Wow! OK...well I'm excited but worried all at the same time. Streets of Rage is a big part of my childhood, and although I've wanted Sega to make another SOR game for donkey's years now, with this announcement I'm suddenly worried. If it's like Sonic Mania in terms of being just as good as the classics then I will be a very happy bunny, but I'm a little underwhelmed by the look of the graphics shown so far. It's too...what's the word...cartoony? I dunno, I'll just keep my fingers crossed that it's fucking awesome, and we have to at least be grateful that Sega is apparently starting to listen to fans who have been asking them to do more with their old IP's for an eternity at this point. Here's hoping that this is something special!
I am holding out for a true Golden Axe game made by Vanillaware and I consider Dragon's Crown more of a successor to D&D Arcade games since much of the same kinda stuff is in it and directed by someone who worked on those games.
I had no idea Ancient still existed. In my opinion Yuzo Koshiro should definitely do the OST. Even Konami managed to got Akira Yamaoka to work on western Silent Hill games (and the movie!) so this type of thing isn't impossible.
They're pretty comparable, because SoR4 is obviously going for a retro look and feel, and because both will have very similar gameplay. They have more similarities than differences.
Isn't that just the shirt that's too large for him? Can be, although the "sprites" look stretched horizontally. And now that I looked at this still... there's a surprising lack of detail, like his mouth doesn't exist even, although as was pointed out, it's a still from a frame of animation. The enemies that are probably in a key frame look better (at least the front one does).
SOR4 will be as big a hit as Double Dragon 4 was!
It looks good to me honestly. I am down. Just hoping the difficulty is on par with 1 and 2 and nothing close to 3.
And Cuphead required something like 5 years to make and the creators had to mortgage their house to be able to pay for it. Or there's Skullgirls which was under development by the original devs since the early 2000s as a fan game before Konami got a hold of them.
Anyway, all of those are some of the biggest IPs of their respective companies, or sometimes it is their only one, so they put everything they had in it. Sega doesn't give a shit. If it's not Sonic or Yakuza or Hatsune Miku, then they either put it in an emulator and let it run, or they outsource it to the lowest bidder. Even Sonic Mania only got made because the fans made it for them. The 3D Ages games looked so good because the developers were extremely hardcore fanatics and decided to give up things like food or sleep until the games were fine. Honestly, it's an other worldly miracle that we are even getting SOR4 to begin with.
I'm more worried about whether or not it will play good. If it plays good, you can get used to the graphics easily. If it plays like crap, or if it's buggy as hell, then the graphics won't really matter.
Finally, a sane argument.
If Vanillaware made Golden Axe, then every male player character would be extremely effeminate or a furry animal. If you find a, a chicken or an apple to restore your health, you first need to prepare a small camp site to eat it properly. And every enemy you beat would leave back one of an incredibly large assortment of different food items. When you pick something up, you would be presented with an option whether to eat it right now, or to keep it in your inventory (eating it takes some time and you can get knocked out during it). Then between every level, you would visit a kitchen where you could combine your food items you have, and the ones you bought in the store with the dropped gold you picked up, to prepare a wonderful meal - if you already found the recipe for it that is. Cooking the meal involves various minigames like chopping up the veggies or stirring the pot, either via button mashing or finely timed button presses. If you score good you get a level up to your sword skills or your stamina. Once the food is ready, you have a choice to eat it then (in real time of course) for a significant EXP boost. Or you could put them in your inventory and eat it later on a level since it also boost your health not just your EXP, but like with the other food items, you need to first prepare a camp site to eat full meals on normal levels.
There'd be also a beat'em up part in the game. Somewhere.

Esp with those pecs.
Some "2D" Style games on steam atm, everyone with low bucket and indie developers

I'm not bothered by the art at all. Something has to be tried.
I would need confirmation of a couple things before the idea of getting this becomes a glimmering thought in the back of my head though:
1) Physical release.
2):
<- Why would I ever give up my favorite play style?
I'm a bit torn. I am really happy we are getting a new game, but I'm just not sure about it. The art style I'm not a fan of, but I could see it growing on me if the game is REALLY good. I'll need to see extensive gameplay footage before I can form a judgement.
I hope this ends up as a Wind Waker situation where it's a great game and it will be fun reading this thread and all the bitching.
I hope not. Still cant play Wind Waker Wii U without x axis inversion.
Wind Waker is amazing. Not much of a Zelda fan but that game is pure class.
Max/Adam/Asian cyborg are SoR's "easy mode" that's why everyone keeps wishing they were on the game, hehe
Wait until we see the actual game. Could still be early development, or actually a cheap mobile phone game.
BTW, cartoon antic like this one had nothing to do with 16 bits game and ended up being one of the most beautiful 2D animated fighting game: https://twitter.com/ratcasket/status/789639829474598912
It's true that this looks anatomically incorrect. The legs are too short compared to the torso. On the other hand, the right arm is really long. There is no squash and stretch effect in this frame so as is, it looks a bit deformed. There is still time but all in all, I really think they should make some of their ingame characters look taller/stretch their height and legs length because here they look as if they have been shrunk.
There's a certain charm that comes from the attempt to create / emulate something that can't be achieved; like how 16 bit hardware tried to create images like those above. It succeeded to the degree that it looked like a hand drawn image viewed through a kaleidoscope.
When you see a crisp image like above it loses the charm somehow, but would look good if you hadn't seen the original pixel art style.
Zelda was still made by the main team and was a full-on production with the full backing of NCL, big difference for me that . This seems a very typical Sammy quick cash in, very much like Phantasy Star for the mobile. Its not the 1st time a SEGA been knocked for a new look, The same happened with Shinobi on the Saturn and when AM#1/WOW 1st showed off HOTD III cel-shaded gfx there was a backlash and the team had to start again, never mind Golden Axe on the PS3 and 360. . The new looks seem to lose all the atmospheric art direction from the MD series and its gritty style. This just looks like its done on the cheap, and when you contrast it to what Ubisoft did for Rayman sequels in 2D using the amazing UbiArt Framework tech.
I'm all for SEGA using its IP, but like to see SEGA Japan development and for them to be serious productions, rather than this or that PS game for the mobile. Making scrolling beat them ups is really hard, and why even to this day none have been able to better SOR II.
By the way, high res screenshots can be found here:

