I honestly saw it coming from a mile.
Notice the player reviews are higher.
Yeah, if there's ever a game to completely ignore critics' thoughts on, it would be NiGHTS. It's not 'for' them.
All the Sega fans are loving this, from what I've heard, and that's good enough for me.
Now I just need a Wii. :|
Looks like they should have just let the original dream continue...
Has anyone here actualy played it yet?
Ehh from what I read in the reviews they keep saying something to the extent that its "painfully faithful to the original." Screw writers you can't win. If this new NiGHTS was a real progession and evolution from the original people would be pissed because it "was too much of a departure from the original." If it's really similar to the original people would still be pissed because "it's the same thing as the original."
I say when it comes out rent it and give a try and form your own opinion. When a game like this comes out there is almost no winning and almost nothing constructive you can get out of the reviews except maybe graphics.
I'm picking up my preorder today, if I can get the money together.

Like Sonic, somebody will get pissed off about the results, so I'd guess that it's a better bet not to piss off the people with the most money. I still won't see the game till next month though; nice to see the Wii's release schedule holding up over here. ([edit] AD2101 hit it on the head I guess)
Any game that makes you replay the ENTIRE CHAPTER if you die on a boss and sit through UNSKIPPABLE CUT SCENES each time deserves mediocre reviews AT BEST! That's what I got out of the reviews. There is NO WAY I could ever appreciate those severe flaws.
Wii is far from my favorite console.
It would've gotten average reviews no matter how good it turned out.
Although, unskippable cutscenes does sound really lame.
I didn't really care for the original "Nights" myself.
Unskippable cut scenes only suck when you want to replay a game.
Or die on a boss. Imagine if Sonic on the Genesis had unskippable cut scenes and you died on a fight with Robotnik at the end of one of the levels. You get sent back to Zone 1 of that stage and need to watch all of the cutscenes again!
I agree with Rusty Venture... the original Nights is quite overrated.
Well, I got it last night and played it.
And I like it! It's not the best game i've played this year, but it's enjoyable. btw, i've never played the original. The unskippable cutscenes are annoying, and I hate Owl, but once I have time to really sit down and play it for a good while, it'll pretty much be one of my favorites in my personal Wii lineup.
I'm sure I'll enjoy the game, but I really wish out of all the dead Sega franchises out there they decide to revive something other then NiGHTS. Don't get me wrong, the original was a great game, but very very overrated.
Not only that but plenty of the design choices I've seen piss me off.
I think I've played Christmas NiGHTS more than the original, just because it's easier to play for a short period of time.
Also, holiday tradition.
Yeah everyone seems to pop a boner over this game like it is the greatest thing to come out of the 32-bit generation and all it is is collecting shit and flying in loops.Quote:

I think a fundamental problem with NiGHTS was the fact it was never self explanatory, If I had a dollar for every person I've seen fire it up and fly around aimlessly for 10 minuets, before turning it off I would be a rich man.
You have to ask yourself weather you dislike the game itself or the horrible retro scene hype that has buit up arround it.
The ammusing thing about NiGHTS is that back in the day, in the UK at least it really was underrated, I barely knew anyone else that had played it.
It's far from my favorite Saturn title, but it is a good solid title and plays very well.
The FACT is that when NiGHTS was released on the Saturn it was a totally original game idea (how many of those do we see today?) with rich environments, great controls and for a 1996 console title is was graphically very good.
The biggest problem here is that 80% of people who have played NiGHTS discovered it during the retro boom, 10+ years after it's release.
People come into NiGHTS expect FAR too much, rating it and drawing comparissons with current day as opposed to 1996.
Shigeru Miyamoto said if there was one game he wish he did, it was NiGHTS. Listen to Shigeru. He is always right, knows best, is the best game developer ever and everybody loves him.
I bought Nights on day 1 of its release with the ANALog pad. It just isn't a very fun game. Although I don't classify any Sonic games as "great", either. Maybe the first one, though I think that is a bit shy of "great". To be honest, I don't think the analog pad did much for Nights. It was a shitty pad (though still better than the gawdawful DC controller). Nights isn't a game which really needs analog controls since it is rail based unless you're walking around as one of the dipshit children. Nam 1975 would benefit more from analog controls than Nights did, and it wouldn't.
Conclusion: Nights is OK at best. Super Mario 64 is better. Super Mario World is better. Test Drive Le Mans 24 Hours is better. Blaster Master is better.
serious i like the colors in nights but i cant really play it,BTW DC controller isn't god awfll, its only big but i maybe can own Street fighter 3rd strike on that system with parrys etc on the hardest level(maybe i could) and Kof 2000 etc played and looked tons better then on ps2 no wash look.N64+mario party, thats pain.
Never got the problem with the DC controller. Maybe it's because I'm not a hardcore enough 2D fighter fan to care about the button arrangement, and I found the facebutton/stick FPS controls to be more familiar to me as a keyboard/mouse gamer.

