The ice sheets have covered England already?
And here I've been enjoying ~70F temps (when not at work) the last few days.
8,000th post! I need to get out more.
4453
Yep, it was really cold for most of yesterday. Probably to spite the many people who are already acting like it's Xmas.
I'd happily make it so anyone seen brandishing Xmas paraphernalia before Dec 1st is destroyed on sight. :)
However, I don't think that policy would be very popular, so it will probably never happen. :(
4454
I've decided that it is best to accept X-mas stuff post Halloween (which makes for extra x-mas shopping time).
But nobody better play fucking x-mas music till after Thanksgiving.
4455
Yeah it is so strange, the local grocery stores just started a few years ago to put up Xmas stuff immediately after Halloween, i.e. the next morning. They had signs up about it when they began the merchandise strategy, explaining it as a way of providing greater convenience, etc. Essentially they decided that they could probably sell more Xmas stuff, by starting to sell it as early as possible.
Man, no room for enjoying the Halloween afterglow! Better just avoid the stores right after Halloween, and continue the Halloween vibe. These holidays just don't go together at all!
Of course Halloween is often the holiday to be minimized / diminished, because people feel uncomfortable if they take it too seriously... So why not Xmas stuff the next morning!!!
4456
It's what we learned watching Nightmare Before Christmas.
4457
I never got into that movie, bored the hell out of me.
I don't think I'm goth enough to enjoy it.
4458
I enjoyed that movie cuddling with the cute girlfriend at the time, who loved the movie. (She was not goth by the way, just a cute blonde. But she had been goth in high school, before her wholesome appearance as I met her. How cute... and hot!)
@Rusty yeah you must not be goth enough!!! Wear some black for a few days and you might enjoy the movie more. Even better, have a random fling with a goth chick who loves to wear black, and cuddle and watch this movie. Yeah, then it would be awesome.
4459
A random fling with a hot goth chick would indeed be jawusum (but would get me shot by my gf). I doubt banging a goth chick would make me any more likely to enjoy anything by Tim Burton.
I don't like his goofy art style used in his movies, most notably "Beetlejuice", "Edward Scissorhands" and his Batman movies. "Batman Returns" is probably the biggest offender because its a good movie that is (IMO) brought down by Burton's silly art style and that stupidly goofy Penguin.
4460
Yeah you make some good points about his work. I really haven't seen any of it since I was a kid, but I didn't really like it too much. I remember that the Penguin is an absolutely awful, ridiculous character, and I remember not liking any of the characters very much.
Beetlejuice was pretty sweet as a kid, but yeah, the movie still has that same silly approach as ever. Maybe it works for Beetlejuice better than his other stupid movies, but I dunno. Haven't seen it since I was real young. I liked it but I also didn't quite "get" some parts of the movie, and the characters.
I watched the Beetlejuice cartoon too, and that was far worse than the film. The characters (of Lydia, Beetlejuice, the French skeleton, etc.) -- they were all silly and gross. I never really understood why Beetlejuice was such a "gross" character, which they emphasized to be comedic...like why did his teeth have to be all rotten, and why did he have to be dirty in general, etc. I never really understood the characters, or that whole cartoon. Why was Lydia a weird pale skinny girl, who hung out with Beetlejuice and the other stupid characters. I think I watched it and waited for it to get good, and it never did. Actually I don't think I enjoyed any of the lame artwork for that cartoon either. Man, wasted hours as a child!!!
And I don't want anyone to get shot by his gentle, sweet gf!!!
4461
Beetlejuice = meh. It's ok, but I tend to find it a bit too silly to bother with nowadays. The cartoon is, and always was, a pile of crap.
Nightmare Before Christmas is still good though. It makes me a bit sad that you don't like it, Rusty - but I expect the "goth" part of me that enjoys it is always glum anyway. Sigh...
4462
smokeout, awh-yeah
4463
The scene where he takes control of the Batmobile and is driving it around in that kiddie car thing is so over the top stupid it is embarrassing.
And no, I am not making this assessment based upon the newer "serious" Batman movies.
I mean, the guy rides on a giant rubber duck. He has helper penguins? Hands like flippers? Gimme a goddamn break.
I think his style works for "Beetlejuice" but that is about it. I don't really wanna watch the movie again after I decided that I absolutly hate Time Burton's art style. I don't wanna ruin a movie I know I liked.Quote:

I expect that your government required monocle, tophat, and french knickers were all purchased at Hot Topic then?
4463
I got Zaku, I am happy :D

4462
In all fairness, I like the cartoon, probably because I saw it before the movie. I absolutely love Nightmare Before Christmas, and I secretly admit that I do have a thing for Goth culture...black looks damn good, and Tim Burton is one of my favourite directors...
Man, I gotta cut down on the ellipses, I sound like a Final Fantasy character.
Also, I got a haircut, and I now sport a mullet. Apparently, according to my friend, who's a huge Metal Gear fan, I look like Solid Snake.
Though he did admit he always hated Snake's mullet.:|
I also got minor surgery, and the mullet's quite good at covering the stitches.
4463
Well! I must say it's rather ungentlemanly of you to suggest I should divulge such information, Mr Venture. ;)
(For the record though, I've never been a goth. Just a bit of a weirdo.)
No Hot Topics here anyway. Plenty of "indie" goth clothing / comic shops, but the legions of ridiculous minigoths who surround them (and let's be honest, most of the content) make them better avoided.
4470
I apologize Smii, I will never ask where you purchase your monocles ever again.

BBC should do a special on things that are too British.
4475
Like tea and crumpets, Big Ben, and double decker buses.
4476
And Hugh Grant.
4477
The BBC wouldn't be allowed to imply anything was too British. People might start to agree, imply that the BBC incites nationalism and supports the BNP, and eventually it would surely be stripped of its first B.
Being known simply as "BC" would imply outdatedness. And if it's outdated, why should television license payers keep funding it? Of course, they would stop.
If the channel no longer had enough funding to continue, then eventually people would begin to run screaming into the streets for lack of satirical news quizzes (and other vital panel shows), Eastenders, David Attenborough's "Life With Animals And That", and the great Queen's bi-monthly speeches on matters of our day!
Our great nation would surely crumble within a matter of days :(
Hugh Grant, however, should be stuck to the underside of a bus, and driven into a ravine.
4478
Don't care for Hugh Grant and his bumbling?
4479
I most assuredly do not. Bumbling was once a respectable profession, but that terrible little wonky faced man had to go and cheapen it. :P
