Genesis controller versions.

Well I was doing some work on this Genesis controller today when I happened to notice something mildly interesting...

It seems that not only do original model 1 Genesis consoles have two shades of grey on their logo, but some old 3-button controllers do as well. I also noticed (some time ago) that older controllers have red ink applied to directional arrows and the indented 'A', 'B', and 'C' on the trigger buttons. Newer ones move "trigger" from above the buttons to below as well.

So what I'm getting to here is- is there any preferred controller version like the Genesis console, or are they all more or less the same? (I know I prefer newer ones because I wore my old ones down to the marrow)

I like the red better but only becuase it seems to be much less common.

Also, use the "report this post" button when you see stuff like this, the triangle with the exclamation mark in it which is underneath where the avatar would go (either this http://www.sega-16.com/forum/plasma/buttons/report.gif or http://www.sega-16.com/forum/images/buttons/report.gif, depending on what forum skin you use).

Then there are all the really weird Sega 6 button variations, the JVC Xeye controllers et al.

oh yeah... didn't see that... I was actually looking for something that said "report spam" or something, but "contact us" was the closest I found.

Anyway... controller versions. Anyone find any certain type that works best? I have to say it's a toss up for me. One common thing however is that the "start" button always seems to die first. One one of my controllers (an old one with two-shade grey), I practically have to use a vice.


On the other hand, this particular controller has been in heavy use since we got our Genesis in '89. So much so that the "pivot point" underneath the center of the d-pad has literally worn a hole into the circuit board underneath. The controller itself has seen so much use that the body has lost all of it's abrasiveness and become shiny. It even has a lovely little chip out of the side of it from when I threw it at our television after losing Mortal Kombat 16 times in a row against my dad (I was about 6 at the time.) At this point, the only reason I try to keep it alive is for nostalgia.

I haven't seen the early red-lettered 3-button pads since the early '90s, and found it odd when I got my first Genny in 1995 that the 3-button that came with it, and all other 3-buttons I eventually stumbled upon no longer had red letters. I can assume that only the pre-Sonic Gennys (all of which were packed in with "Altered Beast" unless a "Core System" existed back then) came with the red-lettered pads.

Now that I remember, when I first got "Golden Axe' and "Gargoyles" back in '96, I was given a red-lettered 3-button pad along with it, as well as an RF Switch.........for a Sega Saturn I never owned. Anyways, I don't recall if it didn't work properly or if I preferred a 6-button pad, but I threw it away and since then I haven't seen one again. Not much of a loss to be honest.......once I went 6-button, be it first-party (both the original and 3-Button pad-esque Genny 3 one) or some of the many third-party ones I've owned like Interact's or this cool programmable pad with an on-screen LED of all six-buttons, lighting up and whatnot........

I remember getting an extra Genesis controller that had red lettering on the buttons, I also remember the controller had "smooth" plastic for buttons as opposed to the "rough" plastic of the white lettering controller I had (that came with the system.

I also remember using the "red letter" controller more as the cord on it was longer.

I like the version 2 that came with the Genesis 3.

Back in the day, I had the fat 3-button dealies with the white start button - but I have no respect for them anymore, because whenever I've got one second hand, they have, without fail, been dead or dying.

Nowadays, only 6-button pads will do. My favourite is the official kind with the turbo switch and the blue start button.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never used one of those that wasn't broken in some way. Usually a very frayed wire.

Really? Maybe I'm lucky with 6btn pads then - I must have 6 or 7 by now, and only one is broken - the MODE button's all stoved in, and Y / Z don't work. I'd been using it for a couple of weeks, and didn't even notice 'til I plugged it in for a quick game of SFII - evidently I don't play enough 6 button games!

I made a list of all my different controller versions once, while attempting to gain control over my giant tangle of leads - but that was a long time ago now. Perhaps it still exists - somewhere..

The only 3-button controller I use is my trusty asciiPad SG. Best controller ever.

Too bad the 6-button version sucks ass.