I really liked the origional Nights, I didn't at first though, as there is lots of level memorization, but once you get good its pretty awesome. When you can draw crazy patterns when your charged up or whatev is tight. My friend is much better than I am at it though. Its a really crazy game if you get ripped before playing it. I really wanted the sequel to come out on the dreamcast, I think it would have been a great game for that platform, but now on the wii, I guess you can do the whole motion control thing, but I just think they waited so long to release a sequel that I no longer care. I'd play it for sure and probably like it if I had a wii, I just don't have an interest in too many of these new games. I do agree that there is a lot of hype around the origional being one of the best games ever, mainly because some Nights fanatics claim that its a super masterpeice work of art. I don't say its one of the best games ever, just a nice origional (for the time) game that makes me feel Like im gonna have a seizure playing it sometimes. Damn thats a lot of run on sentences! Plus if it came out on dreamcast I could have used my fishing controller for the wii affect anyway! In your face wii!! Got nuthin on my dreamcast son, WHAT?!!!
I think it looks very over rated too. I mean it seems like a great game, but not one of the best ever. The whole theme of it is also kind of queer and 'uncool'. It's a non-gender specific jester that flies around in children's dreams collecting balls and going through rings... It certainly doesn't compare to the Sonic games at the time.
And Joe, do you just hate good games in general and prefer bad ones?
Liking Mario 64 with that controller yet hating the DC one... right. Just holding a N64 controller with normal non-child hands is like trying to fit your penis in your ear.
I don't get why so many people hate on NiGHTS. It has the deepest replay value of any game I've ever played. I've always found the A-life system to be really impressive and it doesn't get enough credit. It's definitely the kind of game that you don't necessarily "get" right away, and I'm sure that puts off a lot of people.
Also, I don't get how a game that has received mixed opinions since its conception could possibly be classed as overrated. It has a strong fanbase, but it's far from being one of the highest rated games of all time. Just because you don't like a game and there are people out there who do, doesn't mean "overrated" is an accurate description. I strongly dislike Super Thunder Blade, but I wouldn't call it "overrated" even though it got a 10/10 on Sega-16.com.
Kogen, first you say that the game doesn't look great, and then ask if I hate good games? Weird. I apologize if I don't like mediocrity, but Nights really isn't all that great. I've played worse games, but Nights is pretty uneventful. I have no clue what all of this "A-life" talk is. There is no mention of it in the instruction manual nor the game itself. You just fly around like a dumbass in a super rush trying to get the best time/highest score. THAT'S IT! It's just not exciting and/or very fun.
As for being overrated, the lowest the game has received on GameFAQS is a 7.
I still believe that N64 controller was designed with children's hands in mind. If I was half the age I was when it came out I'd probably have a totally different opinion about it.Quote:

What's this got to do with anything? I can look back on a lot of games, and they're still as dull and confusing as they were 'back in the day'. NiGHTS is a great idea for a game, but it pulls it off in a really weird fashion; most of the plot is explained in the manual - there's no sense of story progression at all in-game, so people playing CD-R copies (let's be reasonable here) are likely to wonder what the fuck they're playing.Quote:

Joe, did you actually read what I said? I said it's over rated, but still looks a great game. I just mean it isn't what I'd consider one of the best games ever made like many people do. You also said Sonic games weren't that good either, so I'm only left to assume you don't like good games since they're good.
Now you've mentioned you hate arcade-like games and they're stupid/not fun. This is fine except that's the type of game SEGA specialises in and this site is called "SEGA-16".
And wait... Super Thunder Blade - one of the worst SEGA-made games on the Genesis - got a perfect score. What? I won't even try to understand that. It deserves a 1.
Also about NiGHTS, the game is over rated by the fans. They act as if it's the most Godly thing ever created(like FF7 fans) when it just isn't. This doesn't mean it's not a great game, it's just no one should realisticly except absolutely everything about it to be perfect and beyond.
Yes, you haven't even played it, but you criticize other people's comments about it? Nice.Quote:

I'm not trying to sound like a patronising twat, but discovering a game, indeed any game 10, 20 even 30 years after it's release is going to provide you with a totally different experience, oppinions and comparissons than buying and playing it when it was released!
It's the same as having a veteran and a historian, whilst a historian will be in possesion of more 'facts' and current day knowledge about an event, the veteran has the advantage of having been there and seen events first hand.
This isnt a big dick contest, and im not trying to say "oh my oppinion is better because I was part of the 'scene' when the game was released" because that's bullshit! but it does give anyone in that position a totally different perspective on the game in question.
Your hardcore enough to actually just dont complaint about it,there's just not enough wrong with to complain.Just to make it simple JOE we are on a sega site with dedicated sega fans and sega megadrive reviews and thread etc enough to keep you awake.Without a genesis there would'nt be a DC without a SMS there would be no MD/genesis without a genesis there would be no GG and no saturn (32Multiganger and his friend Raper CD) without a DC there would be no genesis, without no DC there would be no sega cause they made it anyway you get what i mean its a whole visa versa story.Anyhow how can you praise the genesis so high and say aww my thumb hurts while i am holding the big one of the sega DC,dude their all family you accepted the genesis so you automaticly have to except the dc at any cost or else sega wont let you in.What you say about the DC controller is like saying its Paris hilten only i hate her nose its gawd awfull never want to do anything with her not even when she could be drunk and tame as hell.Quote:

My opinion of the game doesn't have anything to do with the way the game looks or what game systems came after it. The two newest game systems I have are a DC and Xbox and both I got after I got a Saturn and played Nights.Quote:

Actually I have played it, though the emulator was too choppy to really judge it. I've also played the GBA game which was a lot of fun, although very short. But really, I don't care to argue about it. Let's just say NiGHTS sucks and Sonic is only average; then we can all play Super Thunder Blade with our N64 controllers.
Trivia: Yuki Naka did Super Thunderblade. It is perhaps the worst game he's ever worked on.
"They said what about Nights?!!!!!" Goddam it who wants to fight, Joe you want some, I'll teach you something, Ary you talkin bout nights too, I'll smoke you! I'll forum fight you right now, i aint skerred! Nights is Boutey Boutey son!! God I love it when people get pissed over the internet, hilarious! Joe doesn't like nights, who cares, he also doesn't like sonic which is lunacy but i respect his opinion (even though its wrong! Hah!). Ary that shits priceless! 32 multiGanger and his friend raper cd! ROFLMAO! ...Oh wait, you talkin bout thunder blade now..Its fuckin on now suckas!
