fav New School controller: Xbone S.
Worst New School: Dual Shock 4.
