I think some people in this thread misunderstand the concern over the art. It's not a pixel-art vs "flash graphics" issue. Rather, the chosen style doesn't really evoke Streets of Rage. The characters seem a bit too stylized and cartoon-like. I'm not opposed to the art style in general, but I'm not sure it's a good fit for the series.

Yes, this is exactly my feelings too. I don't have a problem with that particular style of graphics per se, I just don't think that style fits Streets of Rage. We'll see. If the gameplay is there then we won't care half as much about the art style.

Another thing that piss me off..

The time just passed for Axel ? Because everything else still the same as before, including Blaze and all enemys showed until now..
they have nothing to add on visual design of chacaracters ?
Also the backgrounds are flat.. seems like a poor mobile game..
man this games sucks hard!

It doesn't look cheap to me. Most of @Pyron examples were pixel art, which is not comparable. The only one who isn't, The Vagrant, still isn't comparable because it has no Z axis and the characters are SD.

I don't think so. I bet this is a big thing for Sega, it's been requested by her fans a lot, it was a big IP back when and it's been 24 years since the last one. I do think Sega is treating this carefully, and the devs behind Dragon's Trap were a wise choice to do it. The main team behind SoR doesn't exist anymore.

I hope you are right, but SEGA fans request a lot and get little out of the current SEGA be that for Virtual On, Phantasy Star as recent examples. Also, the Dragon Trap Team is only doing the art, the development is being handled via the team, that made the simply rubbish Streets of Fury. So I'm not holding my hope.
BTW some of the Streets Of Rage members are still in SEGA and work on the likes of Valkyria series. I much rather have seen SEGA Japan team up with Ancient, SEGA China and make a kick-ass 2D Streets of Rage IV with gfx that rivals Rayman Legends.


But here's hoping, more so after Sonic Mania was done so well.

The aesthetics look generic and cheap; I'm not feeling it. Lackluster visuals aren't the end of the world though. At the end of the day, the game can look like ass but still be amazing if it plays well. If I totally avoided games based on aesthetics, there are so many good shmups I'd never get the chance to experience.

The developer's work on remaking Wonderboy Dragon's Trap doesn't provide any indication on how they'd handle making a new 2D beat-em-up. Has anyone involved in either of the main developing studios produced anything of note in the genre? If not, they really have no business getting their feet wet with an SoR sequel. The people behind Sonic Mania didn't come out of nowhere when they approached Sega. They had years of experience producing Sonic romhacks, fan games, and ports.

I wouldn't count on it. It's been said enough that nobody at Sega now knows anything about the old IPs beyond Sonic (I believe this came up in an M2 interview? I can't recall). Hell, people at Sega of Japan even said this back in the late 90s (e.g. Shining Force).

This seems like Lizardcube/DotEmu were able to spin the success of Dragon's Trap into getting access to more stagnant Sega IPs. I imagine Sega will do a cursory quality check and beyond that, their only job will be pocketing their cut.

He says it was just for fun, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to get access to that as well.

And Axels redesign is great. I wish they'd make him look a bit older though, make him look fully like a fat old motorhead or trucker. You could even have the rest of the crew aged up like that too, have an adult Skate who plays a bit like Adam, and Blaze already looks like a MILF in the trailer.

The only thing I hope to see in later reveals is maybe new enemy types and bosses etc or possibly new player characters/new moves for old characters etc. Right now all they seem to have is the old SOR2 enemies and characters redrawn in the new style. TBH to me it looks more of a SOA2/3 remake, rather than a new entry in the series, but it is still early in development. Hopefully they'll manage to get the game mechanics spot on like the originals. Graphics wise, I have no issue with the style.

It's not only Lizardcube that works on the game.

Also, it seems like both the music and the trailer were produced by companies that are dedicated to such activities.
Could be that the game is still at very early stage of its development? No idea.

To be fair all three entries had used the same set of enemies for the most part (with the occasional addition), so reusing them yet again doesn't really mean much. It's mainly the bosses that see the most changes between games.

Both Axel and Blaze look older, and the rest are just normal punks so it doesn't matter. I wonder if that's an intentional design choice, and other characters will be aged up as well. Imagine an older Skate who got some moves from Adam, or a greying Max who is slower but more deadlier than ever. I'd like for it to be intentional, but we will have to wait and see.

What they revealed so far is not even gameplay demo, but more like a concept mockups. We will have to wait to see how it will look in-game. But hey, at least we got something now, instead of SOR being another Sega IP forever staying in limbo like Vectorman, Comix Zone, Ristar, Eternal Champions, Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Fighter, etc.

The enemies they use (Galsia, Signal, Bongo) were in all three SOR games. The whip lady is using her SOR1 design, not the 2/3 one.

I'm aware that multiple studios are working on the game, which is why I framed the question as such. Your response does answer my question though. Technically yes, but yikes. I guess I'd have to actually play it to confirm, but that game you linked looks dreadful.

I'm pumped for it. Could've used more gameplay footage tho.