I think some people in this thread misunderstand the concern over the art. It's not a pixel-art vs "flash graphics" issue. Rather, the chosen style doesn't really evoke Streets of Rage. The characters seem a bit too stylized and cartoon-like. I'm not opposed to the art style in general, but I'm not sure it's a good fit for the series.
Another thing that piss me off..
The time just passed for Axel ? Because everything else still the same as before, including Blaze and all enemys showed until now..
they have nothing to add on visual design of chacaracters ?
Also the backgrounds are flat.. seems like a poor mobile game..
man this games sucks hard!
It doesn't look cheap to me. Most of @Pyron examples were pixel art, which is not comparable. The only one who isn't, The Vagrant, still isn't comparable because it has no Z axis and the characters are SD.
I don't think so. I bet this is a big thing for Sega, it's been requested by her fans a lot, it was a big IP back when and it's been 24 years since the last one. I do think Sega is treating this carefully, and the devs behind Dragon's Trap were a wise choice to do it. The main team behind SoR doesn't exist anymore.
I hope you are right, but SEGA fans request a lot and get little out of the current SEGA be that for Virtual On, Phantasy Star as recent examples. Also, the Dragon Trap Team is only doing the art, the development is being handled via the team, that made the simply rubbish Streets of Fury. So I'm not holding my hope.
BTW some of the Streets Of Rage members are still in SEGA and work on the likes of Valkyria series. I much rather have seen SEGA Japan team up with Ancient, SEGA China and make a kick-ass 2D Streets of Rage IV with gfx that rivals Rayman Legends.
But here's hoping, more so after Sonic Mania was done so well.
The aesthetics look generic and cheap; I'm not feeling it. Lackluster visuals aren't the end of the world though. At the end of the day, the game can look like ass but still be amazing if it plays well. If I totally avoided games based on aesthetics, there are so many good shmups I'd never get the chance to experience.
The developer's work on remaking Wonderboy Dragon's Trap doesn't provide any indication on how they'd handle making a new 2D beat-em-up. Has anyone involved in either of the main developing studios produced anything of note in the genre? If not, they really have no business getting their feet wet with an SoR sequel. The people behind Sonic Mania didn't come out of nowhere when they approached Sega. They had years of experience producing Sonic romhacks, fan games, and ports.
I wouldn't count on it. It's been said enough that nobody at Sega now knows anything about the old IPs beyond Sonic (I believe this came up in an M2 interview? I can't recall). Hell, people at Sega of Japan even said this back in the late 90s (e.g. Shining Force).
This seems like Lizardcube/DotEmu were able to spin the success of Dragon's Trap into getting access to more stagnant Sega IPs. I imagine Sega will do a cursory quality check and beyond that, their only job will be pocketing their cut.
By the way, Ben Fiquet, the artist, has a mock up of a Kid Chameleon remaster on his homepage: http://www.benfiquet.com/
He says it was just for fun, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to get access to that as well.
I agree with this. The only thing I hope to see in later reveals is maybe new enemy types and bosses etc or possibly new player characters/new moves for old characters etc. Right now all they seem to have is the old SOR2 enemies and characters redrawn in the new style. TBH to me it looks more of a SOA2/3 remake, rather than a new entry in the series, but it is still early in development. Hopefully they'll manage to get the game mechanics spot on like the originals. Graphics wise, I have no issue with the style.
It's not only Lizardcube that works on the game.
The other studio involved developed this game that you can DL the demo of: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3...ts_of_Fury_EX/
Also, it seems like both the music and the trailer were produced by companies that are dedicated to such activities.
Could be that the game is still at very early stage of its development? No idea.
To be fair all three entries had used the same set of enemies for the most part (with the occasional addition), so reusing them yet again doesn't really mean much. It's mainly the bosses that see the most changes between games.
Both Axel and Blaze look older, and the rest are just normal punks so it doesn't matter. I wonder if that's an intentional design choice, and other characters will be aged up as well. Imagine an older Skate who got some moves from Adam, or a greying Max who is slower but more deadlier than ever. I'd like for it to be intentional, but we will have to wait and see.
What they revealed so far is not even gameplay demo, but more like a concept mockups. We will have to wait to see how it will look in-game. But hey, at least we got something now, instead of SOR being another Sega IP forever staying in limbo like Vectorman, Comix Zone, Ristar, Eternal Champions, Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Fighter, etc.
I'm aware that multiple studios are working on the game, which is why I framed the question as such. Your response does answer my question though. Technically yes, but yikes. I guess I'd have to actually play it to confirm, but that game you linked looks dreadful.
I'm pumped for it. Could've used more gameplay footage tho.
IMO the game looks really beautiful:
