X eye does look a lot cooler.
Just got an X'Eye recently and I'm in love with it. I do love the way the CDX looks but I love the X'Eye, it looks like it was carved out of one of the walls of the Millennium Falcon or maybe the rebel base on Hoth or something out of Owen and Aunt Beru's kitchen in Tattoine. Definitely looks like something out of Star Wars to me.
^^
Looks a little less appealing with the 32X attached, though. :p

The CDX is just so damn sexy. The X'eye is interesting... but it doesn't have the same appeal to me.
I like my X'Eye and find it more practical than a CDX due to the square cartridge slot, but I do think it's pretty ugly. The CDX looks amazing, and I'd say it's among the best looking consoles around. I hate that the X'Eye design was changed from the awesome looking Wondermega to what we received. Reminds me of how hideous the original SNES is compared to the Super Famicom. Why would anyone think that's a good idea?
I like the way an X'EYE sounds on my tv a lot more than a CDX. The CDXs I've checked sounded muffled on the set.
I do like the look of a CDX, plus all that power in a compact system.
The X'Eyes are expressive and the Wondermega is stupid dumb expensive.
Do not get a cdx if you want to play on rgb monitor with scart cable, the image is TERRIBLE, colors arent correct and lots of noise in the signal. My Cdx was my go to system until i got a sony pvm, now its the xeye, best overall genesis and cd combo imo.
Yeah, the CDX has weak video output. It's even noticeable in composite, at least sometimes. I remember playing The Terminator back to back on my CDX and X'Eye (to test its supposed incompatibility), and the X'Eye had significantly better video quality, especially noticeable in the backgrounds.
I don't remember trying it, but I'm sure the issue is alleviated with a 32x connected. You can also mod the CDX for better video. I don't think it has any audio deficiencies, though. It doesn't have the best revision of the Genesis FM chip, but otherwise the audio output is perfectly solid IMO.
...And for what it's worth, The Terminator plays fine on my CDX (and X'Eye). But, strangely enough, it locks up on my standard model 2 Sega CD. The issue is pretty much exactly how Silence The Fallen described it on his CDX -- it seems fine at first then locks up at some inconsistent point in the first stage. I made a thread about it years ago, and not much happened in that thread except one other person reporting that it worked fine on his CDX too, and one or two saying they had no problem with it on their model 2s. Two people said Joe Montana didn't work on a model 2 (not sure about CDX).
And for added confusion, my CDX does not play Jurassic Park properly. The issue is just as Silence described, even though my CDX doesn't have a problem with The Terminator. Go figure.
?? My CDX looks *perfect* in RGB but I'm not using SCART. Perhaps it needs the 220uf caps on the output for SCART? Meh, SCART bugs me. All my systems are modded for VGA-style RGB with TTL sync.
Anyway, CDX is better if modded and for size. otherwise go for an X'eye.
EDIT: The RGB is perfect with the voltage regulator mod for the chroma encoder. Video is kinda noisy without this mod.
I have yet to get a CDX and probably never will but I love my X'Eye. When my Sega CD M1 broke down and I wasn't sure I could fix it (which I did later), I decided to get a X'Eye since they seem of better quality in AV output and reliability. While I did spend more money then I wanted since finding one with right power adapter is tough, I was happy to own it. Despite not designed for SMS and 32x support, its my favorite Genesis system next to my GEN/CD/32x battleship. I love the X'Eye's nice power and reset buttons, actual A/V outputs, the square cartridge slot that allows Japanese games, and overall great quality. Even the three button controller is very good and like to use it a lot. One of these days I am going to test out its karaoke and see how good it is.
Can someone point my to the link about modifying the x'eye for sms compatibility? I would like the use the sms function with my megaeverdrive X7
Today it's the Sega CDx for me but I did start with first Sega CD than the got my hands on a 32X that was a beast of system.:love:
