I also don't see what's so special with Strider. I mean, the port was special at the time of its release, but late releases in the console's lifespan far surpassed it.
Run Saber might look worse, but it's more impressive IMO because it's for 2-players.
I love strider and i think that is VERY Impressive
its come closer to be arcade perfect port from a CPS1 game with only 8mib cart
sounds extremely closer from arcade too and Hiryu sprite is improved over original
you also got a descent ending on md version
I love run saber too because its a strider rip off with 2 players. But doesnt even can compete.
the most impressive scene on the game its the first boss that is static background..
Is a surprise see people talking that strider is generic.. i cant disagree more...
The best description of the game is bellow
Quote:
The sound and the music is also excellent. The Falchion makes a nice clean “SHING!” effect each time it slices through the air. The explosions sound muddled, but there are other great effects, such as clanging steel, sirens, and the chatter of the Amazon women in stage four. The music also changes constantly – the first stage has five different pieces of music alone, alternating between atmospheric and dramatic.
The luscious graphics, the powerful sound, the fluid mechanics, the astounding enemies – Strider is a fantastic game, evidence that Capcom was one of the best of the era.
Forgotten Worlds was a pretty good port on the Genesis.
Count me in as a Run Saber guy.
Someone might have mentioned it some pages ago, but I don't think Westone ever made a bad looking game.
Their games always look fantastic. Just a mastery of color scheme and style.
... But for the life of me, I still don't understand the chronology of Wonderboy. Or Monster World. Or Wonderboy in Monster World... so confusing.
Strider on the Mega Drive still stands up today as a great looking and great playing 16-bit classic. It's damn near arcade perfect.
Monster Lair is Wonderboy III. Westone developed the game localised as "Dragon's Trap" to be "Monster World II", which it is in Japan. The proper name for the first Mega Drive Monster World game is "Monster World III".
The Japanese titles only got confusing when Hudson titled the PC Engine version of MWII as "Adventure Island".
Not much tops Alien Soldier
edit: wrong topic
ignore. Sorry.
Also have to say this game looked amazing at the time, with the smoothest polygon graphics I had seen on any system when it came out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miUNuE1IQ9c
For me No Second Prize is the most impressive polygonal game on Amiga 500:

I would go with Robocop 3 myself, but what was great about Jimmy White was not just the stunning smooth 3D polygons, but the maths and physics under the hood. It really did play like real Snooker and the ball physics were spot on. You can play the game and it would better your own game in real life. I'm not sure how big Snooker was in the USA, but in the UK during the 80 and 90's it was huge and used the play it loads in the local pub :)
Pier Solar has a lot of great graphics, despite my blabbing about how I can't get into SD style characters in general. Beyond that, Pier Solar's artwork and colors are generally great, throughout the whole game.
Environments: generally detailed, unique, colorful. I haven't played the game for a few yrs but I remember loving walking thru the forest with sunlight effects, for example.
A lot of special effects just for the sake of special effects. There's that energy-beam effect, pretty often, and it always looks cool.
Love the title screen, the very start of sparkles... seems like Sonic 2, before Pier Solar's title screen appears with scaling effects. I think it has leaves flying by the title screen IIRC.
The Bomberman clone looks OK and at least is great for being a functional, and fun clone. (I always wanted to play Genesis Bomberman, but I never saw a copy, and so this clone game is very much appreciated.)
Love the mode-7 flying bonus stage. In the past, I had all the locations mostly memorized.
I should really dust off my copy and give it another play-through.
This is probably the best-looking horse in that generation (large and smooth animation)
https://twitter.com/RetroGifMonster/...99394823929856
I just wish the rider was also animated as well as the horse itself.
Alien Soldier goes totally overboard with multi-jointed sprites, I love it.
Yeah, I agree with that. I’m not a big fan of the game, but it does have some crazy bosses and speed.
So many posts since I last browsed this thread. I didn't read them all but I know for sure that I much prefer what I see here on the right than what's on the left!
Both games have great graphics but the higher resolution of the Mega Drive provides a more pleasant visual experience, as usual, thanks to wider screen estate and also better aspect ratio once those games would be displayed in 4:3.
Also why does that SNES RPG has a black border all around the screen? This further hurts the presentation! Couldn't the SNES handle this game fullscreen???
