New info and screens on the upcoming Sonic RPG here.
I don't know how I feel. I think the game looks absolutely beautiful and interesting, yet can't get over the fact that it's Sonic... in an RPG...
I don't know if I should laugh or cry.
I can already tell im going to hate it. Oh well another day another dollar or Amero if you will.
Only, it's being made by BioWare and they usually know what the hell they're doing.
It certainly doesn't look something good.
The characters look ugly, but the game seems interesting anyway.
I have a sneaking suspicion BioWare had an RPG engine lying around and just found some characters to plug into it.
It looks interesting, though. I won't write it off entirely until it's out and I've gotten a better look at it.
I usually don't really "do" RPG's unless it's real-time battles, but i'd still probably grab this if it's cheap enough one day. Not pre-ordering it or anything though.
I love how he says it like it's surprising. The chaos emeralds do that pretty regularly.Quote:
Mark Darrah Eggman was defeated some time ago and Sonic has gone out to explore the rest of his world. He has been gone for a while and then gets a call from Tails - Knuckles has been kidnapped! Not only that, the chaos emeralds are disappearing!
I was reserving judgment on this one. Bioware generally knows what it's about. Reading that gem, though... I dunno. But so help me, if they create a new character or spawn a new continuity...
Call me cynical, but putting Sonic in an RPG stinks of some kind of "action games aren't working, lets try this!"
I'm not going to like this game simply because it is an RPG.
It is set in the Sonic Adventure universe, that means all those goddamn useless friends/enemies are coming along too.
Pass and double pass.
The game screens look gorgeous and the idea of Sonic in an RPG is an interesting idea, but calling it "Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood" just sounds laughable! Especially "The Dark Brotherhood" part.
I honestly thought the name was a joke. Hopefully the game won't take itself too seriously. I'd love to see it go the Paper Mario route and attempt to parody itself.Quote:

This does not say much about the pace of the game. They've already stated they will not go the route of cookie cutter Final Fantasy battles which actively disengages the player.Quote:

I think Sonic takes itself too seriously for that. I'd love to see it too, but I doubt it.Quote:

I'd buy it. Dammit, why can't those kinds of games be done more often?
I have never, ever taken any joy from *any* type of turn based combat.Quote:

What was wrong with Sonic Wild Fire? The fact that the name "Wild Fire" was copyrighted, so Sega had to change it.Quote:

Hell, I gurantee Sega could create a Sonic game with using the old character designs and old gameplay and people would still find something to bash.
Didn't anyone look at this shot and smile?

Your post has been noted, but I still don't like RPG's.
Didn't like them before Sonic or Mario got shoehorned into one, don't like them now.
What is an RPG to you? Turn-based combat? Command-based battle systems?
The red wire that keeps the genre together seems to be stat-building. You can go pretty much wherever you want from there.
The primary offenders are the turn based combat, and command-based combat.
Leaving things up to commands feels very hands off, like I don't have control over what is going on. I don't like that loss of control..I'd rather win or lose with my own skill (or lack there of) instead of letting something behind the scenes do it for me.
Turn based is annoying is that I have to do my thing then wait for my enemy to move/fight before I can do anything again. Why don't I just take a nap while that goblin and his party of acid slime figure out where they wanna park it? :?
This is why I play action games instead of RPG's. Stat building is cool, but not if I have to deal with my feeling of not being in control and having battles drawn out to excessive lengths.
I used to have the same issues with rpg's. At a certain point though, I just began to consider turn-based and command-based rpg's to be relateable to chess. Yeah, I wasn't the knight taking out the bishop, but I orchestrated my knight taking out the bishop.
To be fair, rpg's have got to be the most "love it or hate it" genre out there.
My point was that this isn't the defining trait of the genre. There's plenty of ways of making the gameplay different as shown by Diablo, Terranigma, Metroidvania, Jade Empire, Oblivion, etc.
What keeps these games together is how you build and customize the skills of your character.
I struggle to understand how people can slate this game graphically! It looks alot better than some of the more recent Sonic outings....
I'm guessing alot of you are american ;) Any Uk Sonic the Comic readers would remember the Brotherhood of Metallix!

Yeah - that was one of my favourite stories in STC :) Always liked the Metal Sonic character.
I don't know what to think about the game though - on some level I can't get past "oh noes, sonic in an rpg??? omg!!!!1" * - but after Sonic at the Olympics, surely things can only get better.
(*used in an entirely ironic way)
I haven't really heard much in the way of gameplay details, but I remain very skeptical of this game. I can think of quite a few developers that I would think of as more appropriate to develop a Sonic RPG than BioWare. BioWare's games are always highly rated, but most of them are very slow-paced. They tend to be very statistical, D&D-style affairs, which is totally not the style of RPG I would envision for Sonic. I think Overworks could have made an awesome Sonic RPG; it's too bad they don't exist anymore.
And that screenshot posted above made me nauseated. Big the Cat returns? Yuck. (Although yes, it is beautifully drawn.) And whose bright idea was it to use a 3/4 overhead perspective?
GFX is nice, but its RPG... if its fully dynamic, without any menus and leveling crap I might like it.
I believe it does have leveling in it and a few other bits and bobs........Here in the uk we've had a full preview already. I wouldn't have any concerns over Bioware they did Starwars: knights of the old republic...
I'll give you a few more details:
- It is completely controlled with the stylus like Phantom Hourglass.
- There are no random battles, enemies appear on screen and to fight them you simply walk into them.
- The combat system offers something that's both complex enough to have strategic depth for RPG fans and yet simple enough for Sonic-loving causal gamers to get into.
- The battles are entirely turn based with you picking your options for each character.
- The attacks work a bit like Elite Beat Agents. Markers appear on screen and you must touch them with perfect timing in order to get the most out of your attack.
- Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Shadow, Rouge, Big The Cat and Dr Eggman will all feature in the game.
- Storyline: Knuckles and the seven chaos emeralds are abducted by a evil group known as the Marauders.
I read another preview a while ago I was trying to dig that out too but i've been unsuccessfull in finding it so far! It comments about Big the cat....
Battles totally turn based? Picking options?
This is a certified pass.
I'll be purchasing it :) There's nothing the matter with turn based combat...
It's not for everyone.
I don't mind turn-based combat, but it still sounds a bit weird.
And the fact that BioWare did KOTOR doesn't make me less skeptical of their ability to deliver a Sonic RPG that is both quality and fitting. KOTOR had the same characteristics I was talking about -- slow pace, too many statistics, etc.
Didn't I just hear that Bioware is working on KotoR 3?
If you are spreading a useless rumor, pain comes to Missouri.Quote:

It's a rumor - google it and you'll get tons of hits. Obsidian's working on three new games, one of which is 'the third game in a well-known series' or something cryptic like that. Kotaku was one of the first ones to suggest it; the other thing going around is that it's going to be an MMO.
That's almost too godly to hope for, though.
The official titles in development
Sonic RPG (post production. . .2008 release), Dragon Age, "untitled MMO," and a 2nd Untitled project are all aside from the pre-production of Mass Effect 2 & 3.
and aren't you old enough to know that Kotaku is full of shit?

I don't know if I should be angry or cry...Quote:
NGamer also reveals that the tone of the game is darker than previously shown, citing a moment where Amy Rose says to Rogue the Bat, "You're a tramp!"
Dark.
For 1964.
I love it.
This game sucks so fucking much I want to punch something when playing it.
It makes Lunar Dragon Song seem brilliant.
The hardly noticeable text change on both screens at the same time when a conversations happening, no progressive presentation of it, just text dumping is what drove me to madness with this dud.
Fuck you, Sega.
Fuck you.
RPG? pass
