This is a really good gameplay of it:

So far I could notice that:
- The scrolling still stutters at times.
- Explosions still sound bad.
- SFX are still too loud.
- Music tracks have been really improved, even using more stereo panning and better sounding instruments.
you mean when compared to the Mini rom, right?
Yes.
The music sounds even better now. Hope Hide finds a way to release that amazing Fantasy Zone port too.
I'm a little confused on history behind this. Was this the fan made port that M2 took over and put on the mini? Is this an unofficial dump of that rom and patched up? Or is this the original fan author's source?
I'll try to clarify:
- It's officially licensed by Taito as the Mega Drive mini version also was, but with more input from them this time AFAIK. Taito also gave permission for the different additional packaging items which were used by different retailers in Japan.
- Zuntata oversaw the work on the music tracks this time.
- The music fixes/improvements were made by WING☆ (@wing_ghost on Twitter)
- It uses a hacked/altered version of the XGM audio driver to allow FM and PSG sound effects. Though IDK to which extent they were actually used.
- WING☆ focused on bringing the soundtrack closer to the arcade version and improving stereo panning since it was one of the highlights of the arcade experience; he also fixed instruments which sounded out of tune, etc.
- This release contains all the content of the Mega Drive-mini release, although with additional fixes, and the Extra version. And many options to adjust the gameplay.
I'm yet to see a comprehensive list of the SFX changes if they really happened.
Interesting. Does any of sega's involvement in preparing this for the mini translate into sega endorsing or licensing the cartridge release in some way? If so, I think that would make it the first physical release game for a sega system that is endorsed or licensed by sega since Karous on dreamcast...
I take it this is the same version of the game that was on pre-order at Strictly Limited? When is that actually shipping? I actually bought one and totally forgot...
I believe the last one was the 2017 re-release of "Monica" for Sega Mega Drive.

Yes. But, unlike the Columbus Circle low quality shit, they are using good quality carts manufactured in Germany.
There's no Sega or should I say SOJ involvement in either port. It's a Taito and M2 thing. M2 had the Sega allowance but there are no Sega logos in the Darius Extra Version cartridges.
Correct.
Tec Toy stuff is and has always been approved by and officially licensed by SOJ. They still report directly to SOJ regarding all their Sega-related line-up.
Their carts have Sega logos and all. But they're poorly made and non-level-shifted these days.
The old ones were as good as anything else.
The question now is, when will this be released?
The version of the game that is being sold at Strictly Limited is supposed to be shipping in August, from what their website says. Also, it's still available for pre-order, so for those of you still on the fence, you can still hop on this. It's a great game, and the updated, cleaned up version is going to be even better.

The US version has reversible box art.

Still looks pretty darn nice, all things considered.
Agreed. I pulled the trigger and pre-ordered this. I was very hesitant, due to the fact that its been over 9 years and I still don't have my copy of Paprium. I also pre-ordered Mega Turrican Director's Cut. The cost for this game on eBay is absurd. Its cheaper to get this CIB from these guys. Go big or go home!
So Darius shouldn't be arriving until August? I was starting to worry that mine got lost in the mail or something.
Any word on when Mega Turrican Director's Cut is going to be released?
Aha! Ok thanks. Looking forward to both of these.
Well, we've gone from an August 2021 release back in June, to Q3 2021 around the end of July, to now Q3/Q4 2021 now that August is nearly over.
This thing just keeps getting pushed farther back :(
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand now it's Q4 2021. I figure by November, it'll be "Early 2022" or something.
I'm a big fan of the first Darius game, having now been exposed to it thru the Cozmic Collection. I can see why the series is respected as a classic in Japan, although Darius II feels like a step too far (the dev team admits the extreme difficulty was a last minute change lol).
I also felt that the PCE Darius Plus is quite excellent - given the necessary changes made to adapt to single screen play.
How's this port in comparison gameplay wise?
Yeah, I checked my account to see if any updates had been added. Nothing to report. I think it's just going to be a while. At least it's something else to look forward to. Fortunately there's a good deal of new games coming out or in development.
Took a little longer than I thought (I figured it would happen in November), but now it says Q4 2021/Q1 2022.
Sure are a lot of delays for this.
*edited, wrong thread*
Just wanted to post an update that I received shipping confirmation from Strictly Limited this morning for my copy of Darius Extra so they are starting to go out now.
This is great news. I also saw a tweet this morning of people receiving the Mega Man Wiley Wars re-issue in the mail. So it looks like some of this stuff is starting to move.
I haven't received a confirmation for any of the games I have on pre-order, but this is good news nonetheless.

I did not know about Mega Turrican Director's cut...What's different?
I don't know for sure, but if it's like the SNES version, then it's a prototype sold as a director's cut.
Mine arrived from Strictly Limited this afternoon. So everyone else should be getting theirs soon as well if they haven't already. My initial impression of the cartridge is good. Seems to have a double beveled edge and feels of good quality overall. Slip cover is reversible with the older black grid styling on one side and European blue theme style on the other. Mine arrived in the black grid style already facing out and I've left it that way for now.
I got an email about shipment, so we'll see when it arrives. I'm really excited to play this, so I hope it comes soon. I'll definitely post my thoughts as soon as I have a moment to play it.

I checked again to be sure on this, and yeah there is a bevel on it on both sides. It doesn't taper to a perfect knife point but it is there and certainly better than any of the Columbus Circle releases!

It surprised me that the back of the cart is just plain with no markings. It looks cheaper then a bootleg cart.
Also, any ideas what the difference is between Old, New, and Extra modes? Theres an extra option that unlocks when you beat it but Im clueless to what it does. There's also a name you can input for high score that does something.
