Digital release? Yuck.
Maybe I need to finish SCU already.
I wish the remastered versions blurred the dithered/mesh parts of the graphics, like the pipes in Chemical Plant Zone. Could leave the rest of the graphs fine and just make those the transparent effect.
Maybe when someone like Limited Run makes a physical copy, I'll buy it.

What the fuck
Dude I saw this. It's like Sega is trying to read off EA's playbook. While this is hilarious the total lack of a physical copy of the game is a fucking hard pass.
Thanks Sega for making me realize I don't want to play Sonic in 16:9 that bad and am fine playing it now I have been for 30 years now, or even just on a raspberry pi.
Hyped asf. The DLC crap is a clusterfuck, but it's only $5, so about the same price as Mania's. Imma get it for PC digitally, and [If] they re-release the game as a physical edition, I'll buy it for the PS4.
That DLC chart is a disgrace. Can't wait to pay for the same games that I've paid for on Android, paid for on Sega Genesis & Mega Drive Classics Collection on PC, own on Genesis, owned on Saturn with Sonic Jam. Just make a freaking new 2D Sonic game already. Release Knuckles Chaotix. So dumb.
I'll wait until it gets on sale, especially for the Switch. For now, the classics on MD, CD on emulation and iPad and Mania on PS5 will fill "the void".
This really should have been a standalone release or Sonic 3 & Knuckles + Knuckles Chaotix remaster. The fact that it took ten years for the Android remakes to make it to PC is ridiculous, and then it is in this crappy package. I already own Mania and Sonic CD on PC, and Sonic 1 and 2 on Android. And all of them on Sega Mega Drive Collection. And I have a flashcart of Sonic 3 Complete. Who is this compilation really serving with this junk. Just make a new freaking game.
Let's be fair here. SEGA is releasing 4 30-year-old games they released on a thousand different systems for $50 plus DLC for 30-plus-year-old games and no true extras. TMNT is not only more games but games we have not seen re-released either at all and/or in many years plus extras like background and ONLINE MULTIPLAYER plus a PHYSICAL VERSION at a cheaper price.
I'm just happy (if done right) to get a physical copy of the original arcade game, plus the arcade version of Turtles in Time. Those 2 titles are easily worth $20 on their own.
Sonic CD has only been on a few specific systems since it's original release. The original release is only available via Sega CD, Windows 95, and GameCube. The rest are Whitehead's version, but hasn't been re-released in 10 years. So no, not released on a "thousand different systems." Having Sonic 3 and Knuckles on a compilation today is a big deal and the fact that it's getting the treatment like the first two games mean something. Actually, they'll probably be the definitive ways to play them since the special treatment was only on phones (Sonic CD for PS3/360/Steam). Let's be real; a phone is not the best way to play platformers and several other genres. I'm not trying to defend as I'm skeptical, but it's not all doom and gloom.
Definitely interested in Ninja Turtles, but most people are only going to play 3 or 4 of those games and that's it. Maybe 5. Konami collections are the bare minimum with modern day options, so let's not pretend the extras from them are worth praising outside of saving whenever. I have a bad feeling they are going to fuck up the multiplayer.
I would like to see a Chaotix remaster... but really what would be left in the end? The rubber band mechanic has to go. All of the 2D stages would have to be re-designed. The 3D sections would be on a new engine. At that point it becomes a reboot or a totally new game. I wish it would happen though. A modern take on Chaotix with a remastered soundtrack could be a big hit... with the dozens of us who enjoyed the original
I wasn't saying the TMNT collection was bad, I was just adding context. Those 4 Sonic games are using a custom made engine and have a shitton of new shit added to them. Regardless of how much demand or how long it's been, the TMNT collection is nothing more than roms thrown onto a disc. Not trying to upset anyone, just being grounded in my assessment.
It's more than just ROMs thrown on a disc. Digital Eclipse has to emulate the hardware that those games ran on (including NES and SNES) without having Nintendo knocking over the apple cart.
And SEGA is going to re-release Sonic a billion more times and overprice them every time. Seriously how many more times do you need to buy fucking Sonic of all games? No rush. Buy one of the other 8 billion ports of Sonic already out there. Probably the last time a TMNT release like this.
Overpriced every time? You're being ridiculous with the way you're acting. Getting the Whitehead type of treatment gives it a reason to stand out. Sonic CD getting a little bit of love after 10 years is fucking nice since it is barely on consoles. And 3 and Knuckles is getting the treatment that the first two had on phones. Some might call the definitive versions. I'm waiting for a price cut myself, but these aren't your typical ports. Nobody's dismissing Ninja Turtles, but it seems like the same vanilla type of compilation Konami has done over the last few years.
Some of us think that the nickel & dime purchases to get the complete package is pretty shitty. You’d think that simple things like an animated menu screen would just be part of your purchase. It’s like you’re paying for a suit and then being told that you have to purchase the pants separately.
It gets even better, because I’ve heard that SEGA is taking the other Sonic games down from digital store fronts.
Well maybe not removed entirely, but at least fix it so it doesn't ruin the game. Like have it so your partner follows you along normally the way Tails follows Sonic, then press a button to link rings in places where it makes sense. So you could have a high speed platformer with puzzle elements thrown in.
It's the levels though that really make it feel unfinished. Most of them feel empty and there's not enough variety. Considering the creativity that went into other Sonic installments the stage design in Chaotix is a major disappointment.
I actually quite liked the non-linear stages with their strange features.
LOL. I guess you and I have different tastes. I cannot stand the levels. They feel pointless. Botanic Base looks absolutely hideous, way worse than any other green colored level in a Sonic game, including the 8-bit versions. Amazing Arena was the only one that sort of looked decent at first, then you hit the switch and it goes right back to the garish palette and flashing objects like all the others.
I don't understand what went wrong. The stages in S3+K are so much better. Chaotix hardly even takes advantage of the 32X features in the 2D stages, where are the extra layers of parallax, why is it still using dithering and flickering for transparency? I think SoA threw it together in about two months because it was obvious the 32X was failing and they needed to get software out the door before it died completely. They used the rubber band mechanic from Sonic Crackers not because it was a good idea, but because it was already available and sped up development time.
There were some neat effects, like the powerups that stretch and squeeze the sprites. On a technical level, there isn't a lot that the Genesis couldn't do by itself I guess, apart from the 3D stages (which were what I assume the milder parts of hell are like) and the final boss. The same can be said about Astal on the Saturn, maybe even more so.
Chaotix wasn't made by SoA in any case. It was made by a small team in Japan, that also worked on Sonic CD if I remember correctly (which I also love). It grew out of the Sonic Crackers prototype. The day/night cycle was neat, as was the interesting random stage selection.
Did you get the 100% ending? It was a fun little game, but Sonic CD is my favorite of the classic Sonics. S3+K is even with or below Chaotix for me, they're very different. I was also able to develop the muscle memory to pick the characters I wanted from the "random" selector every time, so I never ended up shackled to Bomb or Heavy which may have influenced my perspective.
What I remember most distinctively from Chaotix was the theme of "exploration," which was unusual at the time. CD was similar if you try to get the real ending.
I can't believe you put S3+K below Chaotix but hey to each their own...
Yes I 100% completed it, I had the most fun in the 3D special stages. True they are primitive but they're at least something we hadn't seen before in a Sonic game. I thought the final boss was using a Genesis layer but I could be wrong. I agree the day/night stuff was cool. Plus there's the music. So among 32X games it's still in my top 5.
I hated the combi catcher for selecting a partner. Do you ever notice that in most games, if you want to pick a character you just select them from the menu? Why did that need to be a minigame with two useless characters? I guess Heavy could be used during boss fights but it's still a boring character and Bomb has no redeeming value at all. What kind of idiot would attach themselves to a bomb anyway, are the characters suicidal? If you're going to have some random robot on a leash why not make it useful, think like the chain chomp from Mario or something that can at least attack enemies and pick up rings.
I didn't even realize it was SoJ who put this together, they must have really been drinking some good sake over there to think this was a good idea.
My god. It got confirmed they have removed the Sonic 3 tracks MJ made/his team contributed to, so they are using the proto tracks. They got Jun Senoue back to "remaster" them, and JFC, just watch this:

