Imo, the animation is very well handled and the solid cell colors similar to guardian heroes is a good choice. However they should have decided to design the characters in a more realistic way and make them look taller/less chunky. For the bgs, it looks fine but in contrary to dragonstrap, it should have looked more realistic, darker and visually less like a comics.

You have no idea how often kids use that trope when drawing fan art, add a beard, slap a new shirt on there and BAM! fanart.

It's like they planned to remake sor1 and then got the Sega deal, so they quickly added a beard and called it a sequel. not since Sonic 4 have I felt this insulted as a Sega fan.

Right... This looks like an uninspired fan remake, not a sequel. Like that shameful Double Dragon IV game, except with admittedly much more effort put into it.
Also, the fact it looks so much like a remake probably killed the last remaining chance that Sega might eventually accept to approve and release Streets of Rage Remake.

These franchises we're talking about stopped being worked on for a reason, if they believed they could get enough money to put that much budget into them they'd have already been releasing more games before to keep the cash cows going (especially when Sega needed money badly).

There have been multiple shot-down efforts to make SOR4 ever since 1997, you guys should be glad that at least it's getting somewhere this time.

A new graphic direction was inevitable after so long anyway. I'm more worried about the music - not because Yuzo Koshiro might not be in it, but because he is likely in it. His current style might not fit the new game. But really that's just me worrying about the music the same way people are bitching about the graphics.

SOR Remake was pretty bad. It tried adding every feature from every SOR game, which meant that you could mix and match the game style in a way to completely break the gameplay. The poorly edited sprites and the bad level design didn't help either, and the autoscrolling vehicle levels had no reason to be in the game other than "hey look at me I restored the prototype levels they took out for a reason".

But the music was dope, I give it that. It's funny though, the original tracks I loved got crap remixes, while the original tracks I disliked had remixes I really liked.

Pretty bad? That sounds harsh. Break the gameplay? I can't see how the gameplay is broken. The graphics are certainly a mixed bag, but overall it's still pretty polished, I think. And I'm not just saying that because I contributed to it. :p

I've heard Sega execs discussed making a 3D sequel for the Saturn and then Dreamcast but none of them made it very far in development. I thought that was a shame because with the release of Sonic Adventure I was hoping Sega would bring back more of their old franchises. I'm not claiming to know more than Sega about the profitability of these titles but I find it hard to believe that a quality SOR sequel wouldn't have sold well in the late '90s.

That is not bad, or ugly, by a long shot. Those are good looking backgrounds, and the characters are tastefully done.

We can't expect 3rd Strike level stuff from smaller teams. Capcom/SNK/Arc were masters in sprite art for combat games... Give these guys a break.

I'm personally looking forward to this, it's always interesting to see a group of passionate people try to make something new with a franchise that has this much cultural impact. It's a shame that the focus is more on aesthetics, which are, ultimately, completely subjective, and not on how freaking cool it is that the people involved actually know their stuff, and are passionate about the source material.

I agree with you man. I don't know why everyone is hating so much on this game. It looks nice and fluid to me with a nice hand drawn style. Saying it looks like a Flash game is really harsh. I'd compare it more to something like Dragon's Crown, and I don't recall anyone complaining about that game's art style.

I'll admit, at first when I saw SOR4 I was super disappointed. But then I watched the trailer a few more times and really examined the screen shots and realized that this game looks pretty good. The backgrounds are detailed and most of the levels look true to the Streets of Rage style IMO. I'm just terrified that there will be some generic "rock" sounding soundtrack that will ruin the entire experience. If Koshiro is on board (which I'm thinking he is due to his non denials) I am praying that he pulls out the big guns and goes retro with that soundtrack!

For all the haters, give it some time. Let's see how it turns out. It may play brilliantly, despite the fact that you may not like the art style. This whole thing reminds me of the new Toejam and Earl game Back in the Groove. People bitched and bitched about the art style and how it didn't fit Toejam and Earl. Well, I played the Beta a few months ago and the game turned out GREAT! True in every way to the original games, despite the art being different. Hopefully Streets of Rage 4 will turn out the same.

There is something I don't like about the playable characters art in these images. I'm not really sure about what it is, maybe it is because I get the impression that Blaze is too big. But I like that the street looks broken, meaning that that area of the city was abandoned by authorities (or maybe it was anexed by the Brazilian government lol).

But I'm gonna wait for more gameplay footage before I like or dislike it. Apparently, there is a juggle system in place which I don't care much about, but at least it means they are adding special features to the multiplayer mode, which is a good sign that they are probably taking the game very seriously.

The gameplay was crap. You could just run around using the blitz or flying kicks and mow down everything. Of course you could turn that off, but it's something that should not have been there - it should have amalgamized all the gameplay elements while balancing them out to create a cohesive core, instead of just giving you an option whether you wanted to play as SOR2 or 3. If anything, such options should have been reserved for some kind of "edit mode" or debug mode, so the main gameplay has fixed rules to be accustomed to.

If SOR4 looks like a flash game, then Dragon's Crown looks like a cartoon from a Monty Python sketch.
SOR2 and 3 had a very eclectic soundtrack, a generic rock tune wouldn't be out of place there at all.

It's probably what I brought up earlier, the walking animations in particular are the one that feel odd (especially for Blaze).

The chars don't look like they walk on ground but float above it. Difference in detail has such an effect.

Like manny have said, I dont like or feel of the simplistic cartoony look of the characters. It's a personal choice. I feel SOR needed a proper high quality pixel art treatment in the likes of the latest King Of Fighters or SF3. Other then that I/m not saying its not going to be good, but I'm just desapointed and that alone takes away my excitement for the game.

I agree that I wouldn't have gone for the "Add option flags for everything to try and make everyone happy" approach, and just make choices. That said, I still wouldn't call the gameplay crap or too easy. On the highest difficulty setting, I thought the game was challenging (not SoR 2 Mania challenging, but still challenging). I thought the survival mode was fun, too.
