I sold my modded Genesis Mini because the input lag on it frankly was terrible compared to the original hardware, and went out and bought an original Genesis. But it is very nice to see these games all get rereleased. Very cool to see the unreleased Fantasy Zone port to the Genesis end up on this as well!
I mean yeah ok cool. If Sega brings to the U.S. I'd be fine with it but some of those Sega CD games probably won't make it. idk if Working Designs even holds the rights to Popful Mail anymore.
I had heard this was coming but didn't expect to see Fantasy Zone or the Sega CD titles. The article mentions there's going to be a mini 32X too? Does this mean they might finally acknowledge Knuckles Chaotix?
There's no 32X support. It's a cosmetic attachment.
Currently known games:
- Silpheed (Mega CD)
- Shining Force CD (Mega CD)
- Sonic CD (Mega CD)
- Mansion of Hidden Souls (Mega CD)
- Popful Mail (Mega CD)
- Virtua Racing (Mega Drive)
- Bonanza Bros (Mega Drive)
- Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive)
- Thunder Force IV (Mega Drive)
- Magical Taruruto (Mega Drive)
- Fantasy Zone (new Mega Drive port)
Well this is a pleasant surprise. I know everyone was secretly hoping for a Dreamcast Mini, but the addition of Sega CD games and some of the more notable missing Genesis titles makes this a tempting buy for me. I would really love to see some 32X games as well.
Ranger X please
Can't wait, hope they get Lunar 2 makes the end cut.
Thunder Force IV!
It's going to be weird if S3&K doesn't end up in there, at least put the PC soundtrack version on it. If there's a western version of this, my guess is games like Magical Taruruto will be swapped out
Heard about this yesterday. Really surprised they are throwing CD games in. Long shot hoping they throw in the cancelled Phantasy Star 4 in there, even if it's not translated and in a very rough form.Near zero chance of that, I know.
Games I'd like to see on it tho if it gets a Western release:
- Sonic 3 & Knuckles
- NBA Jam '97
- Zero Tolerance
- Snatcher
- Sol Feace
- Mickey Mania
- Columns 3
- Comix Zone
- The Ooze
- The Second Samurai
I'll be blown away if they include Snatcher on this thing.
I'm not sure if this will come to the U.S. These mini consoles here in the States are designed for casual gamers itching for a retro fix, and the first Genesis mini already has the most well known Genesis games. Selling this as a "Genesis Mini 2" won't make sense to most consumers, and most probably won't even recognize that there were numerous redesigns of the Genesis.
Right now, this would be like Nintendo releasing an NES mini 2 with no Mario or Zelda games as those were already on the first.
Maybe this could come to the U.S. in a way that the TG-16 mini did - by mail order only. The TG-16 was certainly the most hardcore mini console and likely wouldn't have sold very well at retail.
Of course, if Sega can get Sonic 3 and/or Knuckles, and possibly Outrun on this mini, those games could be shown on the box cover and would be recognizable to more than just hardcore Sega fans.
Okunari has already said they're planning to release it in the US. Sales of the first Genesis Mini were higher in the US than elsewhere. Due to chip shortage issues, they're not sure when the actual release will occur, and they probably still have a lot to figure out with licensing and game selection.
But as you say, I can see this being restricted to online only. I think they might have had an excess inventory problem with the Genesis Mini. I seem to recall it being sold for half the original sale price at one point.
Famitsu also just announced that 20 of the 50+ games will be Mega CD games.
https://www.famitsu.com/news/202206/03263208.html
In that interview, Okunari also says they're NOT including any 32X games. "If we could easily emulate the 32X's two CPUs, then we could just go ahead and release a Saturn Mini."
Thanks for the partial translation Gryson. 50+ games, 20+ being SEGA CD will probably be an All-Star lineup honestly. What Genesis first party stuff is left for Sega to release that wasnt already on the Genesis Mini 1?
Some candidates for other great Sega CD games not already announced if there will be 15 more alongside the five already announced:
Vay
Keio Flying Squadron
Snatcher
Road Avenger
Sol Feace
Lunar Silver Star Story
Lunar II Eternal Blue
Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side
Final Fight CD
Earthworm Jim: Special Edition
Samurai Shodown
Flashback
And how about some of these Genesis games:
Quackshot
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Ronald McDonald's Treasureland Adventure
Revenge of Shinobi
Shining Force II
Shadow Dancer
Rocket Knight Adventures
Dynamite Headdy
General Chaos
Strider
Alisia Dragoon
Panorama Cotton
So 8 or 16 gb of internal storage ? How are CD saves going to work, when on the original Mini they were complete snapshots of the game (ie a 4mb rom would take 16mb of additional space if 4 saves were used) ?
