It's a golden meme. Far better than calling people SJWs. Oh btw I'm not labeling you an NPC Stu, but merely pointing out that saying people with differing political points of views are nazi sympathisers is very much straying into NPC territory. Basically anybody on the extreme left who reacts to somebody daring to have different political opinions from their own, with faux moral outrage followed by a barrage of words like nazi, racist, sexist and homophobe, is a NPC. Y'know, those people you meet in games who just just offer up the same inane lines of dialogue everytime you talk to them? Just like that. Twitter have hilariously banned the NPC meme because of the amount of people who have got seriously butt-hurt over it's use. I guess the truth really does hurt. Of course, the angrier they get the funnier the meme becomes. I want to point out that the meme isn't intended to poke fun at liberals and left leaning folk in general, just the SJW types.

NPCs and SJWs are not synonymous. There's a LOT of overlap on the Venn diagram, but it's not total. The NPC is one who doesn't engage in internal monologue to weigh the potential outcomes of planned actions or statements, to review past experiences in order to glean successful patterns from them, to verify the information received through external sources. The NPC is not fond of evaluating its beliefs when presented with new information, and falls back into a pattern of dismissal and flat rejection. The SJW is one who believes that their intentions are virtuous, but does not engage in self-review or information review to verify this. It is the whole of Western society that is wrong, and must be run through the purity wringer, so that the impure elements may be cut out of it. The SJW only holds the feet of its own to the fire when there are no other convenient external targets, ignoring the malicious actions and reprehensible behavior of its cohorts. The SJW will disregard lies, slander, and abuse launched by its cohorts, so long as the target is one of those drumph votard misoginazincels, to wit, "There are no bad tactics, only bad targets."

I don't care to make a research paper out of it, because it's all become so damned tiresome.

In any event it has power whether one thinks it is dumb or not. And whether someone likes it or not - and as MDB pointed out the more it is complained about the more power it attains. ("Methinks the lady doth protest too much.")

Words (and images) sometime take on a power of their own in society - sometimes relatively benign but often with a greater import. Remember this little guy from the sixties (they were everywhere - no mean feat since it was before the internet)?

Not terribly important in and of itself but it did evolve into the emoticons that we all love so much.

In terms of the NPC wojak the way it was created/evolved is probably of more import in the long run than what it says. In any event if it makes certain people pee their panties it means it is hitting home (or they think/realize it does) and therefore of value.

The left always ends up eating itself. With regard the NPC meme, it can be summed up quite simply by just saying "It's funny 'cos it's true."

I know I asked but it's still dumb because it just gives people another way to dehumanize others to quickly dismiss them when they don't like what they have to say. This does not work for a person with my kind of mental illness. I already struggle socializing and having empathy and understanding human nature. I seriously struggle with it. If I may make a pop culture reference. Think of how Data in Star Trek was so clueless about human behavior but saught to learn to understand them better so he could better fit among them. With my therapy, I have been on a similar journey. Problem is with the internet doing this kinda stuff, it's making it near impossible. People tell me ok this is the right thing to do or say amongst people but them a proverbial moment later they say no this is now wrong and this is what you're supposed to say. It's so confusing for me it drives me insane. I already have trouble humanizing people and I don't need clinically normal people dehumanizing others. It makes it much more confusing.

It is pretty much human nature to relegate others not within you group to a lesser status. Been going on since the dawn of time.

If you have ever studied any anthropology you soon discover that primitive people have names for their tribe/group/subculture that invariably means "the people" (with occasional minor variations thereon). The not so subtle subtext is that anyone not of the people is perforce of a lesser status. Which also explains why tribes generally fought more or less continuously with at least some (if not all) of their neighbors - and that never prevented them from fighting amongst themselves periodically.

Given the nasty polarization society is currently living with it seems we are becoming more tribal and less sophisticated socially. (I blame the two-party system for this but that is perhaps just me.)

It's interesting that you use the word dehumanizing as that is what people do when they label people as nazis, racists or sexists without actually listening to what they have to say. People on the far left are always doing it. I do understand that for somebody with the condition you have that it must seem alienating and confusing. My late partner suffered from a very similar condition and, well, let's just say we had some lively political debates. :p

The oddest thing about the resurgence of the NPC meme is that people aren't rejecting it and demonstrating how it does not apply to them, but are instead taking the lance through the chest, and screaming about how offended they are by it. I'm waiting for the hordes to start stomping on Jack O' Lanterns because orange man bad.

They call people Russian bots with impunity for daring to say that "maybe, just maybe, orange man not so bad?" That came before people got sh███er-shattered over "NPC", but it wasn't declared to be "de-humanizing speech". Well, things are going to get real funny in a couple weeks.

The fact that Nazis existed in no way justifies calling everyone who disagrees with someone Nazis. Most people who cavalierly use such cheap theatrics have no clue about what the WWII Nazis (not the wannabes we have today) really believed and did. In essence calling someone a Nazi has become a cottage industry audio meme of its own. Most people who throw that accusation out would likely crap their drawers if they ever came face to face one on one with a real WWII Nazi.

We do know that SJWs exist (however you want to define them) and that they often act in an NPC manner that disregards any information that doesn't follow their script. (Try talking to a global warming (or whatever term they use these days -seems to change at will) believer about the Norse settlement of Greenland and you will generally draw a blank look or some shabby excuse to attempt to obscure the historical record.) So they do exist (we can argue in what numbers and who qualifies) and the meme is a handy way to describe what is essentially a condition of fugue - sometimes a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.
