They don't make games like they used to, modern consoles are all about 3D, FPS games that last 40 hours and so on. So if you want to play quality simple 2D games that don't sap up all your spare time then retro is the way to go. Price is also a factor, why would I want to spend £40 on a new game on release day, when I can get a big pile of retro games at a couple of quid each instead.
What makes retro gaming different from current gaming, besides the technologies involved? They're games, and I like to play them :)
Would you say that newer games rely more on graphics and less on gameplay?Quote:

Games are often too long, I prefer a short game thats fun all the way through, rather than a game padded out to 40 hours thats full of dull levels.
I agree, that they're a little padded, but there are still some good games. I think some of the old genesis games were more quality than quantity though. Vectorman is what, less than 20 levels?
Bingo... kind of. Actually it's not the length that really bothers me, it's that most games these days tale grain pains to have an ongoing narrative. Every single stage needs an elaborate setup. This is fine for RPGs and the such, but otherwise it means that the game cannot be a "pick up and play" game. I like playing games in short bursts and only occasionally for a long time with a single game during a single session. I don't mind there being a background story in games, but most games these days try to be movies. That's probably why racing games are my favorites for the current and previous generation.Quote:

They recently released a 3D platformer game. It's pretty obscure. It's called something like "Super Mario Galaxy" or something really similar. You might have to do some work since so few copies were released, but you might be able to track one down. ;)
Uggghhhh but it's Maaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrriooooooooo
I'm into it because of the nostalgia. I grew up playing NHLPA 93, Toejam & Earl, and Sonic 3 before the bus came everyday and playing my Genesis brings back those good memories.
I'm in the same boat there. Genesis takes me back to my childhood like nothing else can. If I could get back the hours I spent playing Street Fighter II, I could probably develop a cure for cancer.
Reminds me of my the years 1990 to 1994.
I have an example here -Quote:

I sorta got stuck in 94 or so. After playing Lunar I and II and Snatcher I had lots of trouble moving on. Sorta like an ex girlfriend someone can't get over. I looked at analog controllers and 3d with disdain for years but I have come to realize their is still room for innovation. really the main problem I had was it was just so damn ugly. Games have become much more complicated as well. I agree the opening and tutorials are down right obnoxious. I tried showing my wife Okami on Ps2 and the opening/tutorial lasted like 20 minutes. Its why love shooters. I can just pick them up and play. On the flip side I love rpgs when I have the time I just usually don't :(
Current games focus too much on eye candy and less on the fun factor. Also there is diminishing returns with the new systems, now most of the time the CPU is sitting idle even in the previous generation (GameCube, PS2, X-Box) and the biggest advantage in this generation is only higher resolutions while the extra processing power mostly goes to waste (especially with the PS3). Also eye candy is no longer a big deal due to video game technology being mature.
Then there is the fact I already have a large library of older titles.

