Your favorite PS1 games.

I'm just going to say I'm making this topic on impulse and do not have a list prepared nor any idea how exactly it's supposed to be other than however many posts you want to talk about your fave PS1 games. I have many I love but when I think the game I have the most fun with and the soundtrack gets me the most. It's Strider II. Despite being such an RPG fan and so many insanely good ones on PS1 and soundtracks, I feel Strider had everything I love about a 32-bit era game. Good sprites. Backgrounds are 3D. That synth midi or whatever you call it mid 90s OST and so replayable. I have beaten it so many times. I can't state enough how much I love that music. I have more but if the topic takes off then I will mention more later. Look forward to what everyone else has to say.

Not sure about order, but these are the ones that came to mind. There are surely others though.

Resident Evil - Director's Cut
Loved this game immediately. It sucked me in with the exploration, suspense, chemistry. Such a classic.

Doom
My favorite port of Doom. I still pop it in today.

Street Fighter Alpha 3
Supposedly the Japanese Saturn port is a little better. I wouldn't know. This game is tons of fun, one of my favorite fighters.

Einhänder
Very unique shoot em up from back when Square Enix actually developed games that weren't Final Fantasy. They made a really unique fighter called Bushido Blade for the PS1 that I'll give an honorable mention to as well.

Silent Hill
This game creates an unbelievably creepy atmosphere. It has a deliberate pace, and is full of scares. It's more classic horror vibe (think more The [orginal] Mummy and Night of the Living Dead than modern jump scare horror). Never played any sequels, but this one remains a seminal gaming experience.

Darksiders 3
Fun fighter with great animation, wild characters and tons of personality.

Metal Gear Solid
I played through this game probably 5 or 6 times when it finally came out. Heck, I had played through the first level on a demo disc 100 times before it actually came out. What an awesome game. Fun fact, after beating the game multiple times, you unlock things like a bandana that gives you infinite ammo and a tuxedo to make Snake classy.

Road Rash
Just like the 3do and Saturn version, but I think this one runs the smoothest. Great game, but not quite as fun as the Genesis games in my opinion.

Theme Hospital
Like Theme Park, but you design and run your own hospital. So a business sim at its heart. Full of clever details and humor.

Twisted Metal
I can take or leave any of the sequels. The original game is a blast and is still fun as heck. I'm sure guys will knock the graphics and framerate, but the gameplay holds up, and none of the sequels feel quite like this one.

Castlevania - Symphony of the Nacht
My favorite Castlevania game. Excellent story, gameplay, move set, weapons, all sorts of stuff. I dig the rpg elements. I love the originals on the NES, but this one took it all to another level with the characters and setting. I still try to play through it at least once a year or so.

Wow, I can't believe how limited my PSX memories are. I used to have like a billion cdrs for that thing.

Strider 1 and 2 - IMO the first Strider on the double disc pack is a fantastic port of the arcade game. Unlike the emulated version on Capcom Classics Collection Vol 2 on PS2, this is based off the ROM set that the Genesis version was based off of, the one that had more music. The PS2 emulated version is based off of Set 1, which reuses a lot more music in areas that set 2 had original tunes for. Strider 2 has some beautiful artwork between stages, but the US version is missing the voice actors that the Japanese version had, that spoke the lines of text between stages. Infamous for the US version having the discs labeled incorrectly, Capcom goofed.

Toaplan Shooting Battle 1 - Will not work on a PS2, only a Japanese PS1. But you get Tiger Heli, and 2 versions of Twin Cobra/Kyuukyoku Tiger to work with. Both games give a stiff challenge, and are two of Toaplan's great shmups.

Puyo Puyo Tsuu Puyo Puyo Sun - see the Saturn faves thread for the reason why I like these.

