Playing as Tails is even more annoying as player 2 because he´s slower than Sonic and keeps getting off-screen.
Talis is nice sometimes (grabs few extra rings) but not always... for example in Sonic3 there's one part in Carnival zone where you have to jump on a silinder thing and go underneath it to get through Talis fucks up everything, I always plug in the 2nd controller then and put piece of paper to d-pad so Tails would look always up and won't bother me anymore.
Hell I just don't have tails anywhere in my game on Sonic 3. But yea Tails is really just an annoying character in general.
But Tails alone is not that bad at all.
You CAN turn him off you know....
I only don't like him when I'm playing Sonic 2 Special Stages. He always loses all the rings and I never get the Chaos Emerald.
Besides that, I feel "naked" unless I have Tails following me.
Haha. Hilarious, in two ways... (Probably unintended) :DQuote:

He always was annoying at times but you kinda just played and didn't think much of it after a while. Better AI would have been great, at least when he got lost he would usually return though.
Why not go into the options and choose just Sonic, oh wait a minute there wasn't that option available in Sonic 2 was there, or was there, or wasn't there, yeah as you can see, haven't played that game in a while. Oh yes I remembe, there is an option.
yep, sonic and tail, sonic only and tails only... but generally I'd end up ploughing on with the two of them anyway...
I figured someone would say that.Quote:

Could we have seen better AI if the developers had extra time to finish the game, or was this truly the best they could do?
I despise Tails in every instance. I always turn his sorry ass off and never play as him.
The only difference I find Tails makes is the Sonic 2 special stages harder as he runs into bombs and you need a higher total in order to pass. I usually turn him off when playing Sonic 2, however, always have him on during Sonic 3 & Knuckles as I find he livens up the game.
Could the AI really have been much better in the early 90's?
Tails AI is so atrocious. When you're playing it easy to ignore (sorta), but when you think about how many times he 'dies' in the course of the game it's sort of funny. I mean, he literally dies about every twenty seconds. I agree with Mr. Smith that he got better in Sonic 3.
Tails is a lot like Robin...
I like Tails, and I like to lure him into death
I like taunting him the Aquatic Ruin Zone by positioning Sonic just beneath the water - try and land now Tails!!
I don't pay much attention to Tails, I usually forget he is there. I haven't liked him in later games, when sega saw fit to give him an annoying wimpy voice.
Tails' AI in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is garbage, but I give them credit for trying. I always switch to using Tails anyway, because he's the greatest!!
I'm sure the "crappy" AI was intended for humours sake. I think Tails is awesome, just wish they'd make him stay on-screen when in 2 player mode.
Oh man, do I ever get that problem trying to play 2 player.:(Quote:

AFAIK, Tails was there to show off MDs blast proccessing... the system is so powerful that it has time to do less important things.
They saved the first idea for the wonderful masterpiece called Knuckles' Chaotix, to make sure that game would be the worst Sonic-related one ever released.Quote:

I often just turn him off. The whole tails thing would have worked a lot better had he actually acted like your sideman who saved you when you needed saving - IE sky level in sonic 2 and then in sonic 3 in marble garden. Its cool to have tails there in the beginning of sonic 3 too. But far too often, he just would go and die and would be annoying. at least he didnt get in yout way.
Wow, people are actually bitching about AI from 1992? How retarded can you get?
I can't recall a single game other than Sonic 2/3 that had simultaneous gameplay that wasn't human controlled. Of course it was poor AI when it rarely even exists on anything else. I seem to recall reading that Sonic 2's multiplayer was the first ever split-screen in a game, aswell. This was all revolutionary at the time and it's sad to see such informed people be so ignorant about it.
Also Tails only got rings you missed in the bonus stage, but turning him off allows you to get 10 less rings. Basically it was just a graphical/technological flair over the SNES and for little kids. I'd always play Sonic 2 with a friend and we were too stupid to really know or care about barely being able to do anything when you're Tails in the story mode.
Other than the 2nd boss in Sonic 2, I didn't have any issue with the AI. But that boss was very poorly made, anyway. It felt too easy to die by making the slightest mistake. And if you're not brain dead, you'd realise you can just stay under Robotnik at the lower left angle, then continously keep attacking him.
The only time I really remember it being actually useful beyond a cosmetic effect is Tails getting you out of those spider traps and allowing you to fly in Sonic 3. I think it's one of the defining features that kept Sonic unique and it's lame that they rarely do it anymore; it's like how the ditched calling stages "zones", amoung other things.
Chaos Engine has the second player computer controlled if a second human player isn't there. That came out after Sonic 2 though, having Tails running around after you was definitly something impressive at the time.Quote:

And that reminded me, Final Fight 3 has it as well. It causes terrible lag in an emulator though; don't know how it performs on actual hardware. That'd give Sonic an advantage as well if no one else can do it without it hindering gameplay. Well besides Chaos Engine, but that sucks as far as gameplay is concerned.
Yeah, but I would guess it would be harder to program an intelligent tales than the computer player in chaos engine. All they have to do is follow you and shoot bad guys and steal your money. Tales would be harder but they could have done a better job. I hate tails in the bonus levels, he is a fucking second slower than I am when I jump and always loses coins.
Played Sonic2 again last night to refresh my memory. In the actual levels Tails is rarely seen, he has either got himself killed or I'm speeding through the level too fast for him to keep up. He does come in handy for picking up the odd ring in boss fights when you get hit though. But in the bonus level half pipe he is a total and utter waste of space. That delay completely screws you over as he runs into the mines you breeze past. Yes it would look a bit daft if he ran exactly behind you at all times - so why can't he just fly above you or just not be there at all (but still be in the proper levels).
Tales... coins... are you sure you're a SEGA fan?
Also tards, Tails still only gets rings you missed unless for some reason you manage to get him in front of you. Either way, if you're getting the emeralds you should just play as Sonic(unless you have someone to help with it). Though even then I find it near impossible to do at the last few bonus stages.
People always love to bring up that incorrect point.
This is to be expected coming from a guy with Tails as his avatar.
I like Talis too, but I have to agree that he gats a pain in the @$$ in Sonic2 halfpipe, but other than that (one oner other thing in Sonic3) I like to have Tails around.
We're talking about AI. It could be a dried piece of elephant shite following you, but people would still be wrong about it.Quote:

I try to play that he'd get as little rings as possible, but he'll always grab a few, and he moves after a small delay which is in amy cases enough for him to run into a bomb and lose the rings he has and most likely ruin my chances of getting an emerald in later bonus stages.
Somewhat unrelated - but that makes me wonder if, had there been any more time to develop Sonic 2, Tails would have been improved? His AI in the special stages is exactly the same as in the prototype - do exactly what Sonic does, half(ish) a second later.Quote:

Tails makes a real difference especially in the seventh half pipe where there are too many bombs and you need more rings and it's just chaos. I'd say Tails doesn't become a major hinderance until the fifth special stage.