EDIT: on that interview it says you'll be able to choose between MD 1 & 2 sound
20 out of 50 is honestly more than I was expecting, that's pretty exciting. I also can't say I'm too surprised about 32X. I'm curious if they will release some titles that were previously region locked on the original Mini. I personally found that rather frustrating, there was something like 60 games altogether but only 40 were playable on any system.
Some titles I'd like to see:
- Sonic 3 & Knuckles (I'm worried the music licensing issues in Origins will also cause this to not happen)
- Alien Soldier (Good chance)
- Shining Force II (Good chance)
- Revenge of Shinobi (Unlikely, since Japan got it)
- Battle Mania 2 (One can only dream)
- TMNT: Hyperstone Heist (Probably unlikely, but with the TMNT collection coming out, maybe possible)
- Another World or Heart of the Alien on Sega CD (Probably unlikely, but who knows)
- Snatcher (I have no idea how likely this is)
- Streets of Rage 1 & 3 (Good chance)
- Phantasy Star II & III (Good chance)
- Ranger-X (Good chance)
- Xeno Crisis (Absolutely 0% chance, but it would be cool)
Wasn't Comix Zone available in the first one?
Ristar is still one game I'm shock wasn't in the 1st mini, hopefully it gets a spot this time.
I wouldn't bet on anything that isn't owned, lock, stock and barrel by Sega. IP rights issues are a nightmare on these things.
Alright ladies, we got more games announced for the Mini 2, here they are.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKECOcQfEWs
Way to take the wind out of the sails, first 11 games were amazing and then the next 11, most of these games are worthless in 2022. Lame ports of Outrun and After Burner II, Columns III, Nadia Secret of Blue Water and some other weird Japan only puzzle games? Starblade is a good addition but that's it. Where are any of the following:
Vectorman 2
Ecco the Dolphin: Tides of Time
Revenge of Shinobi (Was this on the JP Genesis Mini?)
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Quackshot
Aladdin
Rocket Knight Adventures
Streets of Rage 3
Golden Axe II
Shining Force II
Chakan
Outrunners
Alien Soldier
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist
Sonic 3D Blast
Comix Zone
The Ooze
Ristar
Mickey & Minnie in the Great Circus Mystery
Final Fight CD
Sol-Feace
Lunar: Silver Star Story
Lunar: Eternal Blue
Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side
Keio Flying Squadron
Vay
Snatcher
Road Avenger
what the heck is Star Mobile ? New game ? Unreleased BITD ?
EDIT: https://www.reddit.com/r/SEGAGENESIS...e_called_star/
PC Engine CD port... not sure if it was planned for release back then, not listed on unreleased/cancelled games lists
EDIT2: developed in 1992, and also released on the X68000

AB 2 was hardly a lame port, but a fantastic port of the Arcade game, a fantastic early title for the MD . I didn't like the Outrun port much myself, but it's a hell of a lot better than OutRunners on the MD IMO. Night Striker and Ninja Warriors are awesome on the Mega-CD! worth it alone, for the soundtracks. Given this is the Japanese Mini, I would it expect it to have some quirky Japanese only stuff on it. Given rights issues, can't see SEGA getting any of the Disney stuff and also given Konami is doing a Turltes collection, you can forget about Turtles.
Still, it's only half the games. I'm hoping some of the CORE stuff to be on there, along with one of the Lunar's.
I see Sega had to perform surgery on Outrun again. I wonder if Ferrari made them alter the car or if Sega proactively did it to avoid any future issues with Ferrari.
Why is rights an issue on the Disney stuff if Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion were on the Genesis Mini 1? I'll agree Outrunners is trash as a Genesis port. I would love to see a rerelease or port of the arcade game, the fact that that never made it to the Saturn is a tragedy.
Maybe there will be a totally different game lineup when this gets announced for the United States.
Just because of the way modern Dinsey/Lucas/Marvel acts over IP , we may get one or not. I love to see real Arcade ports, but it seems SEGA is looking to use MD code for both its and Tatio ports
It's not a bad list at all at the mo moment, just like to see Soulstar, Lunar , Starflight on there , but they're out of SEGA hands, so just have to see
Either this thing will be Japan exclusive or the international version will feature a wildly different list of games.
