I don't think I'll ever fall out of love with any particular era in gaming. I give credit where credit is due, and I tend to put myself in the mindset of that particular period in gaming whenever I play something older. Whether it's a 2600 game or a PS3 title. It's easier to do if you grew up during those times. I can see this being more difficult to empathize with for younger generations, but not impossible.
That being said, the 8- (specifically NES and SMS) and 16-bit generations were established already technologically for 2D gaming. It's still easy to find aesthetics in a lot of games from those eras. 3D gaming really started taking off with the 5th gen (32 bit era). Those were transitional times and the technology hadn't yet hit the sweet spot. The Dreamcast being the first to bring smooth, more palatable 3D graphics after that. So I can see why a lot of people prefer 16 bit 2D graphics to 32 bit 3D graphics.
32 bit 2D graphics and beyond still got better and better, though.
