I keep seeing that name not knowing what it is other than fortnight spelled wrong. I guess I'm on way to being old. I can't keep up with anything anymore. Soon I'll have a thermostat and TV I can't figure out like my grandparents.

Unreal, last week I'd forgotten the easiest combination lock and this morning I get it on first attempt. Strange how we forget things and the more we think about it the more it don't come back, but take a little break and it comes back to you without even thinking.

Seems nippy out therefore will need to make use of gym locker.

This morning I planned on hitting the local Best Buy (10 minutes away) to pick up Splatoon 2 since the expansion dropped. I had to go to another B.B. twenty minutes away because apparently last night a tornado rolled through the shopping center last night.

It also annoyed me that the reviews I read all seemed to ignore the fact that it was a blatant rip-off of Super Mario World. The write up in Nintendo Power said it was like Super Mario Bros 3.

That pissed me off.

At the time I played Super Mario Land 2, most of my GameBoy collection consisted of games that were either based on popular NES series, or were outright ports of NES games. Battletoads, Mega Man, Bionic Commando, Zelda, Castlevania... not all of these games were stellar, but they all felt justifiable. Battletoads was an almost entirely unique experience, Bionic Commando was arguably better than its NES counterpart, Operation C felt totally legit. But Super Mario Land 2 felt like “we threw this thing together, sorry you don’t have a Super Nintendo.”

I acknowledge that a lot of people love this game and I don’t begrudge them for it, but I just find it totally underwhelming, amateurish, and unfun.

This was a good post, even though never played these games, could relate. I too prefer the more NES vibe of the GameBoy, why it's so great. There's a lot of charm to the NES era that's nice to see extended onto the GB. Those simpler times vibe of the late 80s/early 90s is something I've been noticing lately. Also once things became too graphics focused, especially on the small screen and underpowered GB, gameplay and game design usually get sacrificed.

Thanks Vamp, I actually went with the Restoration Project as it included the Unofficial Patch and restores deleted/unused content, which I'm a stickler for. I've uploaded footage to my youtube if anyone wants to see how good the game looks.

@MrMatthews: I never played much SMW so I can't really comment on how the two compare, but I agree they look the same, in terms of style at least. I know the rabbit ear power up is the GB version of the Tanooki suit, but are there any similarities besides the ones you mentioned? Like, did they repeat the same level themes (not music, I'm talking like did SMW have an underwater/submarine-like level as well? etc)? My knowledge of SMW is the first two levels only.

As for the controls, I just got used to them. Never really noticed them, tbh. But then again, bitd, I had only the first GB Mario game to compare it to, so my experience with the series was, and still is, super limited. Wanna change that tho.

Yeah, I think every "new" element that Super Mario Land 2 offered over the first game was taken wholesale from Super Mario World, starting with the overworld. SML2 admittedly had more distinct themes in each section of it's overworld, (Halloween, Space, Tree, Giant House as opposed to "water," "ice," "forest"). Mario's sprite was obviously based on the SMW sprite. The spin jump came from Mario World. The use of music was taken from Mario World, in that a general motif was rearranged dozens of times throughout the game. I think the rabbit ears were a poor man's raccoon tail (or cape), in that you couldn't actually fly or even hover; you could only prolong your descent from a jump.

All the elements that I think were fumbled in Super Mario Land 2 were improved on with Super Mario Land 3/Wario Land 1.

And everything about the series was thrown out the window for every Wario Land game after that... for the better, probably.