Magical Drop 3 Plus Wonderful - like the Saturn version, I also love this one, though it is a little different from the Saturn and arcade releases. It also comes with a disc for the original Magical Drop arcade game, which the Saturn version and PS1 stand alone versions IMO took a hit due to not having the original cast. This Wonderful release fixes that issue with the returning cast from the arcade game.

The Parodius games - I know I forgot to list them on the Saturn thread, they are a little better on that console, but I like them on the PS1 as well. I'll promptly kick myself not for not listing them on the Saturn thread.

King of Fighters 98 - Yes, there's some removed animations, but this really is a great port of KoF 98. Load times aren't that bad, and the animation frames cut aren't that noticeable, but you get a solid fighting game here.

Last Blade - pretty nice port of the first game, and it isn't expensive to buy. There's the double pack on PS2 I bought at the same time as this version, but this version has a few hidden playable characters that the arcade (only 1-2 of them are unique to this game though, the others are the boss characters), and PS2 versions of the first game don't have. The game is also a bit easier than the arcade game. I can blow through the PS1 version with Akari, but the arcade and PS2 versions wipe the floor with me by the 3rd opponent.

Lethal Enforcers 1 and 2 - surprisingly some voice clips from the arcade didn't make it into this release (Konami being lazy I suppose), but you get 2 great light gun shooters for the price of 1. Still cheesy after all these years though.

The first and 3rd Ganbare Goemon games, the ones that play in 2D, avoid the middle 3D Goemon game as it's awful. Though the language barrier could be a hindrance in them, but still solid platformers.

Gradius Gaiden - quite simply, a masterpiece of the series. I still prefer it by a wide margin over Gradius V.

In the Hunt - The PS1 version has less slowdown than the Saturn version (Xing did the PS1 port, SIMS the Saturn port) and actually boots up. The Japanese Saturn version has that bug, where you have to boot the game up with no controllers plugged in for it to work. Strangest bug I have ever heard of.

Symphony of The Night. Not a terribly fair judgment on my part though, as I didn't have a PS1 when it came out, nor do I know much about its library. I sought SoTN out because of its reputation, rather than encountering it because of the platform.

1) MGS - One of the most amazing games of that Gen

2). Alien Resurrection - A overlooked gem of a game that must have been pushing the PS to its limits

3). Colin McRae Rally - Just a perfect driving game

4). Ore-no Ryouri - So clever and so original.

5). Colony Wars Vengeance - Stunning space game that looked amazing

6) Toca World Tour - The best AI ever seen in a racer (at that time)

7) Syphon Filter 2 - Just a great adv game

8) Harmful Park - Ace 2D shooter with amazing visuals

9) Vagrant Story - Awesome RPG with most prob the best 3D visuals I seen at the time

10) Medal of Honor - Stunning game with awesome sound effects

My favorite PlayStation game is the one where you set the console on fire

Vagrant Story is another one of my faves. Set in one of my favorite game worlds. Ivalice. Vagrant Story could really use a remake or a sequel to update it. The game is phenomenal.


Now I do have this game on Saturn but I first played it on PS1 and one of my fave RPG series of all time. Grandia. The music,the characters and everything else have so much charm.

Misadventures of Tron Bonne. Love this game and miss this series.

Final Fantasy IX. Easily the best FF on the system and the last traditional FF mainline game.

When i was little i used to like Twisted Metal Small Brawl...

Vib Ribbon is a fave of mine; quirky.

I like a bit of Tekken 3 though mainly for its impressive technical aspects. I've only just started on Crash Bandicoot and am enjoying it quite a bit.

I never really got into the PSX. I liked Croc. I've tried MGS but never really got that far.

the japanese version isn't a little bit better. it's miles and miles better. the dreamcast version could be argued is nearly on par with the saturn version but the ps1 version is a joke in comparison.

I do agree the game is amazing. that and street fighter 3 third strike are perhaps even my favorite street fighters.