Also there's this playthrough video which shows it in action:

I've lost hype for this now. Gonna pick it up in a few weeks for PC only when the modding community gets their hands on fixing this shit up.
How did Jue Senoue manage to make the final music in Sonic Origins sound WORSE than the prototype mixes? And the new Super Sonic music sounds like a remix of the Sonic & Knuckles invincibility music...meh. They replaced the Competition Screen music as well, but the competition zones are now full-sized instead of bite-sized like in the original game. They also put in the prototype ending music in Sonic 3 when Sonic descends with the Master Emerald. The only decent track in the whole bunch in my view. The "new" replacements are not good melodically. But they didn't put in the prototype Sonic 3 credits medley because it of course had mixes of the MJ music. Just have the Sonic & Knuckles Credits medley. Biggest irony of them all? They didn't even eliminate Brad Buxer, Bobby Brooks, Scirocco Jones, Geoff Grace, Doug Grigsby III, Daryl Ross from the final credits of the game!
I am convinced this game would have never even been released if that prototype hadn't been released with the replacement tracks.
Total so fucking hard pass for me.
I've got original copies of Sonic 3 and Knuckles as well as Sonic 3 Complete repro cart for Genesis, I'm sure this will spike the price.
Wow, some people are so rigidly stuck in the '90s it's absurd. Want to play Sonic 3 original? Pop the cartridge into your Genesis.
I'm looking forward to Jun's remasters.

Solution? Still, not buying it. Also, complaining about people being stuck in the nineties, on this site? It is to laugh.
Oh I agree, there is laughing.
The replaced music I pretty much expected, but what I find more annoying are the other aspects they got wrong. For example the Special Stage music no longer speeds up as the game speeds up, and when you get the last blue sphere, it just abruptly cuts off.

Even Sonic Jam got this right (25:25 mark):

That is a good question. If anything, the guy certainly knows how to cock up a tune, which is odd, as he did some bangers back during the 16-bit days.
Getting the feeling this is classic SEGA rushing out an unfinished product. Stealth and the gang wouldn't have released it like this if they had they say so, imo.

I'm extremely proud of my team for their performance under such pressure, but every one of us is very unhappy about the state of Origins and even the Sonic 3 component. We weren't too thrilled about its pre-submission state either but a lot was beyond our control.
We asked to do major fixes near submission but weren't allowed due to submission and approval rules. We asked about delays early and repeatedly but were told they weren't possible. We offered to come back for post-release fixes and updates- we do not yet know if this is happening
