EGM's last big feature on the Sega Genesis. <scan>

After having grandiose plans to scan any Genesis-related stuff from the handful of mags I still have remaining, procrastination and time limits once again reared their ugly heads, so I chose to only scan what probably was Electronic Gaming Monthly's last big feature on the Sega Genesis. Afterwards, they only mentioned it in blurbs and in historical content, all while the SNES got a large 10th anniversary piece in their September 2001 issue, solidifying that EGM always preferred the SNES to the Genesis, even while the Genny was at its market peak in 1991-1993. From their 1999 Video Game Buyer's Guide (which also listed the scores and small blurb to every Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, 32X & Saturn game they ever reviewed.......hell for every game they reviewed prior to November 1998):

Interesting. I would be curious to see how article similar to this written now would sound compared to this one. After all the Death of the Genesis was fairly fresh in everyones mind at the time.

You should've seen how they were just GUSHING over the SNES just two pages before this similar Genesis piece, even going as far as saying that many of the SNES's gems are far better than what was out for the N64 at the time, and wishing how the system would never die.

I quit caring what they said about anything when they went SF2 crazy.

You know it is bad when people are sending in letters telling them to tone it down.

I partly blame the death of 2d on the popularity of the fighter.

Which issue was that? What is on the cover? I'd like to read the rest and I'm sure I have that issue.

The 1999 Video Game Buyer's Guide. A.K.A EGM's last hurrah to the 16-Bit consoles, the Sega Saturn, and to a lesser extent every system ever covered by EGM up to that point.

My copy is literally falling apart, and I lost the cover and the first few pages to it ages ago. I wish I could score a better copy along with some earlier Buyer's Guides.

Man, the Majesco six-button Genesis controller had some crappy looking buttons.

I own six of the games on that list (I'm missing NHL '94, Shining Force II, Ghouls 'N' Ghosts, and Strider).

Thanks to EGM, I ended up buying FOUR copies of "Ghouls 'N Ghosts" within a three-year period (1996-1999); the 2nd one didn't even work and the last (boxed, complete) one I bought when I didn't even own a Genesis at the time! I was such a tool that I took their Genesis game recommendations and recollections as gospel.........luckily they were actually good games. I also got "Strider" after they included it in their "Top 100 Games of All Time" list (#42) in their 100th issue.

The Saturn is a better machine? They must be talking strictly tech specs, as I recall EGM being fairly anti-Saturn.

They had slightly more softer words for the Saturn in the next two pages. It still didn't stop them from burying it though, highlighting the Saturn's U.S sales of 1.3 Million compared to the PS1's estimated sales of 18 million.

i bought that controller the last week i didnt realise it was made by majesco,on the front is says sega so im confused,what does the official 6 button controller look like?

its a dam good pad actualy.

There were two different type of 6-Button pads packed in with the Genesis 3: a Sega-made 6-Button pad that strongly resembled the shape of the original 3-Button control pad, and a third-party 6-Button Pad re-branded as a Sega pad as shown in the scan above. The latter pads were also sold individually.

I remember EGM not being so kind to Herzog Zwei when they first reviewed it. Why the love in this buyers guide?

What's so stupid is the way gaming media looks at the DC and Genesis as failures simply because they got discontinued. Get a clue, people - all consoles get discontinued sometime! With the SNES and NES it's all "oh, it'll live in our hearts forever and we'll never stop getting off on its plastic frame". With the Gen and DC it's more like "oh, they were awesome systems but OMIGOSH THEY GOT DISCONTINUED SO THEY MUST HAVE SUCKED!".

Gah.
