I saw this on MobyGames in the trivia section for VR.

I would also imagine they are talking about home wireless phones rather than cell phones. I would think you would need an actual data containing signal to get a cell phone to ring.
IFAIK the SVP runs at 13.5MHZ. I found online that some older cordless home phones ran in the 27MHZ region, which would be the second harmonic frequency of the SVP. Soooo maybe the SVP could be throwing out interference that a cordless phone mistakes as a cue to ring?
We're gonna need to get the mythbusters on this one.
By that logic both 32X and Saturn cause issues too. I think it would only maybe be possible if you taped SVP into the phone or something. I will remain highly skeptical.
That phrase comes from a FAQ written in the 90s, and those FAQs were choke full of silly rumors (like Eternal Champions CD using HAM... which is an Amiga thing), so yes I wouldn't be surprised if it's bullshit. Not to mention, people may have been getting missed calls and blamed the game because they weren't sure why the missing calls were showing up (but probably were also getting them before getting the game and they just didn't notice).
I suppose that if true, to fool the phone into ringing you probably would need to leave it resting right next to the console.
EDIT: also, don't Western versions of the cartridge include a heatsink? Pretty sure that should double as a shield (heck, I believe that's actually its main purpose since the SVP doesn't get even remotely warm enough to make any sort of cooling worth thinking on), so if any issues happen it'd have to be specifically with a Japanese cartridge.
Yeap...it has both sides of the PCB completely covered pretty much with RF shielding. And lets not forget those crazy metal clips that were supposed to be 'required' for the 32x add on....Quote:

It could be:
1 - FCC paranoia. They are very good at saying stuff like this and make companies put shields for no real reason other than there is a 0,000001% that something could cause interference
2 - Sega marketing. I could very well see them saying that the SVP is "so powerful that you need to keep it away from other electronics"
3 - A guy with huge creativity just invented this and it spread