And I'm pretty sure that Phantasy Star IV was done by a smaller team and during a shorter time... Would have been interesting to see what Squaresoft could have done on Mega Drive or Mega-CD...
BTW those Mega-CD super scaler games never cease to amaze me, they look so good and ahead of their time! Batman Returns, Battlecorps and Soulstar might be my favorites among those.
(I was going to make this a new thread but I guess as a new member I'm not allowed to)
Recently I dove hard into retro gaming for the first time and have been pretty obsessed with it over the last few months. I've been watching lots of videos and reading a lot online about the best games. I've been gaining an appreciation for the Genesis which I didn't use much at the time. I grew up with the Amiga and used only my A500 then A1200 (and a Turbo-Grafx 16) until 2004. I've had a few discussions online about the best graphics of any 16 bit game and found this forum through that. I thought the discourse on this board was the most thoughtful and in depth of all the places I've read. I did see some negative comments about the Amiga though and through all the research I've been doing I think the Sega and Amiga people should have a lot of mutual respect and appreciation for each other as we played a lot of the same games from the same developers. So knowing how interwoven both devices were I wondered how many games were shared between the platforms. I couldn't find anywhere what the number was so I decided to count myself from this list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._Genesis_games For the record I still think Amiga exclusives Lionheart, Agony and Elfmania are the most beautiful games of the 16 bit era!

I'm sure I missed a few so that's approx. 186 of 878 so about 21%. Much higher than I thought when I started counting (that took awhile)
Honourable mentions:
Sega CD games in common: Adventures of Willy Beamish, Dragon's Lair, Dune, Eye of the Beholder, Final Fight, ***Heimdall, ***Jaguar JX220, Links, Microcosm, Might & Magic 3, ***My Paint, Ninja Warriors, Rise of the Dragon, Secret of Monkey Island, Sherlock Holmes, Sim Earth, Space Ace, Thunderhawk, Wing Commander, Wonder Dog
Red Zone and Sub-Terrania: Both Genesis games were developed by Zyrinx who were ex Amiga demo scene coders: "During the development of Sub-Terrania Zyrinx did not possess an official Sega development kit. Instead, they hacked together their own development kit using Amiga computers." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sub-Terrania
Adventures of Batman & Robin: I heard rumours that a lot of the effects were influenced again by the Amiga demo scene but couldn't verify that except for that Jesper Kyd was involved
Kolibri: The Sega 32X game was heavily inspired by Agony from the Amiga, it even used the same font for the title screen
Sonic: In addition to a pretty impressive Amiga exclusive Sonic inspired game called Kid Chaos, about 8 years ago a programmer revealed a much closer Sonic replica called Blaze, it's a fun, 2 level playable game that he'd written in 1993 and never released https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDlr...el=KeithBugeja
I’ve brought it up several times on this board, that a lot of 16-bit Amiga/ST were brought over to the Genesis and SEGA CD.
I have Starflight on the Genesis, Amiga and C-64. I also have 688 Attack Sub and Lotus II on the Genesis.
Yeah I think a lot of people would be surprised, maybe less so on this board, but definitely in the general public that more than 1 in 5 games were shared between the systems. I also quickly went through the list for SNES and there are 123 games in common with the Amiga, so pretty good. I won't bother keeping a comprehensive list for SNES but the Amiga games on that console that weren't on the Sega Genesis or Sega CD are A-Train, Alfred Chicken, Bombuzal, Brainies, California Games 2, Civilization, Cool World, Dennis, Drakkhen, Dungeon Master, European Football Champ, First Samurai, Home Alone, Lambourghini Challenge, Lethal Weapon, Magic Boy, Morph, Mr Blobby, Obitus, Operation Thunderbolt, Oscar, Pierre Le Chef, Pinball Dreams and Fantasies, Pushover, Putty Squad, Sim City, Sim Ant, Soccer Kid, Spindizzy Worlds, Super Loopz, Super Putty, Total Carnage, Troddlers, UN Squadron, Ultima VI, Untouchables, Utopia, Whizz and Wizardry.
So again I think a lot of people would be shocked that the Amiga shares well over 220 games with the 16 bit consoles.
