SATURN sold 2 million units alone in the USA. Thats more than Neo Geo AVS, MVS, Neo Geo CD hardware sales combined. There is a market for this kind of Retro stuff and the more niche, the better
I would love Terracon to be on this thing; that was a really good game, it never got released over in the US (though it was planned to) and it also was published by Sony themselves. Is exclusive to the original PlayStation to boot, so it's even more demanding for a re-release.
That's a great option
Neo Geo popularity stemmed from the arcades, the consoles were pretty niche.
Neo Geo MVS was the most widespread arcade board in the world with about 1 million units and of course many people played on a single cabinet compared to a almost single user experience that is a home console.
But really the point is that for SNK the Neo Geo platform is everything they have (Neo Geo Pocket is less famous) and the emulation is doable while Sega have many consoles but the one they care the most because it was the only one to be really popular is Mega Drive which coincidentally is easier to emulate compared to Saturn.
That said finger crossed for Saturn Mini.
Never in the history of Arcade gaming has there been 2 million Arcade centres around the world, never at all. . Not a single Neo Geo title has sold better than Virtual Fighter 2 on the Saturn, not one. Even when SEGA had near 80% of the Arcade market its best selling Arcade title was OutRun with more than 30,000 units shipped across the world, a figure only bettered by Daytona USA. And I'm sure more people have played a SEGA Arcade game to that of a Neo Geo.
Systems like the DC and Saturn not only have Arcade titles to their portfolio, but also consumer games too and quite a few niche titles, which always help make a system that little bit more desirable.
Sure Saturn emu is a little more hassle but has the likes of Treasure (RSG, Guardian Heroes on 360), Temco (Saturn DOA OG XBox) and even SEGA themselves have shown (SEGA Ages line like Die Hard Arcade, Dragon Force) it can be done and the latest updates to Saturn emu's, do emu than good enough, so most people will not notice the little issues.
So its time for SEGA and NEC to get cracking on Saturn, DC and PC-Eng's mini's and join in the fun.
The Colecovision sold 2 million at once and was quickly discountinued, with no console history before or after. The Colecovision flashback sold well, as did the Intellivision flashback. The community sizes and overall public awareness of those systems is a tiny fraction of the Sega Saturn. To put things in perspective, homebrew publishers hope to sell 100 copies of games for those consoles, with big hits getting into the hundreds of copies.
Exactly. Retro is becoming in vogue. Plenty of obscure systems are finding a little niche, quite a lot with none of the might of SEGA name. And if SEGA were to include the Panzer Dragoon Saturn series the Shinning Force III series (complete with English text) Burning Rangers, Sega Rally and RSG Those alone would make it highly desirable for SEGA fans
That’s because every kid wanted a Colecovisin back then, but only the rich kids had one. I got a Colecovision flashback and had been thinking about getting a real Colecovision for over several decades. We all ended up with computers over consoles in the 80s.
And it should be noted that not all of those 2 million Saturn’s were sold at full price. Places like Best Buy were selling off unsold hardware for as little as $50.
PS1 classic needs Vagrant Story.
Ahem, who said anything about arcade centres?
I said SNK shipped around 1 million Neo Geo MVS boards and that Neo Geo popularity was due to SNK arcade business, not the niche console business (which was profitable due to the high prices).
The number of people who got to play Neo Geo games on MVS were much bigger than the number of owners of a SNK home console.