Lots of different things, nostalgia, discovering the gems I missed and as one guy once put it nicely, "I feel like I'm fulfilling my childhood dream." Remember browsing SOFTWARE ETC. circa 1994 thinking "Man, so many games I wanna play and own, but doubt I ever will."
Well, for most of us, that dream is now reality.
Plus I prefer 2D, and these games don't require you to exactly set aside an entire afternoon for in order to enjoy. Just press start and enjoy, if not, then there's always another game waiting for ya ;)
reminds me of the time i was a kid
there where no saves no checkpoints
yust work your way to the end boss to see the end screen
but like alex the kid in miracle world and other games on the sms it was ablack page with thank you for playing and then your high score
games today are to easy and i still like 2d platform games disney games
they are fun
Well, the main reason for me is nostalgia. But nostalgia aside, I really like the tite gameplay that lots of 2d games had in mid eighties to and peaking in late nineties. They can be picked up easy without too much training, but to master the controls and the timing and the patterns, thats gaming, and its something that developers forgot about with the early 3d games at least. I find I like a nice hand drawn 2d plain better than the most detailed 3d world. Its like the power of sequential art in comic books versus full motion animation or movies. What they don't show you in between panels in comics your mind creates, and its usually more pleasing to you than what they would show you anyway. Nothing can rival imagination. With these new games they think they have to show you all these flashy grafix, but I find I get pulled into simple 2d games way more, and with new games all I see is the flaws that seperate it from the reality they strive to create. The gameplay is great in old games, and I love 2d animation. New games are too complicated for their own good. And when you really get down to it SEGA genesis games are just hardcore, where as ps3 and xbox games are weak and bitch made. I don't hate everything 3d, sports games for instance, and a lot of dreamcast games, and im not saying that 3d games shouldn't be made, I just wish 3d hadn't muscled out 2d to the extent that they did. Todays gamers don't know anything about old games, they just see the graphix and think how bad the game must be, and how much better their next gen games are, but in terms of hardcore fun crazt games, nuthin can fuck with sega.
Main reason I'm a retro gamer, is because all the 14.5 years I've messed with FC, MD and SMS. New PC games are not much fun... some older ones are pretty nice. DC has nice games... soon i'll see what Saturn has to offer.
Some of the reason for me is nostalgia, but mostly its originality in these old games that keep me hooked. It seems (at least to me) that games from back when were more original. Sure, they weren't in 3D and were limited in colors and sprites, but I think those shortcomings forced designers to get more creative with how they made their games play. I guess what Im trying to say is that when you compare modern games with retro games, retro games did more with less. Every new big release seems to be a FPS and while thats awesome for some, I wish they're was more diversity.
Also the "pick up and play" factor is huge when playing with friends. It sucks having to have a whole button layout explained to you 10 times while you get your ass handed to you in Resistance, while playing Sonic its as easy as saying "Every button is jump".
3D games are generally boring and ugly. The end.
I agree with Elusive, games are games they can be fun or not but age doesn't affect that many games. My Mega Drive sits right next to my XBOX 360 above my other consoles (like kings) and while i enjoy running around with Sonic or Rocket Knight Adventures i love getting gruesome headshots in Gears Of War and GTA: San Andreas.
Another thing is games based on movies and TV now are really half-ass were back in the 16-bit era far more were at least mediocre and a few were actually good, just look at the Disney licenced games done by Capcom or the WB licenced games by Konami while today games from TV and movies are simply shovelware.Quote:

It was a better way of doing things, as the developers would have to make a game as good as they could because they were competing with other developers making a game on the same license at the same time.
Batman Returns is a fun example, theres games for Megadrive, Master System, Lynx, Amiga, PC and Snes, and they're all totally different!
On the other hand, look at the not-Sonic furry platformers. Awesome Possum, Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, Aero the Acro-bat, Bubsy Bobcat.Quote:

Oh, come on. Grow up. Even Sonic would say "That is NO good!". to your post . If you liked Alex Kidd, you'll like Mario. Heck, if you like SONIC you should like Mario. Sonic has learned to make peace with the release of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, why can't you? Also, Sonic and the Secret Rings, anyone?Quote:

If a movie, like E.T released over 20 years ago can still be watched and enjoyed, why can't a game, say, Sonic 3 and Knuckles released about 16 years ago, be played and enjoyed too?
That is why I retro game: Because it's fun!

Actualy,Dirt Ball Gamer,(What a fitting name.) we ALL know George cheated in the election...
It's not really worth badmouthing Bush as there isn't anyone on here who actually likes him.
I blame the electoral college.
I blame the Commies, Bush, and Tom Cruise.
The only thing worse then the pinko Commies is Tom Cruise.
Thats hilarious as I do actually keep one in my coat pocket. Its been in there for a couple weeks as I stole it from work and never remember to take it out, but it doesn't say mario unfortuanatly.. And no I don't like Bush or republicans, or most americans in general. And I may be a dirtball, but at least im not 17, your generation I feel bad for. Nothing cool has happened since youve been more than an infant. Not hating on you for being young as age is just a number, I just think it would suck. But whatever im sure the generation before me probably thinks the same about me so.Quote:

When I was younger I didn't have many friends and spent most my time on games. In my opinion when Dreamcast's era ended so did gaming - I can't get into the new generations like I used to for the 8/16/32 generations (dreamcast included). I don't find myself looking forward to new games anymore or thurougly enjoying a single game like I used to back in the day.
I remember the first time I played through Streets of Rage 2 and its kick ass soundtrack - yeah games now a days don't give me the "sweet" feeling I used to get.
