Today there were some polls on twitter asking people which title of each franchise they want on the console. Apparently it will have only one Sonic (either Sonic 1 or 2) one Shinning Force and one Puyo Puyo.
To clarify: Sega's Japanese account created a poll asking which one of the following pairs should be included for the Japanese release:
1) Sonic 1 or 2
2) Shining Force 1 or 2
3) Puyo Puyo 1 or 2
No word yet about other regions. A lot of comments were "Uh, both?" so who knows what will happen.
Seems obvious that the three sequels are superior, but not having original Sonic looks dreadful
As long as the console is hackable, I think the games lineup is not that important. Sonic is (or was) not that big in Japan, so it might make sense including only one game.
I meant not as big in Japan as it was in USA or Europe. At least that's what I've read many times.
Sonic 1 was the best-selling MD game in Japan (~400,000 copies). Sonic 2 sold decent. Sonic 3&K might as well not exist.
Behind Sonic, the first Shining Force and Puyo Puyo games are the other big sellers.
So if they're only going to include one of each, it's a decision of "Should we include the more recognizable first entry, or the (possibly) superior second entry?"
I don't think sales numbers are going to factor into this imo - it's going to be nostalgia and general opinion, that's why I'm 95% confident it'll be Sonic 2 that will be the Sonic game they'd chose if it will only have the one title from that franchise.
My apologies then. If the games are different per region, and Sonic 1 is included in the Asian release, I might import it (I'm still contemplating on even getting the machine in the first place, only M2 will sway me tbh) . I'm one of the few who prefer the first game over the sequel.
I just checked the results of the poll (still has 4 days left, but...):
Sonic 1: 40%
Sonic 2: 60%
Puyo Puyo 1: 21%
Puyo Puyo 2: 79%
Shining Force 1: 62%
Shining Force 2: 38%

They're going to announce the results at SegaFest 2019 in a month. Again, a lot of the comments on Twitter are people saying they want both titles, so I wouldn't be surprised if Sega changes it up.
I somehow find the fact that this console is in development for so long both disappointing and impressive at the same time. I choose to believe it's the dedication to quality which is responsible for the delay.
Has it been in development that long? Doesn't seem like it.
As I recall, they announced it a year ago, and then there was a huge backlash against AtGames. After that, in September, Sega announced that they were developing it themselves and giving it a global release.
It takes more than a few months to design and manufacture something like this, particularly for a company that doesn't do home hardware anymore.
Well, there's the part where they had delayed it up to April (while also announcing the Western releases at the same time). It's just that it was in the middle of the shitstorm that was the PS Classic stuff (Sony was making announcements about that the same day and guess which one was being paid more attention to).
And yeah, I have the feeling that they'll need to include both Sonic 1 and 2. And gotta love how Puyo Puyo Tsuu is utterly wrecking Puyo Puyo :P (the lack of offset really messes with the game balance, the only thing Puyo Puyo has to its favor possibly is the plain progression without the leveling bullshit and the only way anybody would ever want to play it is if the offset system was backported to it, which I think is what Sega Ages does).
