EGM's last big feature on the Sega Genesis. <scan>

I've got that issue, as well as the EGM & GamePro issues covering the DC launch title reviews, unveiling of the PS2, its Japanese launch, its U.S launch and launch title reviews, the unveiling of the GameCube and Game Boy Advance, the unveiling of the original XBOX and.........get the picture?

I saved all of my "historic" EGM & GamePro issues (including the 10th Anniversary, 150th and 15th anniversary issues) and threw away all the rest due to lack of space. I wish I could get my hands on EGM & GamePro's 100th issues again.

Gah is right. Also I kinda cringed when the author said that "Ironically, the Genesis is dead." Kind of a stupid thing to say as the article was published a full 10 years after the consoles initial release. Like GK said, all consoles get the axe eventually, and very rarely do consoles get the kind of mileage that the Genesis got.

Doesn't really matter to me as far as im concerned the system is still going with Beggar Prince recently coming out and with Pier Solar coming out hopefully in October still.

It has alot to do with when it was published. People were tired of hearing about the Genesis and Snes.

I own the 1999, 2000 (with its awesome, detailed timeline of video gaming from the 1960's up until late 1999), 2001, 2002 and 2003 Video Game Buyer's Guides. I assume that after the 2003 one (which wasn't as good as previous ones) the quality of the Buyers' Guides dipped. That's mostly in part due to the lack of "excitement" in the last two console generations. No premature console deaths or upsets. When the GC & XBOX died, they just faded away without notice. I bet EGM didn't even give them a send-off like they did with most departing consoles prior to the PS1, Dreamcast & N64 (which were all last covered in the 2002 Buyers' Guide, released in late 2001).

Any of you guys own any EGM Buyers' Guides, new or old?

I agree wholeheartedly. Even when I was out of the gaming scene, I would buy the Video Game Buyer's Guide every year just read the year's review. I still have the issues from 2000, 03, and 04. I used to have the one from 99 with the retro reviews but I lost it. They are kind of hard to find and aren't available as back issues on the Ziff Davis Publishing site. They are tough to find on ebay too.

Everybody says "Super Nintendo was still around well into the 32-bit era." If you think Snes was still around "well into" the 32-bit generation, so was Sega Genesis. First of all, DKC1 and DKC2 were not made in during the 32-bit generation, they were made 1994 and 1995, which were the transitional years. By late 1996 Super Nintendo manufacturing factories stated closing down, and the system was being sold in less and less stores throughout 1997. For anyone who can't remember clearly, the Sega Genesis was also being sold in most stores until late 1996, and then started fading away throughout 1997 just like the Super Nintendo did. The last Sega Genesis was sold in the December of 1997, while the last Super Nintendo was sold in the February of 1998, a TWO MONTH DIFFERENCE.

And the Genesis started out earlier as well.

And through Tectoy proper licensed games were released beyond that (Show do Milhão was released in 2001), Megadrive had a much longer lifespan than Snes.

Sounds accurate to me.

I think Nintendo gets better press about their past systems because they're still in the hardware business--and lets face it, their they only GAMING company left making consoles--and Sega bowed out of the hardware business.

Its unfair because even though the SNES had better hardware, a lot of its features were overused and/or used in horrible ways. If I had a dollar for every unnecessary sprite scaling and badly done Mode 7 level I'd be a very rich man.

Nintendo gets more attention because it has better representation on the internet a.k.a Nintendo Fans.

...you wouldn't even have enough money for Starbuck's cheapest, being that the SNES couldn't scale sprites without the FX chip.

I stand corrected then. Still, that chip must have been used a lot. Either that or what I'm referring to isn't sprite scaling.

I thought the FX chip created polygons, and the SNES could scale and rotate sprites on its own... I know there is scaling in Super Mario Kart, and that definately didn't have an FX chip.

It had a DSP-chip instead.
