I have played alot of Genesis games that had a serious edge to them.
Feel free to share what games you think have gritty atmosphere as well.

Hardcorps?
What does gritty mean?
Well, lok at Gear of War.
I suppose Ghouls and Ghosts, Splatterhouse, Flashback and Another World are some of the most atmospheric games I've played on Megadrive, dunno if you'd class them as 'gritty' or not though
I barely know what Gear of War is. Some brown/grey 3D shooting game on some new console with a guy with too big armour and an always relaxed look on his face, even if he fights monsters hundreds of times bigger than him.
He doesn't look relaxed. He looks "always constipated". Next-gen graphics for the win!
I'll always say Splatterhouse - especially 3, or Castlevania: Bloodlines, it's a little stylised but still has some gory imagery
I can't find a good definition of gritty... is it "dark"?
what means gritty,is it english oh by gollygosh thats such an difficult word to anticipate to.Quote:

Gritty means to do with the harsh parts of reality, particularly with urban living. It has connotation of grimness, struggle, misery, poverty and is generally a downbeat way of looking at life. Streets of Rage (number 1) easily fits into this category.
Impressive definition, Agent Smith.
Okay. Thanks. Maybe Shadowrun fits to the category.
Dark Castle. It is a desperate struggle of a single lonely peasant agasint the never-ending household pests of the Black Knight. Drab, misery causing color schemes and a single organist playing music emanating all through the castle grounds. It's so gritty you could grit your front drive with it. :p
And the laugh of the day award goes to... Kikoskia .

There were no gritty games on the Mega Drive, unless you are comparing them to SNES games. SNES games with all their cutesy colours made Barney's Hide & Seek look gritty on the Mega Drive.

i think streets of rage tried but doesnt quite get there... IMO (hey im not always right...)

Actually that wasn't really gritty but did have a dark feeling to it despite the Disney affiliation.Quote:

Streets of Rage series. Number 3 has some 'gritty' moments. The music is gritty in the third aswell. Has a harsh, almost depressing tone to it with the thumping bass and drums in the hardcore-style tracks.
Terminator 2 : the arcade game ... I think ...
I liked Flashback. EVERYTHING wants to kill you, and you don't know why. It's all empty and lonely too.
Fatman Revenge of the thong, very shitty oh i mean gritty.
I can't think of any game that has the "gritty" atmosphere except for maybe Rise of the Dragon and Snatcher. Shadowrun on the SNES was gritty, so I assume it's gritty on the Genesis (haven't played it yet).
Streets of Rage series isn't really gritty, though it's comes somewhat close in comparisons to other Genesis titles.
Techno Cop
I think the image of gritty Genesis games comes from the time when they were released. Golden Axe, Ghouls'n'Ghosts, Phantasy Star 2, Forgotten Worlds,ROS, or just about any early release may not seem gritty compared to the crazy new stuff today (Bioshock or gears of war for example) but compared to most of the Nes games of the time they seem very dark. Standards have changed though I think most people don't see it this way anymore.
batman part 1 for genesis?.
Requiem for a Dream for Genesis? I don't consider those early Genesis games gritty. Gritty just couldn't be pulled off on consoles back then. Mothers Against Video Games would have a fit...
When I hear "Gritty Genesis Games", I think of Genny games with poor, bland, dark palettes and chunky, scratchy GEMS-esque music and sfx. Hmm..........perhaps you should take a look at most of Sega of America's action game efforts. "Batman Returns", "Chakan" or something like that.
