I was just gonna say that. The Zelda games may be Action-RPGs but that still counts. Dark Souls games are the farthest thing from Final Fantasy, but they are still considered RPGs.

Harvest Moon would really be stretching the definition of RPG. Its got RPG elements like talking to random people and picking up dates, but its a farming simulator at heart.

With the exception of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Zelda games are Action-Adventure games.

But yeah, they are more than acceptable in this here grouping. Just trying to get a feel for certain RPG elements on the N64. That's why Harvest Moon 64 is a good suggestion as well.

Breath of the Wild teeters on the edge being an RPG but otherwise, I agree only Zelda II is an actual RPG. Rest of the series is about as much an RPG as Mario Kart is a driving sim.

Yeah, the thing is that it's a slippery slope once one starts going that route. And it always ends with the obvious: "every game is a role playing game".:? But I do get that feeling I get as with many RPGs whenever I finish a Zelda game. "It's the journey" type of thing. Anyways. I dont think it takes one bit away from Zelda when you correctly categorize it under Action-Adventure. But I have seen the butthurtedness on YouTube and out in the wild one too many times already.

But it does appear the PS1 and Saturn make the N64 look like a joke in the RPG department.

Generally speaking, it kind of seems like if you were into anything other than 3D platformers, racing games, and wrestling games, the N64 wasn’t really a system for you. I never felt like I was missing out on anything by taking the PlayStation route*, and very few of the games I had really had anything comparable on the N64.

*Except StarFox 64. I devoted a lot of energy trying to find something exactly like it on the PS1. Never really found it.

I really liked it back then but then and I still enjoy it but compared to the other 2 I own. It feels like the weakest of the 3. By no means a bad system.

I class games like Landstalker and Alundra as action RPG's, and this is also how I class most Zelda games. Wonderboy in Monster World, on the Mega Drive, I would class as an action platformer with RPG elements.

No sorry, that's wrong. Ys is an action RPG. Darksiders II is an ARPG where Darksiders 1 is an AA. Zelda is an action adventure. It uses no RPG elements. RPGs are heavy in stats. Zelda series traditionally have no armor system. No stats on character or weapons. You keep the same items the entire game. Not how it works. A lot of people do not know how battle systems are graded and think it's binary. Between a menu or pressing a button to swing a sword. Dragon Age Origins is a turn-based RPG even tho it does not play like Dragon Quest. (side note the west created turn-based RPGs and Japan created Action RPGs) Your stats in the game determine when you swing your sword. Xenoblade is turn-based for one simple reason. If an action does not take place immediately after pressing the button then your stats are determining the frames in which you take your turn against the enemy.

Only Botw and Zelda II use any stats or systems. Botw is borderline but still an AA. Having just elements does not make something an RPG. Certain systems must be in place to count as an actual RPG. Otherwise, we have to count Call of Duty. I had to shut my channel off to the public thanks to Ninja Warriors music copyright strike otherwise I'd post the video form a game designer explaining in more detail. RPGs are a bit more finicky when classifying a genre as most people don't understand it. Mass Effect 1 is an RPG. Mass Effect 3 is not. Some games have elements or teeter but many things people think is an RPG just because of X or Y are wrong. Just about every Zelda game has nearly none of the elements to classify it as an RPG. Like I said before it makes as much sense as saying Mario Kart is a racing sim because it has vehicles and racing. Zelda uses the rule of 3 to kill a boss. RPG it has a specific amount of health with a number determined by levels and each stat is a level in itself and in some RPGs not everything levels up. You choose which stats to improve or in the case of some games, the more you use a spell or skill that skill or spell levels up and nothing else. Doing 3 puzzle elements does not kill the enemy/boss in an RPG typically. You don't have to manage your character or a party or inventory or space in the inventory in Zelda apart from Botw. Zelda, you solve a puzzle dungeon with a puzzle boss with a specific item with no stats and keep items the rest of the game and nearly no management of stats or inventory. It's just a fact Zelda is not an RPG with the exception of Zelda II. Items in Zelda are situational not something you need to replace/repair or upgrade with something better or weak to this element or strong against that element or status.

Well Landstalker and Alundra definitely are RPG's, and I would have thought that means that games like A Link To The Past are too. I'm not that familiar with Zelda but in games like Landstalker/Alundra your weapons are upgraded, your armour is upgraded, magic gets more powerful, they are very puzzle oriented games etc...

Landstalker is most definitely not an RPG. It is an action adventure game if there ever was any.

If we are going to go by armor or weapon upgrades, then let's start calling every God of War game RPGs (albeit the last one being very RPG element heavy). I am telling you, it's a slippery slope.

What about Beyond Oasis/Story of Thor, what does that fall under in you guys' eyes? Personally, it's an ARPG to me.

So far it is looking a lot like A Link to the Past. So Action-Adventure for me. Haven't finished it yet.
