Yeah. Nothing wrong with extra hardware in the cart so long as it respects VDP bandwith and such, limitations that define the original machine. It's a fascinating concept imo, just a shame that it's probably contributed to the game's troubled development. At least we've heard a demonstration of how this thing was used to add sound channels to produce an enhanced soundtrack. Presumably in-game sampled sound FX would benefit greatly from 24 additional channels as well.

Having said that, I'm just as impressed with the continued technical boundary-pushing on the stock machine over the last decade as well.

yes... BUT at this point it's more effective to add a SoC inside the cart and just let it handle everything instead of "helping" the 68k. So after recapping the whole console, OCing the cpu, replacing the whole sound processing system and the plethora of mods people do to their consoles, what is left of the thing that gives the console its name?

Also with the current low TDP of modern cpus, the MD could almost run (from the cart, I mean) an undervolted U or at least Y x86 chip and just run non AAA modern games... in 63 color glory.

I mean, using MegaColor for streaming anyone? The other day on Discord we were joking about using it to stream video from Netflix or YouTube lol

LOL!! I like that idea especially if there's a way to do it wirelessly, so you could stream 240p video onto the Nomad. Now that would be a sight to see.

Can you use Game Gear's TV tuner on it? That would qualify as wireless streaming lol (yes, you could send your own analog video stream locally with a low-powered transmitter).

I don't think the Nomad can take the TV tuner, though using it to stream to a Game Gear is indeed something that has been done a lot of times (bonus points the more out of place the source platform is).

I was thinking more like a WiFi SD card to stream data to a flash cart, with a PC encoding to MegaColor format on the fly.

You could do away with the PC and include a coprocessor in the wi-fi module itself to handle the conversion, I guess. No idea how computationally expensive it'd be to achieve reasonable quality, though every independent slice is only 144 pixels (72×2), and if something like this was attempted back in the day they'd probably shove the tasks to an ASIC that decodes on the fly (it only needs to be fast enough to decode two slices per scanline and may need to buffer like at most only eight slices ahead of time, so it doesn't sound unfeasible).

A bigger issue would be the UI, window plane and plane B are still free but the colors are all used up! (I guess that when the UI is visible it'll need to take up over the space of entire slices to make it work so it can stomp over their palettes)

EDIT: wait, the above is assuming it's getting raw RGB data at the correct resolution, I guess that this isn't the case and you also need something to decode and resize the stream in the first place lol

Well back in the day it wouldn't be wireless, I guess you would need SCSI to handle the data transfer. But yeah the processing seems doable, start with uncompressed AVI or QuickTime 1.0 and use bilinear interpolation to resize it (unless there's another method that's less computationally expensive). You might get some artifacts on hard edges but probably not too noticeable in motion.

For the UI, how about when you press start the video pauses and the frame changes to black and white, then you have all the colors you need for the UI. What would be interesting is if it's possible to show the video fast forwarding and rewinding with that limited processing power. Basically the world's most complicated VCR lol

That's come up several times, I don't think I've seen a definitive answer. My speculation is that it was created in After Effects or similar software.
