AMD sold those console chips with a very small profit margin. Their desktop CPUs were getting trounced by Intel for quite a long time, as well as their server CPUs. The introduction of the thread-ripper CPU has caused major ripples for Intel's server market, but Zen has also caused a major reaction from Intel in the consumer market, where they've reacted by releasing 10 different CPUs to combat AMD's higher core count (lower priced) CPUs.
Nvidia's value has skyrocketed because of their investment in deep learning, which is part of the automobile industry's smart/self driving cars.
