Random thoughts about ST:
Star Trek IV was alright, but looking back, I think it would have been better off as a made for TV reunion.
I really liked the Star Trek TNG / Dr. Who graphic novel.
As far as modern sci fi, I think they all go for that gritty dark look that was kicked off with the battlestar galactica remakes. Epic crisis with wild special effects. Heck, SW: TLJ is basically the BSG episode '33' with AT-ATs and the force.
What I like so much about Star Trek IV, is that originally I was all like "yay!, they're traveling to OUR time!" and now I'm watching it and saying "yay! they're traveling back to the awesome 80s!" so it still works.

Where I am at as a fan
Time travel is so cliche when it comes to science fiction and Trek was supposed to be different. Even though the crew came back to the 80's it didn't resonate in terms of the time as well as lets say a BTTF in 1955.Quote:

I mean, what more do you need from a movie? I'd totally watch those capeshit shit movies if they flew around the sun and catapulted themselves back to the awesome 80s. but that's just me.

Leonard Nimoy nailed the part as Spock, in the original series. All people that have played the part of a Vulkan, in the other series, have failed to reach the standards that he had established.

After really not liking any of Picard or Discovery that I'd seen, I nevertheless decided to give Strange New Worlds a go. I've been pleasantly surprised. It may not be the best Star Trek I've ever seen, but it's a far cry better than the other new shows. I would actually recommend it.
I'm so burned on modern Trek I just can't go back. The first episode of Orville Season 3 was excellent tho.
Yep! Orville is my show to get a good Star Trek experience.
I'm not a fan of new Star Trek, for me it died when Enterprise was cancelled. (and in the most hideous way too, with Riker pretty much telling us to suck it)
Been rewatching DS-9 lately, still holds up.
Enterprise was really good.