Where to even begin? Aladdin was co-developed by Virgin Games, so you'd have to license it from them as well as Disney. Disney also re-released Aladdin in 2019 with the Disney Classic Games Collection, and that probably introduces all sorts of complications with co-publisher Nighthawk Interactive. Why would Disney want to compete with their own product by allowing Sega to publish Aladdin on the MD Mini 2 for what would likely be pennies?
Some people have far too unrealistic expectations for what games can be included on these mini consoles. Sega's Okunari has talked extensively about this. Basically, it's near-impossible to even get rights holders to come to the table on 30-year-old games like this.
I should also point out that quite a few of the titles you listed were already released on the MD Mini.
Sega is releasing a replica Cyber Stick to play the Mega Drive mini games which support analog controls.
https://www.eurogamer.net/sega-revea...-stick-replica
It's roughly the price that you can buy a real Cyber Stick for now.
It'll likely be smaller than a real Cyber Stick, which is already smaller than it looks in pictures. You'll need to strap it down in order to use it.
pleaſe pleaſe pleaſe finally give us a Snatcher US re-releaſe!
Cyber stick link for those interested in pre-ordering:
https://amzn.asia/d/5ZlM4si
The US version is up for pre order. I'm not seeing the fake CD attachment thingy like they got in Japan for it yet tho. I'm fine with not getting that. Part of the appeal to me of mini consoles is that they don't take up much space, so I don't need that extra plastic.
So far:
Sonic CD, Shining Force CD, Silpheed, Mansion of Hidden Souls, Night Striker, Ninja Warriors, After Burner 2, Outrun, Outrunners, Virtua Racing, Hang On, Sonic 3D Blast, Shining in the Darkness, Vector Man 2, the Ooze, Bonanza Bros, Alien Soldier, Rainbow Islands extra, Splatter house 2, Rolling Thunder 2, Lightening Force, Fantasy Zone, Star Mobile.
So (without fiddling w adapters) the Cyber Stick should work as well with the Genesis mini 1, the Astro City mini, Astro City mini V, Taito Egret 2 mini (any others I'm forgetting?). Are there any other games on those other systems that might work well with the Cyber Stick?
I don't see Star Blade on the Genesis mini 2 games list. That's a little concerning for anyone who ordered the stick but got the US mini instead of the jap one bc that just leaves 2 compatible games (so far anyway) of Night Striker and Afterburner 2.
Musha would be cool if it could work but I think it's analog is a bit twitchy and I'm not sure if you can adjust sensitivity on the Cyber Stick. Even tho afterburner 3 is a bit of a dog I'd still like to see it on there since it's compatible with analog controls. Ayrton Senna's GP 2 would be a welcome addition as well, or hell even Galaxy Force 2 since that is also compatible.
Do I know how to call them or what? Let's see how many others on this list are announced for the US version.
https://sega.jp/genesismini2/
I'm happy to see Shining Force CD on that list.
The 2 Lunar's now make it a must have #GameArts
The Working Designs translations, the four Sega CD titles they published, have not been announced for the the U.S. version of the Sega Genesis Mini 2. If you have been keeping up with the news on this console, Popful Mail, published by Nihon Falcom in Japan was announced at launch for the Japanese console. Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue, published by Game Arts in Japan, have recently also been added to the lineup for the Japanese console.
Now, while I understand the omissions of games like 'Majandojo' and 'Harimanada' from the US release - it would appear that Working Designs, or whoever owns the IP of Working Designs (in this case, I assume it is still Victor Ireland, unless I am mistaken) is actively preventing the re-publication of these exceedingly rare experiences in the U.S. It is at this point to Working Designs' discredit that these games have not been put together into one complete package - and I used to believe that was maybe due to bad blood between Game Arts and Nihon Falcom, but now that does not appear to be the case.
The U.S. console was just announced, and more games have been revealed for the Japanese console than the U.S., but already no inclusion of Popful Mail is a huge red flag that Working Designs does not want to be a part of this project, and does not wish to see these games released in the future.
Also - while Victor used to be an active forum poster on the forum for his new game company - Gaijenworks - he has not been active in quite some time. Please tell me we are going to get remakes of the Working Designs Sega CD (OR SATURN?!?) games someday...
With roughly 30+ games to still be announced, anything is possible but it would be a real shame if the big 5 of the SEGA CD dont make it on here. Seems like all of these dubbed RPGs have serious rights issues that probably prevent their release if all of the actors need to be repaid.
