"Beat them all"? Where do people come up with this stuff?
It's a genre name in other countries. Like the way Europeans generally refer to 1 on 1 fighters as beat 'em ups.
wait, EU folk call vs fighters beat-em-ups? man, that's confusing. at least beat them all off or whatever sounds about the same
I've never heard anyone use anything other than "beat em up" when talking about the genre, regardless of their location. I'm pretty sure its mostly universal in english speaking countries now. I believe ""beat them all" was the term fonzie came up for project y because it has some rpg elements.
Here in France "Beat them all" is for talking about the genre since 90's.
Beat'em up or VS Fighting is the same thing for me but not a Double Dragon/SOR like game.
I think it is because you need to beat ALL enemies in a specific area to go throught the next one.
Also journalists used this term to make a difference when the famous Street Fighter 2,
King of Fighters and Mortal Kombat series came up in the arcade zone in Europe as big success.
smurdd is right, most English speaking countries uses "Beat'em up" but I think the best term
would be "Side scrolling beat them up". The term "Brawler" is also used but not frequently.
All I know is, there have been many times when I wanted to look up this genre, with the phrase "beat 'em up," only to get English written articles about fighters. You see it on covers of European magazines and stuff, too.
In the 80's everybody said "Fighting games" but it was an approximative term imho.
i've heard them called belt scrollers before as well.
Belt Scroll Action game is the japanese term. It pretty much sums up the genre, action on a conveyer belt... only when talking about God Hand and other 3d 'beat'em up' do things get confusing.
I want this game . Bad. Does it play just like SoR2? Sure looks like it. Who did the sprites?

Wikipedia actually has a pretty extensive write up on the history of the "beat 'em up" genre and their relative the one-on-one "fighting game".

No mention of Beat 'em alls. I'm sure somebody will try to shoe horn it in there eventually though.
If it is basically only used in France, why would an English wiki list the term? The French do all sorts of things in a way that is only theirs anyway. I've seen Fighters, Brawlers, Beat-em ups, Fisticuffs, and other terms for hand to hand movie violence used for One on One Fighters and Beat-em Ups. Genre names are confusing when they leave one generation and try to continue into another.
Beat 'em up will always be the default term for me, but belt scroller is nice to use now since 3D came along and confused things for people, it describes the genre well.
It's all about how these games play after all, and the enemy management, spacing etc in a true belt scroller is different to the way a 3D brawler works.
