Based on a comment on one of their subreddits, it is voxel based. I think the Sega version looks closer to the Amiga 3000 version than the 500 version, which is interesting.
The good use of color really helps tie everything together.

Having a player sprite works much better than a 1st person perspective.

I don't know of a commercial game on the system that has an effect like this.
