My brother originally got me a portable 1 TB HD for my Wii U and works kinda ok. The issue I have it sometimes I get an error message involving it or as of now, It can't even see the damn thing anymore so I'm wondering what you guys have in your old Wii U system that hasn't tried to shit the bed so to speak.
I googled a bit and looked at a few options but I'm kinda curious as to what you guys have.

Have you also tried plugging the drive in to a PC to see if it still works? I could be that the filesystem somehow got corrupted, and just needs to be re-formatted.
I use the 2TB Seagate USB backup drive with my PS4. Some people don’t like the brand, but I’ve never had issues with their drives. If you’re worried about it, there’s always Western Digital. My internal 1TB drive is Hitachi, btw.

I just have some 500GB Seagate attached to it and have for years. Wii U will never need anything even remotely close to 500GB if you mainly use physical games. I have 30+ games for it and saves and DLC and only used maybe 25GB. I will just assume the HDD is connected to both USB ports in back.
Yeah I think it did. However I plugged it back it and the Wii U saw it this time and told me to Format it again so I did. So far everything is ok but like before, I want to wait a moment to goto the Wii U's main menu before starting it up. The drive is powered by the USB slot.Quote:

I found out interesting enough that when I plugged in a second USB device, the Wii U will not let you use two at once. It will however let you copy files from the two units but won't let you access the main dashboard. I really don't know how much longer the Wii U eshop will be around so like I told Gamevet when we met in person, It's a damn good idea to grab those exclusives while you can since yeah they won't be around anymore once the eshop goes away.
This is especially relevant for a lot of games that have had minor updates added. I went ahead and pulled out all my discs and let a massive set of updates install into the system. Xenoblade Chronicles X's alone was god damn huge mainly for the stuff that lowered the loading times for pretty much of all the game. There were some minor things here and there but yeah, update your Wii U before you can't do it anymore and grab those exclusives.
Super Mario Bros. 3 I would 100% suggest getting as it's the best version along with it including ALL the e-reader content from Japan and the U.S. which adds a ton of cool extras.
Well this is a random as fuck update post.
I talked to Gamevet about this earlier but in the end I decided to give a hearty fuck you Nintendo to this one.
I was checking out an old YT video about the external storage options and found out there was a hidden function in the settings menu. When you're in the menu, Highlight the Data Management options & then hold the D-pad in the down direction for about 5 seconds. After that while still holding the D-pad in the down direction, Hit the + and - buttons at the same time to bring up a hidden option to disable the external device's auto shutoff function. Doing this 100% fixed the issue with that original drive I have and the system now runs perfectly.
I mean god damn what a lame as hell way to hide a fix.
Edit: I did some hard searching on YT about this. Outside of that one video I found there is literally nothing about this function.
Super Edit: A couple of hours later and still nothing on this fix. I read the original online manuals for the Wii U and this was mentioned nowhere at all. This shit just pisses me off. lol
Wow, never knew that was a thing. The Wii U has one of the worst designed menu systems what with the little people running around and the odd sound effects, not surprised they hid what should have been a simple option.
I still like it though, I was just playing Minish Cap on the gamepad the other day. I could run it on the Switch with mGBA, but I prefer a real D pad.
No need to worry about the eShop going down -- everything has been backed up by pirates, excuse me archivists, including the updates and DLC. The entire USA eShop contents (including the Virtual Console) should fit on a 2 TB drive... or so I'm told ;)
Edit: I'm kidding on the last part, the better option is just to softmod your Wii U and back everything up to your PC.
That's pretty funny as it is. What's funny about that fix was how obscure it was. I was told that the drive wasn't fully compatible so I ended up spending money on another drive which never worked either.
Money wasted on something like this is the only thing I'm mad about. Granted it was like 40 or so bucks but still. I'm pretty much looking around the interwebs to see what other sneaky shit Nintendo hid away in the system menus.
Nintendo is just weird. I booted up my Wii U (in handheld mode) when I got home. I ended up purchasing Super Mario 4 (GBA) and I didn't have to enter my online password to make the purchase. Every purchase on the Switch requires a manual log-in to make a purchase. It's a real pain in the ass!

That's a system setting but yeah the Wii U eShop is the design of an idiot, it was trivial to log in to the server from your PC (no Wii U or account needed). At least Nintendo wised up with the Switch.
Again, Nintendo is just weird. I don't recall ever having to do that with the PS3, Wii U, 3DS, 360 or PS4. They just make silly changes for no reason at all. And personally, I think the menu system of Switch, Wii U and 3DS is just horribly designed.Quote:

yeah I never have to do that. Then again I use paypal as I don't keep any CC info on consoles. Yeah in those settings you can change it to skip the password for using a CC or Paypal