I know it uses one of those ram carts for extra animations. The last time I checked, it was selling for huge money, so sadly I doubt I'll ever get a copy. While I know that the Saturn version is supposed to be better, the fact that I've never played it gives me a head in the sand kind of feeling about it. I love playing it on the ps1, and I don't know exactly what I'm missing on the Saturn. And if the prices stay where they're at, it will most likely remain that way for a long time.

I think I own about six games for it, I was still enjoying my Genny and Neo-Geo when I got one for Christmas. So it's Symphony of the Night for me.

The DC version is supposedly inferior to the Saturn game. I have Alpha 3 on DC and Alpha 2 on Saturn. I can certainly say that Alpha 2’s graphics on the Saturn are much better than Alpha 3 on DC.

I’ve only ever played Alpha/zero 3 on saturn. As a newcomer to the series i just didnt even bother with the other versions of the game. Never touched anything but the saturn version.

Personally, I disliked the SFA3 additions of the excessive graphics FX, which clutter up the screen to me, and the annoying ring announcer. I sadly never got to play the Saturn version, but I do have the DC version with its horrible and tiny dpad.

Back on subject, for PS1 I think the Crash Bandicoot games are a hoot, including Crash Team Racing. I love Road Rash. I like Tomb Raider 1 and some of TR2, believe it or not. Really, the PlayStation games I played the most were compilations like Namco!

I loved playing those Namco Museum collections, along with the Midway Arcade Treasures. It was the 1st time I could play the arcade games of my youth with near arcade accuracy.

Crash Team Racing

Maybe Crash Bandicoot 2 ... Crash was a great character back in the day. No 90s “tude,” he was just a loveable idiot.

I have Mega Man 64 and then Legends 2 and Tron Bonne. Love them. I do like the analog support on N64.

I'm a big fan of the Bushido Blade games. They might top the list for me. There's also something about Um Jammer Lammy and Grid Runner that I like a lot, which is weird because I normally don't like those types of games as much.

Dumb game but loads of a fun is Rising Zan: Samurai Gunman. In a way it reminds me of No More Heroes but with a western theme.

I love the PS1, but the PSOne's design reminded me of a cheese toastie maker, or a miniature George Foreman Grill. I can't explain why, it just does.

It's been 21 years since I played it but now playing G-Darius again reminds me why I loved the game back then. Yup, easily one of my favorite PS1 games. Music is great. Gameplay is still awesome and the bosses are presented so well.

Yep still have the SCPH-7001 don't use it though because the PS2 runs the many games just as well for me but never could see getting rid of it. Hell because of the versatility of the PS2 and how it dose such a good job I have two in use one for the LCD and other for CRT.

I have three consoles. One is hooked up to a TV and one has a screen attached to it that I occasionally play on the road. The third... I think I'm going to give it away. I don't need three.

I still have my original Playstation I got in January 1997 and a blue debug unit Playstation I bought in 2008.

Not too many people mention Granstream Saga, but definitely one of my favorites that get lost in the PS1's RPG shuffle.
Loved the battle system, loved it all. I consider it the last installment of Quintet's Heaven/Earth series, some may disagree, but I think it caps off the SNES trilogy perfect.

Also Bloody Roar 2. Man, what a stunning fighter in every regard. Even the poster is badass.

I lost my PS1 (along with my N64 and Dreamcast) when someone broke into our apartment back around 2001. I ended up getting a PS2 that I used to play PS1 games.

Didn't think I'd be the first to name Klonoa three pages in, yet here we are. :)

1) Klonoa: Door to Phantomile - Great OST, beautiful story, excellent gameplay, blah blah blah...
2) Umihara Kawase Shun - Brilliant physics platformer and a huge leap above the SNES original.
3) No One Can Stop Mr. Domino - So flawed but I love the premise and originality (am Artdink fan).

I have 2 PS1 systems. An old one stored away in a box from my brother and My PSone system which has a space on my Desk with the small OEM Screen mounted on it.

I had a PSOne with the LCD. I’d sold it to someone at TNL.
