I borrowed a collection of Lovecraft short stories from the library years ago which included some of his private correspondence (publishing letters is a thing with noted old-timey writers, as you may know). In a letter to his future wife, he explained that Hitler was great and that "racial purity" was the noblest pursuit available to man, but reassured her that he was fine with her being Jewish, because she was a woman and it didn't count (women aren't really people, you understand). So yeah, even by the standards of the time, dude was quite literally into fascism. He's also a terrible hack who rewrote the exact same story of unimaginable horrors driving people insane again and again, but that's a different matter.:)
