BOTW is a masterpiece in a year full of them. Nier Automata, Yakuza 0, Xenoblade 2, Nex Machina and maybe more. BOTW is the best open world to me for exploring, so much to do and discover. Average combat tho. Nier Automata has an overworld but doesn't really function as an open world. Not much to do inside of it. Serves as dressing to get from dungeon/ story bit but interesting to look at. Combat is great tho as always with Platinum and has the greatest dodge in gaming history. Story-wise BOTW is nothing special where NA has one of the best ever. I also think Yakuza 0 has the best story in the series. Xenoblade 2 is just a really well-made RPG and hey some of these people helped craft the world of BOTW form their experience on XBX and it shows as they share similar design choices. Nex Machina IMO is the best twin-stick game possibly ever made. I put so much time into all of these games. Maybe 1000+ hours shared between them. I practically never call a game a masterpiece but holy hell 2017 was an amazing year. Way better than 2007 IMO

Well when bringing up cancerous series, Call of Duty totally fits the bill, but Burnout is just about racing cars and the series is mostly offline. Well I suppose you do get points by ramming other racers.

Theres so many games I hear constant praise about, yet I've never even seen a gameplay video of it. Snatcher is one of them.

Brother, to me, this is THE best game ever made. I went back to it also after two years ('first played it on the Wii U). It is the one game that best allows you to represent yourself in the character. No matter how you play it, you ARE Link, because your journey takes the structure of your own path beyond the limits of any game I have ever encountered. It is a story about good versus evil at its core. And it follows the patterns of the cosmos at every angle without fail. It is beautiful. It is engaging. It is paradise.

Not to mention BOTW truly lets the player solve just about any issue with their own imagination. From shooting an electric arrow in a pond to get all the fish. Wak with a torch or flame sword to keep warm in the cold. And in reverse an ice weapon in the heat. Use the magnet to push a sword against the wooden pole on the boat to make a motorboat. I remember a shrine was an electricity puzzle with some metal crates. I said screw that and used my weapons to link the current instead. A few shrine puzzles I went against the shrines intended design and created a new solution. The game just has that kind of freedom without scripted mechanics to do it. You can use a chicken as bait to get an enemy to attack you only for them to hit the chicken then a flurry of them come and kill the enemy. See that giant enemy sleeping...you could wake them up, fight and take the item. Or just sneak on their hand and wait for them to itch and they place you on their stomach and you take it and run away. There are just an endless amount of ways to be creative. I honestly feel you can get as much enjoyment out of that game as your imagination allows.

Not as a big a fan as he is but I do have the original games OST on CD and one of my fave osts ever.

BotW is indeed a good game, but the fact that dungeons were replaced with physics puzzles really wore out the game's welcome. I completed all of the shrines, and now I never want to play it again. It was the only reason I bought a Wii U. Yeah, emulation is good now, but it's not like the system is worth selling anymore.

I’ll defer on this one point: it seems like the WiiU is falling into that category of systems that have become / are becoming collectible because they never found their audience at the time. So if you were looking to sell yours, you probably wouldn’t have a hard time finding a buyer, even at close to eBay prices.

I'm currently playing the shit out of classic Doom and Doom II on my PS4. You just cannot beat the sheer raw adrenaline rush from what is one of the greatest and most influential games of all time. I'm playing through them both on ultra violence difficulty because I'm just so fucking hardcore. ;)

As long as The Wonderful 101 and Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Xenoblade X, Mario 3D world remain exclusive yeah I agree. It will have a small cult audience.

On paper the Wii U should have been a success but Nintendo (always knowing what's best) completely fumbled the ball with marketing. When Nintendo is on, it's on like no other but when it's off, it can screw up a one car funeral and that's exactly what happened with the successor to the Wii. The marketing push was never there and I was always waiting for it to finally happen but then the point of no return came and it was sayonara. Poor marketing aside, it started off well. Nintendo Land was a fantastic pack-in and some of the initial support (Arkham City A.E.) was solid. People started forgetting about the console because you never saw ads on television and the droughts between proper software were immense. Switch was the opposite and reverted back to the days of Wii in terms of advertising. I was floored, absolutely floored, seeing ads for Switch (prior to release).

MCU Spidey is no more. Disney and Sony had a spat and now we get to go back to Sony crappy Spider-Man films. Because ASM2 and Venom were such winners... :roll:

I actually really like the WiiU and I still have it hooked up and play it [relatively] often. It is a bit disappointing that it has next to NO exclusive titles, though. Most of the best games were ported to the Switch (which was the smart thing to do, honestly).

And good points, JCU. I’d also add that Nintendo didn’t do a great job informing consumers that it was an entirely new console, not just an add-on to the Wii. I remember hearing that a lot of people were confused about that...

Wii U didn't support any major 3rd party engines like Unreal or Cryengine. So little ram. Nintendo still using their own API and dev kits were expensive. The controller is bulky. The switch uses a better chipset. Also more powerful. Supports UE. Uses an Nvidia API that supports OpenGL and Vulkan. Marketed well and is fully portable. Wii U needed to happen so Switch could exist. I didn't mind using the Wii U when it was new but post Switch, it's hard to go back to.
