NES alternate controllers

That's it. I definitely can't cope with these horrible original NES controllers anymore.
Recently I've come to the conclusion that the NES D-pad is definitely the worst ever developed in the history of video-games!

Can anyone here who owns a Nintendo NES recommend me some good alternate controllers?

Get the Model 2 Controller...the dogbone controller

If that "Super 8 pad" is like the one that came with my Neo Fami (because it looks just like it) avoid it because it is a total piece of shit.

I've heard that the NES Max was crap too.

I never had a problem with the regular controllers, other than the square edges. If you must use something else I'd either try the dogbone controllers or get this:

When it comes to Nintendo controllers you really don't have much choice, there were a lot of terrible controllers made for the system.

Don't bother getting the NES Advantage, it has pretty bad response and is useless unless you are playing Pac Man or Gauntlet. Also it takes both controller ports so no 2 player games with it.

Even heard of the NES speedboard? it's much better than the Advantage but uses a regular NES controller.

I was just curious about this speedboard controller, Nunzio. I couldn't actually understand how it works, it seems to be just a regular controller that fits onto a platform....

Frankly, I like the dogbone controllers the best, but the advantage is cool too on some games. I say go with the dogbone.

got them with pirate MD2 like FC clone named "Star Drive". That MD2 on the right is also FC clone. Great controller.

I have heard they are pretty good, but I don't have them myself.

Avoid any other wireless controllers....especially those Acclaim ones.

The NES Speedboard is actually just the plastic thing. You put your own controller in it and all it does is hold it. It's beauty lies in it's simplicity though. It is kind of a poor kid's NES Advantage. You play with your index fingers just like the Advantage only it takes one controller port and is much more responsive.

I can personally vouch for it making games easier to play. Button mashers like Track and Field 2 and Tecmo World Wrestling are way easier and overall it is better for most games. Unlike the Advantage as well you can pop the controller out of the Speedboard for certain parts of games to make it easier too. So you can wrestle holding the controller normally and then put it into the Speedboard for the training segments. It reeeeaaaally helps. That's why I prefer it over the Advantage.

But the Speedboard is kind of a collector's item now, not so easy to find. Nintendo only made one run because, like I said it makes the NES Advantage redundant and they wanted to sell them instead. If you do find one for a good price it is totally worth it!

The Advantage is great. Yes it has two plugs, you can switch between ports, but only one is needed to play a game so can play with two advantages.

Yeah sorta odd. I think the two plugs things was a bit of a gimmick. Lots of games back then were not simultaneous two player games. With that switch you could switch between player 1 and 2 for games like Mario

dpad on the nes is fine for me O_o i love the little dinky controller.

Stay far away from the NES Max, whatever you do. That is all the advice I have for you.

I had the max and the advantage back in the day. The advantage was nice for slower games, but I'd often use the max. Lots of people don't like the max because they don't know how to use it ;)

In recent years I also found that I didn't like the stock NES pads so much anymore. Even though it looked like it wouldn't work very well, I found the dogbone pad to be by far the best NES controller I've ever used.

before you settle for the dogbone, you should try the.... Joycard Sansui SSS by Hudson Soft.!!!! It is by far the most advanced nes controller out there. It has turbo and built-in headphone port!

Yeah, but doesn't it have square buttons like the first run of Famis? I'd think that is even less comfortable.

The only thing I don't like with the dogbone is the way the A+B buttons are at an angle. I'm so used to the them being straight across like on the older controller.

I'd recommend one of the third party arcade joysticks. The advantage was a POS but I played around with a Quickshot arcade stick and it seemed to have a good feeling joystick (not as good as my genesis 6-button arcade stick, but not bad). http://cgi.ebay.com/Quickshot-2-play...QQcmdZViewItem

Stay FAR away from the NES MAX as its the worst controller ever made in every way possible. The Super 8 (or whatever its called this week) that comes with the Yobo FC Game Console is a great controller IMO and feels almost like an original genesis controller just alot smaller (nearly identical d-pad and button feel). The only problem is it won't fit in a real NES, so you would have to play your games on the Yobo FC, but they're only like $20 online so if you can live with a few games having slightly different sound and incompatibility with Castlevania III and like 10 crappy games then its definitely worth it to ditch the POS NES d-pad and thumb gouging buttons.

side note: if you buy an old used controller and it isn't responsive, its probably because its dirty and needs to be taken apart and cleaned. I've had a couple used controllers with very unresponsive buttons that worked like new after cleaning the main circuit board and the silicon buttons with the conductive material.

Well, all I can say is that I'm delighted with the dogbone controller. Incredibly better than the stock one, smooth to the fingers....

There was nothing wrong with the MAX pad, it was just designed with certain games in mind, It's pretty much essential hardware for RC Pro-AM and Galaxy 5000 as far as I'm concerned.

It was a nice innovative piece of kit for it's time, unfortunately as with the Advantage it's plagued with the oppinions of people that either never played the righ games with it or picked up one after 15 years of use and branded it 'unresponsive'
