When I did the game store work thing, there were two systems everyone would trade in, hoping they would get jawusum amounts of store credit.
Sega Genesis & N64.
Both of these were traded in to the point where our stock was cheap, like $20 for a system+all cords+a controller. Whereas I have a fondness for the Genesis, I didn't for the N64.
Plus I hate the N64 controller, the graphics, and I feel the N64 was not a worthy follow-up to the SNES.

but where's the N64? sure it has Mario 64 but the rest are just more low res 3D platformers.
And don't get me wrong, I'm sure that game with the bear and the bird is great, and same with that cursing squirrel game.
but again.. not innovating and different like Metroid was to Chrono Trigger.
Though I'll always have a fondness in my heart for Pilot Wings 64.
I don't like Mario 64, it just doesn't *feel* like a Mario game. I know 3D was new, and they had to somehow translate Mario into 3D, but I don't think it works for Mario.
I also don't like the game as it is the beginning of Nintendo squeezing Mario's ass into whatever other type of game they see fit. "Mario Kart" was fun, in a one-off kinda way, but now he's a soccer player, baseball player, etc.

Wow, what's with all the N64 hate? The system was fantastic if you were a kid (specifically the Pokemon generation, like I am), and it has its gleaming gems.

I don't see how the graphics were any worse than the other systems at the time. And the controller, while weird, was pretty comfortable. Only issue I have with it are the flimsy sticks that are all worn out now.
It was the beginning of the 3D age, and Nintendo lost a bit of its 3rd party support, so yeah, things weren't looking too great for it.Quote:

True. Mario 64 is nothing like 2D Mario. That's not to say it was bad. I don't think it's bad by any stretch of the word. But I like exploration/puzzle-based 3D platformers (so do a good number of people). Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie are some favorites on the system that do the same thing as Mario 64 (but BETTER). Donkey Kong 64 too, but holy shit, that pushes the boundaries of how many collectables need to be put in a 3D platformer.Quote:

I've heard A Link to the Past is better (I've also heard the same for Link's Awakening). I have ALttP, but haven't found the time to play it yet. Of course, I've heard that it's better only from SNES fanboys and people who seem to automatically favor 2D anything over 3D anything, so I'm still skeptical. I've played all the Zeldas pre-Twilight Princess and I still feel Ocarina of Time is a little overrated.
BTW, I've never owned a SNES; rented one back in the day, so no, I ain't no fanboy.
Ocarina of Time feels robotic and stiff - unlike the fluidness of Wind Waker*s combat.
Here's what I 'll say about A Link to the Past. When I had to sell off most of my games, I sold off almost all my SNES games. Link to the past was one of the few I kept.

Anyway, N64 doesn't deserve blind hate. Starfox 64 (or Lylat Wars as they inflicted on Europe) is great - it's one of the best games, ever. So... nerr.
More reasons not to hate the N64: Mario 64 (despite the camera), Mario Kart 64 (even though the snes version is far superior), Smash Bros, Goldeneye (even though the single player mode is somewhat boring), Mischief Makers, Sin & Punishment, Diddy Kong Racing (up until that goddamned giant pig boss level), F-Zero X... Conker's BFD is funny in places, and South Park's ok too (cow gun!). Meh, I've even had fun playing the minigames on Pokémon Stadium with friends - not so much the main game though. :p
